Hugh Jackman is The Greatest Showman on Earth

This movie's box office performance has been fascinating to watch, so I decided to finally check it out for myself, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Yes, it was cheesy, saccharine, treacly...all those things people call it and completely in denial about the real story, but it was so gung-ho and earnest about it that I simply didn't mind? If that makes any sense. The music and choreography were on point, and there wasn't any terrible singing, which frankly is a rare feat for a modern day musical so kudos for that.

On a side note, I'm very curious to hear Rebecca Ferguson's real singing voice, because I've heard she could sing before and was hoping to hear that here, but I totally respect her reasons for going with a voice double on this one given the context.

ive been curious about that too. i must also say i was blown away with how allred sounds in this. she sounds so much better than she did on The Voice and i kinda want to see if she sounds as good on other songs or if it was the magic of this song of hers in the film, which i really like.

Settle knocked This is Me out of the park and i'll also admit that i didn't know Zendaya could sing so good

Well I never watched The Voice but her song here was probably my favorite in the film so I thought she was great here. Is she American IRL? Because if so, she was imitating Ferguson's accent a little while singing (to the point where I was almost fooled that it was actually her), so that could partially account for why she sounds so different to you here.

she's from Utah lol

but yeah, she did a great job imitating the accent. i think i actually like the reprise where she sounds heartbroken more. she sounds great, all things considered lol

here she is on the voice

Ok yeah, you can tell in those clips that she's got a very dynamic voice, but I think it's just the fact that it's a much more powerful song in this movie that makes all the difference.

I've had Never Enough on repeat since Christmas. It's just a perfect storm of song/vocals/performance.

The album has been #1 on Billboard for the last 2 weeks (and might get a third week this week) and the film has crossed 100m domestic. This is it's fifth weekend and it's projected to make more than opening weekend.

Although reviews have been mixed, it seems the people seeing this mostly enjoy it. Checking this out tomorrow I believe.

Hugh Jackman should have been the Phantom of the Opera in the film adaptation, damnit. :csad:

Instead, we got Gerry "Can't Sing for His Life Despite Playing One of the Most Vocally Challenging Roles Ever" Butler.

I was at the mall, and the soundtrack was playing in one of the stores. I don’t think I’ve ever see that happen with a movie musical in recent history (other than animated musicals).

I still need to catch this. My buddy Daniel played the fat man in the film.

I like The Greatest Show, Rewrite the Stars, and the Jackman/Efron duet.

Me too on all 3 songs. In fact that duet"other side" is now my ringtone. Movie is good but not great, too cheesy and schmaltzy and obviously not accurate to real life but it was a good time and Jackman IS amazing in it.

This was a lot better than I expected. I know it wasn't accurate, but the soundtrack was really good and I had so much fun watching it. My mom absolutely loved it

i already preordered the exclusive from Target

This is incredible! The Greatest Showman just keeps on kickin'! In its 6th weekend at the box office, it still made more than it did opening weekend and it still got 4th at the box office this weekend! It is now projected to make more money at the box office than La La Land and to become known as the "leggiest" underdog (biggest "sleeper hit") film of all time with the best "word of mouth" since Titanic! So many articles are being written about this now.

I find this even more astonishing considering how much the critics trashed the movie and how many boycotts the movie had (PETA, anti-Barnum groups, and even some Hollywood media articles from elitists were calling for boycotts). There seemed to be so many people determined to make the movie fail, but the killer word of mouth and passion from the cast and crew seems to have transcended all of this. Audiences have spoken and audiences love this film! :)

Check out this graph of its box office trajectory: https://***********/adambvary/status/957654937164382208

I think it is a beautiful thing when audiences decide they are not going to listen to critics and elitists and instead will love what they love regardless. :)

Really? TGS is currently on $259.5m
LaLa Land made $446

Do you think TGS has another $200m left?

2 things. Firstly, I was referring to domestic totals. La La Land made $151 M domestically (U.S., Mexico, Canada) and that is usually the number people look at in articles, rather than Worldwide totals. Greatest Showman has shown no sign of slowing down and is already at $127 M. All the major box office news analysts now predict it will surpass La La Land in domestic totals. Secondly, The Greatest Showman hasn't yet opened in China, Japan, Philippines and several other major countries. To give you an idea, the Cinderella musical made a total of $125 M in those 3 countries alone, so really it is too early to tell where The Greatest Showman will end up in terms of box office totals. Based on its current numbers, it will be in cinemas in the U.S. for at least another month and when it is finally released in all countries Worldwide, then we will see what happens. I'm not so concerned about Worldwide totals though. La La Land can have that victory. Doesn't take away from the fact that what The Greatest Showman accomplished at the box office against all odds (with so many elitists trashing it and counting it out in its first week), and without any help from Oscar nominations or critics or the press (unlike La La Land) is amazing.

Saw it again tonight. Fourth time.

It’s got great legs but is it profitable yet? It’s listed budget is $84 million and it’s only made just a little over $200 million so far.

Rule of thumb is usually make double the production budget, so now it should be.

its doubled the listed budget, and is almost up to 3x that, how is that not profitable?

It's made more than triple it's budget LOL

Domestic: $128,254,976 48.8%
+ Foreign: $134,492,621 51.2%
= Worldwide: $262,747,597

Plus, it has made a ton of money from album sales. I was looking up how that works, and a decent percentage of that money also goes to the production team, the actors, and the studio. The album is close to going "Gold." This movie has more than made up for its budget and advertising costs.
