Anyone here know Dan Dare and his legendary archvillain, the Mekon? What about a movie?

Dare was launched in the 50s and was around in comics in the 70s and 80s (where i read his exploits). Virgin Comics revived the character last year in a new comic - Virgin also bought film/TV/video rights...

There's also an exhibition on now at London's Science Museum showing how Dare (a sort of UK Buck Rogers) reflected Britain's technological advancement in the years after the war. I visited it last weekend.

I wrote about Dan Dare and the exhibition in my blog, and talked about whether we would ever see a movie. Seeing Mekon on the big screen would be awesome!

Anyone else here agree? Or is Dan Dare unknown outside the UK?

My Dan Dare blog is here: http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2008/06/how-dan-dare-piloted-britain-i.html

Until about a decade ago and before he became the face of another comic strip character, I really thought Michael Fassbender would have made an excellent Dan Dare but I suppose he'd be a good choice for a middle-aged Dan if they wanted to go in that direction. But seeing as most of Dan's adventures in the Eagle comic occurred when he was aged between 29 to 35 then my choice of actor would go to either Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, X-Men) or Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, Woman in Black 2).

Strangely enough, Nicholas seems to almost naturally have those unusual Dare-like eybrows.

Would love a Dan Dare film, massive fan. As first post said though, not entirely sure how well known or popular he is as a character, outside of the UK, though. Could be a very hard sell.

I'd be surprised if we ever actually got a Dan Dare film but I'd certainly go see it.

I didn’t like the Sam Worthington suggestion that was floating around a few years ago. He was only put forward from whatever studio that was interested in making it because he was riding the wave of Avatar. I hate flavour of the month castings, they can turn out to be totally miscast.

Even if we did get a movie and it was very good the last thing I'd want to see is another Dredd situation.
