I put my heart, my soul, into screenwriting.

I just feel like ranting about somethings. When I write a script, I want it to be good. Not crap, good. ....Lately..I've been having some writer's block on my script..my new spec script and I've been a little lazy. This is unacceptable along with day dreaming instead of focusing on the topic at hand. I like to write and I know one day, sooner or later, I will be doing it for a living. ...My weakness is dialouge and character development but I keep improving on that. I feel my new spec script will be my best work to date. I just freaking know it.

Hollywood...hollywood is going to try and break me but it won't. You see, hollywood doesn't care about the script. Doesn't care about the damn quality. No one...well most people in that town, in the biz cares about the screenwriter. Screenwriters are the ones that write the script...not the producers, actors, directors, or anyone else. I know when I sell my spec scripts or am hired to write a script for a studio, I WON'T have full creative control over it. In a way, that makes me sick. It disgusts me. BUT...since I write my scripts with a low budget in mind, some changes like more action, is probably for the better. But when action.....when................................................it overtakes the character development to the point that you don't care about the characters, I don't like it. I don't want cliches in my scripts. I want them out, not in. When I write a movie, I want it to be something original. I'm done with this rant, please don't delete this thread or close it.

So in other words, what you're saying is that you have sold your soul to commercial sucess not a literary one, good for you.

Btw, I agree 100% with ur post.

I am going to be professional screenwriter

I've already written 5-6 scripts. And 4 of them are screenplays for short movies (such as "The Waiting", "Metamorphosis" and "Joy-Joya Killa").

Now I'm writting "Moscow's Cold Wind" ;)

I write direct and produce, so I never get left out.

But I work with quite a few screenwriters, in england, the indie scene is booming so the screenwriter gets a lot more attention here

I write and direct, but I can't produce worth a damn.

BTW, if anyone here is UK based and into making films or writing, let me know, I can sort you out maybe, if I like the material etc etc...

We're working out the specifics of the costume. Eckhart says the rubber gives him a rash.

I'm confused.

I just wrote a script for a movie to be shot soon and this is how we did it.

  1. Ignored all the "rules"
  2. For action sequences the action is described as 2.5 minut fight - to be choreographed according to location and the opponent cast.
  3. Dialoue is all written as an outline - the actors will modify to suit their styles
  4. Characters are also largely dependant on the actors finally cast

How's that for "bad"?

Yet we have funding and should start shooting in December.

How did we do it?

The action scenes all involve experienced (2 main actors have fought Jackie Chan in his movies one on one) action fighters. All the guys are exceptionally skilled. For us to try to write their action scene would be stupid. No one will choreograph their fights as well as they can. Other directors should note this, they waste so much talent in movies it is unbelievable.

The main dialogue characters are being written for specific actors who are well known in our market - for them it is an opportunity for them to act as they see fit for the part. We have several top comedians working with us, for us to try to write lines as funny as them is again stupid. We write an outline with some sample dialogue. And note it will be filled in completely depending upon the comedian cast.

The actors now depend on timing, if the final amount for funding comes in this week we shoot in December, if it is held up a little then we loose the main actress due to other commitments and we re-write the part as a more timid character. The Actress was chosen specially for her personality, and once she said yes we changed the script to suit her popular character more.

In the end script writting is only a very small part in the whole picture, the director and the editing have a major impact on how a movie finally looks and the ability to sell an idea is more important to get the funding in the first place, then finally the ability to sell seats and generate cash is the only way you are going to get repeat funding for additional movies.

Script writing is the start of a movie (well actually a synopsis is) but it is not the be all and end all.

You'll lose a lot of opportunity for subtext and theme if you don't write all the dialogue, but it can still work.

Sounds like how Roger Corman used to do it.

The dialogue is written. But just a guidline - a good actor will do better lines than anything I write.

Though I am working closely with the Producer, so his call is final and he will be present at the shooting too.
