Marrying a cousin was a commonly accepted thing in Western countries all the way up to the late 1800's. While I have some attractive cousins, I don't think I'd ever consider sleeping with them but that's personal preference. It's not as genetically unsound as you might think but I still think most people would prefer to spread out from their own family tree.

What? It's pretty simple. If you go back far enough along the family tree you'll find almost everyone is descended from just a few thousand people. Take Mitochondria Eve for example.

Mitochondrial Eve is named after mitochondria and the biblical Eve.[2] Unlike her biblical namesake, she was not the only living human female of her time. However, her female contemporaries, except her mother, failed to produce a direct unbroken female line to any living woman in the present day.

It's not a perfect theory and there's some discussion about how valid it is but it's good enough for now.
