While I agree, you could also easily pull it off in a 5-6 film series. A straight adaptation of the first 3 or even 4 books, and then 2 films to craft an ending that works. One with the ending of the book series, but perhaps a little different for obvious reasons.

I always thought, way back, that it was a series that deserved the Harry Potter treatment (though I really disliked the 6th novel and don't know that it's workable). But realistically, at least going by King's comments from a while back, it seemed that Hollywood's approach to the material was to always try and make a trilogy out of it rather than give it the room it deserved.

Outside of Ron Howard/Russell Crowe's brief flirtation with the idea of doing it as three movies and three seasons of television I don't think creative forces involved with the property have really been going about it the right way.
