Brownback, Landrieu introduce Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today with Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) introduced the Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act of 2009.

“This legislation works to ensure that our society recognizes the dignity and sacredness of human life,” said Brownback. “Creating human-animal hybrids, which permanently alter the genetic makeup of an organism, will challenge the very definition of what it means to be human and is a violation of human dignity and a grave injustice.”

The Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act would ban the creation of human-animal hybrids. Human-animal hybrids are defined as those part-human, part-animal creatures, which are created in laboratories, and blur the line between species. The bill is modest in scope and only affects efforts to blur the genetic lines between animals and humans. It does not preclude the use of animals or humans in legitimate research or health care where genetic material is not passed on to future generations, such as the use of a porcine heart valve in a human patient or the use of a lab rat with human diseases to develop treatments.

Brownback continued, “This legislation is both philosophical and practical as it has a direct bearing upon the very essence of what it means to be human, and it draws a bright line with respect to how far we can go in attempting to create new creatures made with genes from both humans and animals.

“My background is in agriculture, and for a number of years we have been working with crops and animals to produce a superior soy bean, a superior cow, and so-on. We can genetically engineer safe products and herds that are disease resistant or that possess more desirable attributes. But doing this in plants and livestock is very different than doing this in humans.

“The issue is that when you make changes in the germ-line, such changes are passed along to one’s offspring. You could make a change now that could be passed along through the gene-pool for the rest of humanity. We do not know what the full effect of this could be, and it could be disastrous.

“Tampering with the human germ-line could be the equivalent to setting a time-bomb that might detonate many generations down the line; but once it is set, there is no reversing course.

“I am optimistic that our nation we will make a sound choice for the generations to come. Already, in Louisiana last month, Governor Jindal signed legislation into law that would prohibit the creation of human-animal hybrids. That law is modeled after earlier versions of the legislation that we introduce today.”

Yes, fair citizens of America, thanks to the efforts of a bunch of conservative Republicans and, for some reason, Mary Landrieu (does she usually do stuff like this?), you could soon be safe from such threats as the Little Mermaid, Land Shark, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Janet Van Dyne, and of course, Motaro from "Mortal Kombat".

Any thoughts, both cynical and serious? Discuss them here.

They are infringing on my rights, dammit. What if I want some Lupine/ Cat gene therapy to make me Superhuman?

No better than the mutant registration act...

I guess James Cameron's "Dark Angel" will never come true...... :csad:

I agree that it's probably a good thing in the unlikely event that it ever happens, but what's next? Laws prohibiting time travel?

That's not really what they're talking about. They're talking about germ-line manipulation, not gene therapy.

So, with all the things going on in our country and the world, this is what our representatives choose to waste their time on? Shameful.

Guess Brownback finally got around to reading The Island of Dr. Moreau but thought it was a true story

*sigh* How could a show that started of so well, and starred Jessica freaking Alba in tight spandex, spiral so bad after only a season?

Yep, if the writers, and the direction your series is going is doing great....why change it? But, unfortunately they did......what is sad, is they were hiring back season 1 writers, and headed back that direction for season 3....too little too late.

I'm old enough to remember that show (vaguely). It does NOT need to be revived! Fear the Manimal indeed!

I loved Manimal.....

Whatever happened to that guy that played the lead...

Last thing I saw him in was JAWS 3D...

I want to say something funny, or somehow try to say I agree we shouldn't produce human-animal hybrids...but damn that's the pinacle of a time waste bill. I get this sort of thing happens all of the time in sci-fi horror movies, but I would seriously call into question the sanity of any scientist who wakes up and thinks, "Ya know, today I think I want to create a pig baby!!! Think of the benefits to the world! Mothers can now feed their children leftovers in the form of slop from trophs, think of all the food we'll save."

The reason it bothers me, and why I say it's a time waste, is because someone had to take days/weeks/months to plan, and word the bill. Then Senator's had to push back/aside more important issues and bills to mess with this one. It's another notch in a long line time and money wasting that politicians love to take part in. Reminds me of when the government gave 50 million to a researcher to figure out why tea dribbles down the side of a tea pot when you pour it.

Brownback is a Republican, right? Perhaps this should be moved to the Future of the Republican Party thread..
J/K.....sort of.

This isn't as far-fetched as some of you would like to think. While I do agree that the bill isn't necessary right now, it IS something that warrants at least some serious thought. We're not talking about people with feathers or scales here. We're talking about something that will begin with subtle manipulation, likely completely undetectable to the naked eye.

In other words, we're not talking about a "pig-child." We're talking about normal-looking human beings who possess genes from other species.

I certainly don't think this is far fetched at all.......there has been work in this area for decades.

I wonder if something prompted them to make this law now? What do they know that we don't? *adjusts Tin Foil Hat*

Maybe he caught the "Manbearpig" episode of "South Park"?
