Hype Movie Club

It's a real damn shame Tony is played by Elgort because he is really the only thing keeping this movie from being quite literally perfect. Everything else is Spielberg at his absolute best. I mean no one stages a movie the way he does. Him waiting until this late into his career to bless us with a true musical is honestly a robbery.
Honestly my favorite Spielberg movie since 2002.

Already time for May's category, folks. Feels like we're due for a decade again, so let's go back to the one I nostalgically yearn for whenever the blockbuster season hits....

The 1990's

Up to five picks each, voting will be open 'til Friday.

EDIT - Previous 90's flic
ks we've already done and are therefore no longer eligible: Lost Highway, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Good Will Hunting, Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke, Casino, Eyes Wide Shut, Galaxy Quest, Heat, Magnolia, Se7en.

In honor of Mission Impossible, I'm going to go with a Cruise theme

Days of Thunder
Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon
Interview with the Vampire
Jerry Maguire
Run Lola Run
Curious, are DBZ and Run Lola Run part of the Cruise theme? 🤔

EDIT: oh ok I think I got the running joke, but still wanna know about DBZ lol.

I'm in the mood for light and popcorny so:

Total Recall
Kindergarten Cop
The Birdcage
Happy Gilmore
EDIT: Ronin

Not that it needs repeated, but this really is one AWFUL casting choice away from perfection. Elgort is just a black hole of charisma, sucking the air out of every scene no matter how hard his co-stars and Spielberg & co. work to make him look good. This is a guy who has to be so enrapturing that we believe Maria would sleep with him immediately after he kills her brother. And that guy is not Ansel Elgort. But the rest of it is so good it's still worth returning to.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
200.gif

I did not realize this was sung-through! That was a surprise, but it lived up to the hype; one of the most beautiful films I've seen. Incredible performances wrapped in dreamy production design.

I also saw Reefer Madness live on stage, so surely that counts for something :o It was a ton of fun; I really want to watch the movie now.

Onto our May picks!
