Identifying a geek/nerd

I don't know about anyone else, but lately I've been hearing the words "geek" and "nerd" being tossed around by pretty much everybody when they're describing themselves; and it seems to me that people sometimes say that they're a geek/nerd just so people won't think of them as being a complete *******.

So is there a way to tell if someone is REALLY as much of a geek/nerd as they say they are?

Why, I was just reading Paranoia magazine yesterday and a woman's article was surveying noted conspiracy theorists to see if they consider themselves to be "conspiracy geeks" and she interviewed one who wondered why having one over-arching field of interest/study/expertise should mean that you're a "geek" and asked "Do we call gynecologists "Vagina Geeks"?

I think that should be the name of crappy band.

Geek is someone who has a greater than normal interest in something, and does so because they specifically enjoy it. Generally having a job doesn't make you a geek about something, so a gynecologist wouldn't be a vagina geek unless vaginas were also a hobby of theirs.

Nerd is a subgroup of geek who like technical stuff like computers, math, science, scifi, etc. As such, geek is used more specifically for people who like geeky things that aren't technical like fantasy.

I think that people saying that is another way of saying they don't take themselves too seriously...which i find to be an important trait.

Nerds are social outcasts, who are too involved in their interests that they can barely function in society.

Geeks are just really into their hobbies.

I never really got the difference but when they call me a nerd or geek I just say Thank You.

Imo, nerd is used as a reference primarily to an academic overachiever or a person who is a prodigy in their own respects.

Geek is thrown around a lot, but I sort of agree w/ what Leto Atrides said: A geek is any person who's an extreme fanatic/aficionado of any particular thing.

Seriously, I just think of myself as a huge fanatic of certain things. If and when I'm called a nerd, geek, or otherwise, I usually am indifferent; I guess people have a need to label and classify.
