How Do People Who Have Been Deaf From Birth Think?

I haven't really wondered this, to be honest. I've been more amazed at the number of deaf people who can learn to speak, or- like in Beethoven's case- become so skilled with music. Last Saturday at the theme park I work at was Deaf Awareness day, and I was shocked to see how many people came to the musical show that I do, even when the interpreters had already left. I imagine it was more for the dancing (I highly doubt they can feel the vibrations from our crappy drums, aside from the fact that we're on a raised platform and they're on concrete), especially since one of the deaf girls approached one of our dancers and wanted to learn some of our dance moves. It sucked, because I wound up being interpreter for the day, and all off of only two semesters of Sign Language.

That said, I've studied Sign Language for about a year now, and I've been trying to find deaf communities to learn more/better my sign language, possibly even to become an interpreter, should my stunt work not work out in the future. It's a fascinating language to learn, in my opinion. A hell of a lot more fun than my French and Spanish classes I took too.

hey Morg, would you ever go get that surgery that could make you hear again? A friend of mine did it.

I'm deaf and have a voice in my head. A lot of deaf kids/babies learn to 'talk' by sign language so asking for a sandwich means we sign it just not say it and that saying deaf people can't hear sounds is flat wrong, we feel vibrations pretty good. Hell I always stay right next to the speakers in a concert so I can feel the music being played

Wow! This is really a concept that's never occurred to me. It makes perfect sense though. Just look at how many animals communicate under water through vibrations.

huh? this was one of the first questions I asked here when I first joined, I remember cause I think Morg got offended by it.

How ****ed up would it be to try to describe color to a blind guy?

Don't many deaf people learn to read lips?

How do you describe a fart to someone with anosmia?

I don't know about anyone else... but it's an innate quality for me. I just picked it up from an early age and I can automatically read lips ever since.

Friends think it's a nice parlour trick. I'm flattered to be the centre of attention.

As for blind people - there ARE those who are colour blind, so it's a little similar, it makes you think in these cases that colour is subjective.

I've always wondered about that. It's pretty fascinating.

I also find it cool that you can feel the music when you stand beside a speaker. I'm sure you can get a good feel of the song that way.

I have a different experience of when it comes to music. I don't have to stand beside a speaker at all, I can just feel the vibrations from the floor, the walls, wherever.

I can hear the 'mood', tempo, rhythm, whether it's a male or female voice, and sometimes what kind of music ie opera or rock... But I wouldn't know what song nor the singer, or the more subtle pitch and notes.

There are different kinds of deaf people in addition. Some sign and don't speak. Some sign and do speak. Some sign and wear hearing aids or cochlear implant. Some don't sign at all, or a little, and speak or don't speak, or wear... You get the idea. Plus they have different hearing levels: mine would be about 70%, but officially diagnosed as 'profoundly deaf'.

cochlear implants? Nope, won't work on me

Why not?

I have one. That reminds me to upgrade to Freedom soon, it supposedly allows you to be able to hear your speech so that it comes out clearer.

because my doc's know my history, it will not work for me

I would think they think about it visually.
I heard how blind people dream about sounds...so I guess it'd be something similar to that. Since one sense is impaired another is used to continue whatever function is necessary
