How much info/video is too much or too little before a new release?

So this topic could apply to any media including movies, but I tend to see this come up more when talking about games. It seems most threads I visit ultimately break down only talking about the lack of footage prior to releasing a game/said media.

My question is how much for you is too much or too little? Either way is not an issue, but I scratch my head sometimes. For example someone just posted in the Arkham thread about when they would see new footage. The game won't be out until June. We've already had a couple of trailers, multiple stills and the E3 gameplay video. I'm curious why that isn't enough?

Of course everyone wants to know everything about their anticipated media, myself included, but if that is all I got I'd be happier in the end. I'd go into the game not knowing much about the story, but knowing from one or two gameplay videos that it will be solid.

Still though, when a movie trailer comes out and then 5 more and then 10 TV spots, I have literally gone into a couple movies this year having already seen all of the set pieces and story arcs. What's left to look forward to?

Again, I'm just curious how others look at this. Lately I have noticed a trend of games releasing gameplay much later (like weeks before release) and quite honestly I LOVE that. Nothing is better than finally getting the info so close to release. Seeing Arkham footage so far out makes me want it so bad, but the payoff is so far away. Then there's games like WWE that has put out zero gameplay footage, and the more hyped up I get to see something now the game will be out in just a month...

I really don't like CG (not realtime footage using the in-game engine) trailers for video games. They don't represent what you are buying very well at all.

When it comes to video games, I want as much info as possible without spoiling the story and surprises. The reason for this is because games are very expensive and game marketing is about as dishonest as film marketing these days.

It depends on what kind of game you're talking about though. For a Tekken game for instance, I don't care the slightest if I know basically everything before release. For a God of War game however, I don't want boss battles and the most epic moments to be spoiled. Instead, game mechanics, graphics, animation and game lenght is about all I'd want to know. Heck, I have so much trust in the God of War franchise that very, very little info would be enough for me.

Arkham Knight is a perfect example of a game where I feel that I know enough already, without really knowing much. I trust so much in Rocksteady.

So, all in all, it depends on if the game is an established title that I trust in, or if it's a new IP or from a studio/producer that I don't trust in. An example of the latter is the Spider-Man franchise. TASM2 had barely any marketing and left you guessing before release. Apparently, that game is pretty bad (no surprise). People were craving for more gameplay vids and info because 1) people trust so little in Beenox and Activision, and 2) they showed us barely anything from the game but heavily edited short trailers.

Thats not always true. A lot of CGI trailers show off or hint at what you will be doing in the game, just in a far more cinematic nature. For example, Assassins Creed: Revelations released a trailer showing Ezio doing all these acrobatic moves that he's never done in previous games, but when that game released, we could do said moves. Batman: Arkham Knight is another good example, in the announce trailer we see Batman racing through the streets in the Batmobile, ejecting, taking out a bunch of thugs, then jumping back in the car and speeding off, all things we will be doing in the game.

I know what ya mean though, compare a CG trailer for say The Old Republic to the actual game and its as if they weren't even advertising the same thing.

I don't. I decide pretty early on whether I'm interested or not, and if I am interested then that settles it- and I don't go looking for any new media. With video games that usually requires a few details and some gameplay footage. For movies I tend to make my mind up after one trailer -sometimes not even that. If I know I'm going to see a movie (The Avengers, for example) then I will actively avoid any and all media -I went into my first Avengers screening having seen nothing more than poster.

Story, twists, etc, these are all major things which I imagine the majority of people don't want being spoiled -but I don't even want little stuff spoiled. I want to experience that kick ass action scene or that clever one-liner for the first time in the theater, or with the controller in my hands.

I rarely ever look at trailers and video images put out. Heck I don't even read previews all that much. Id rather go into my games with as little info as possible. Unlike my younger days when I was all over that stuff via the gaming mags, I don't really need or crave info to get me pumped about a game I want
