I think I want to be an author, any advice? How impossible is it to publish a book?

Let me list some assumptions first

1) I would not expect being an author as a main job or a means of financial support
2) I can assume that my book wouldn't be a load of rubbish.
3) The minimum amount of success I would like to see is just to have it published and on a book shelf somewhere in a book store or library.
4) I forgot what else I was going to say

How impossible of a task am I looking at here?
Anyone ever publish a book?

I have looked into it when I had started a manuscript. There is something called subisidy publishing. It involves paying so much for them to publish it.

It's extremely possible. Don't know what the process is tho.

No self-publishing or "pay us and we'll review it" kind of thing
I want it to be published the traditional way. For monetary reasons AND for a sign that I truly wrote a good book

i was gonna tell you to check out Lulupress.com but i think that's geared more towards self publishing
