This evening I went to go get some food to eat and just before I went , I popped into the bank to draw some money out, and to my suprise I found a whole lot more money in my account , I have no idea how it got there ,or if I can even spend it (over 3 grand), this happend last month before . Do I go to the bank and tell them the situation?

A similar thing happened to me, I went and spent a bunch of money only to find out that the bank caught their mistake and I was out my unmitigated fortune. :(
Tough call with 3 Grand... I say transfer it to savings and wait for a while. that way if they do eventually catch their mistake you might make some interest?

i wish i had your kind of cash problems.

Tell them....If you spend it and they find out about it then they'll make you pay it back. Happened to a co-worker of mine.

Withdraw all your money, close your account, and party, party, party.

this really sucks, cause I really cant remember how much cash I had in the bank before.

You should be able to check your statement for recent debits and credits.

Take it back. Think of the repricutions of keeping the money. First you could get caught, which could lead to possible criminal charges or you being 3,000 in debt to a bank. Second, there is a good chance this mistake will cost a bank employee his or her job and losing that kind of money it would be very hard for the employee to find a new job. Third, someone could really need that money and you would deprive them it due to a bank error. You really want that bad karma on your shoulders for a few thousand bucks?

The bank can tell you recent deposits but that would consist of telling them.

good advice Matt, I will go to the bank tommorow.

Thats computers for you, i would transfer it out into another account.

You could also transfer it to my account.
I'll PM you the details, I'll take full responsibilitie...

I'm not completely disagreeing but:

1. It's the bank's error so he wouldn't face criminal charges for not telling them about the error. It's their responsibility to make sure that the figures are correct as people aren't obligated to check their balances regularly. If he spends it though there's obviously a chance he'll get asked to pay it back at a future date (if they discover the error) and if he refuses then obviously things would get messy.

2. I would have thought reporting the mistake is much more likely to cost the employee their job. If he doesn't report it they might get away with it. The bank isn't going to go soft on the bungling employee just because a customer reports the error. The employee is equally at fault whatever the customer chooses to do.

3. If this money is coming out of another customer's pocket you can bet they're going to notice. All they've got to do is tell the bank and they'll rectify the problem. It's just as likely that the bank has lost money itself and who cares about that?

yes!right away if you spend it and they find the mistake later, you could be in trouble, even if it was their fault!

thanks batgirl4u .

It's still considered stealing if you spend it. You probably won't face criminal charges bc your bank has the power to just deduct the amount from your account. It's the same as if their was a bank robbery and someone dropped a bag of cash and you found it. If you attempted to spend it, they'll prosecute. And i've found out that banks seldom make money mistakes that they don't catch quickly and correct. Now when they mistakes that cosy YOU, that's when they tend to drag their feet.

It could be your over draft protection.

For example, my account usually reads $xxxx.xx on most occasions. However, at first glance, if I wasn't paying attention to the over draft protection mice-type, my account reads $xx,xxx.xx.

Just a heads up. I don't want you to look like an idiot. This could just be a common mistake.

However, if it IS someone else's money... yeah, don't do anything stupid.

Unfortunately, as much fun as it would be having that extra cash, I wouldn't spend a penny of it and I'd let the Bank know about their mistake.

However, you could also let the Bank know that this situation, which is their fault entirely, caused you much "distress" and "unnecessary anguish", which you feel you should be compensated for. ;) *cha-ching*

:D

They probably made a mistake, take it out before they can correct the mistake.
