If you've seen it, your reviews here

i was intially wary of seeing this because i thought it'd just be blood and gore and violence with no story or anything

That's pretty much what it is though.

I dunno how much "spoiler" territory this is entering, so proceed with caution:

-I never felt like Sparta was threatened. Like, 3 minutes into the movie a Persian messenger comes and states the intent of Xerxes to rule over Sparta, and then they are pretty much at war. Leonidas, while a pretty cool warrior character, is NOTHING more than a fighter. He had one instance where he -wanted- to say "goodbye my love" but didn't, because he was a warrior and couldn't say it.

-The political aspect between the queen and the traitor was rather downplayed. Her scene of retribution was a nice scene and all, but it was hardly this engulfing plotline.

As far as the reviews saying this is the best movie of the decade, I can EASILY think of a whole slew of movies since 1997 that were better than 300.

-Lord of the Rings Trilogy
-X-Men trilogy
-Spiderman 1, 2
-Blade
-Set It Off
-Titanic
-Matrix, Matrix Revolutions
-The Punisher
-Pirates of the Caribean: Curse of the Black Pearl
-Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
-Count of Monte Cristo
-The Butterfly Effect
-Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale
-We Were Soldiers
-Sin City
-Batman Begins

That's just off the top of my head from my own DVD collection alone. There sure definatley tons more movies that I'd rank above 300.

As far as it being the "next stage" of filmmaking, God I hope not. That much CGI and green screen was fine for what it was, but I'd hate if movies starting going in that direction.

As far as it being "epic"; somebody obviously missed Lord of the Rings.

I don't want it to sound like I didn't like the movie. I did. I found a good amount of entertainment out of it. But it was just that; "entertainment"

There was nothing special about the characters, or the plot, and it surely wasn't some groundbreaking method of filmmaking.

I think this film is being ridiculously overhyped. While it was a good movie, it didn't really bring anything special to the table. It was a fancy looking action movie, and that's pretty much it.

What the hell was that about? All that, just say "seen better..." and be done with it!

The movie was ****ing awesome. Ive seen it three times, and it really hasnt started to bore me yet. While it honestly could have done away with all that feel good bull**** that leonidas's wife does, it just doesn't seem to fit in a Frank Miller story. By the way was any of that actually in the graphic novel. And for all you homophobes that think this movie is gay because it has hardbodied men in it. Please the only thing this movie made me want to do when I left was break someones face, this is sincerely the most BADASS movie I have seen in years and its about time. TO THE DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I saw the film last Saturday, but I am just now getting in this thread.

All I can say is that the film is amazing on almost every damn level and I loved every second of it...9/10

CAH

the citizen kane of graphic novels? great novel, but not quite the citizen kane.....coughwatchmencough.

No that titles belong to WATCHMEN which is in the amazing hands of....

you guessed it........

ZACK SNYDER!

So you're saying gay guys can't start some ****?
Geez man, you're always right there with some kind of answer. I'm guessing who ever lives with you, must hate that about you. Nonetheless a funny reply.

I just don't get this "it was violent and made me want to break someone's face, therefore it can't possibly be gay" argument. Haven't you straight and narrows ever heard of bears?

And the people I live with can answer back just as fast.

Sandman I don't know too many gay men who like fighting...Reason being I don't know too many gay men. I'm used to seing em on jerry springer and some of them fight like gurl, and some fight like men. That said a men that is not gay, I feel has more to prove. Their ego is just so big, it makes them crazy. I think a gay guy is more laid back and chill, probably worried about what he will wear tomorrow. Ever heard of "macho man" that's what makes us wanna break stuff...As a matter of fact sandman how about I break your face..

Hey if they kept out the trailer trash ,I'd watch it again... You know what you are starting to become my xerxes... Imagine Leonidas on the Jerry springer show . As the Audience his three hundred spartan. The story is XERXES has slept with Gorgo, and Leonidas has just found out....SPARTA, SPARTA, SPARTA,SPARTA.

Leonidas would knock Xerxes back into the old ages.Leonidas would not stand for that crap at all. Then he'd make Gorgon change her name to something more appealing like Buttercup,or Tulip and maybe take her back.

I can think of one great movie that beats all of those to hell, and it is called 300.The Hobbits needed all those soliders and such to take on Sauron..Do you really need me to explain that Leonidas could kill Sauron with his pinky toe? Sauron would take one look at Leoniads and cut his own head off because the pain he would have taken from Leonidas would have been unspeakable.

You kill me with your replies...*lmol* got any new review..did you post one for ghostrider, I sure would love to read that.

what did you think of alexander...if you saw you should post a review for that.

i'm a girl. so i'm the exception :p

just because i haven't seen it yet, doesn't mean i'm not going to, i haven't made up my mind yet

but, i will be one of the first in line to see TMNT, so i hope that helps me regain some credibility

Or negate even more. TMNT...those days have long since passed, after the third movie, or even the second, I just felt abandoned.
This movie looks as if it's about to do more harm that good.

I will post weekly reviews on here for movies old and new.I have not seen Alexander yet but will because it seems kinda bad haha.

Yeah I am not too excited about the TMNT movie.Just seem like thy reinevented them too many times.Somethings needs to just be left alone.

Well, I saw 300 the other night. And I'll say my reaction was mixed, though it was more on the negative side than on the positive side. This isn't a good film - it is more or less an entertaining one, but far from something worthy of legitimate critical praise.

First, the positives, because they should always come first. Gerard Butler is great and charismatic, giving a very fun performance that literally carries the film. Some of the imagery is lovely (the highlight is the sequence with the oracle... absolutely gorgeous and dreamlike - hopefully that's a sign of things to come with WATCHMEN). The action scenes are, for the most part, quite thrilling, even when they enter very silly territory.

But 300 has many problems. The dialogue in this film is terrible. Yes, I know most of it is Miller's own work - but Miller's dialogue works ONLY on the page (and even then, only barely). You start having actual people speaking it, and it is enough to make your ears bleed. The new dialogue that gets written for the story isn't particularly impressive either.

The "MTV" editing is everywhere in this film. And it's unfortunate, since its overuse really steals away any sense of grandeur or "class" to this film. It cheapens it. In a few instances, it works great (mainly in the battle moments). But in others, not so much.

Snyder has made some bizzare choices in adapting this story. Why does the Persian army seem to be made mostly of orc-like monsters? No such monsters were in Miller's novel, so why are they here? They don't add anything, and come across as more silly than anything. And what the hell is up with that anthropomorphic goat?

The additional material that was crafted for the film (Queen Gorgo's subplot), is often boring. It's frankly just dull council-room nonsense with uninteresting characters. 300 is riding entirely on the momentum of the battle. When we cut away, back to Sparta, we're just biding our time until the battle picks up again.

But this film's biggest problems are with its themes. It asks us to buy into the Spartan ideals of glory, to grow to love the Spartans, to buy into their fight for freedom against tyrrany. The problem is that the Spartans aren't all that great. One of the earliest moments in the film is the baby skeleton graveyard where the remains of their discarded "imperfect" children lie. That's just barbaric and unforgiveable. The Spartan society is frankly not worthy of loving - it's a brutal society with some horrifying practices and misguided ideals.

That's pretty much what it is though.

How could you not feel that Sparta was threatened?
Some big black guy on a horse comes up to Sparta with a bunch of skulls that belonged to the leaders if different cities that had fallen to Xerxes.
Leonidas wasn't just a warrior, he was a great leader...and a great lover. He merely was doing what he felt was best for his people.

As for your list of "movies since 1997 that were better than 300", it was a list of crap. The only film listed that came close was Sin City, as for the rest, I'm a fan of Batman and the Count wasn't too bad. But how could you compare something as beautiful as the 300 to something as awful as the Matrix sequels, or Star Wars, even worse, X-Men. All of the Bond movies are terrible except for Casino Royale, but that's just cause I haven't seen it. And Set It Off...that just sounds like some dance movie in the vain of all those other terrible movies about that same thing, such as Bring It On.

There are spoilers ahead.DO NOT read this if you have not seen the movie.

I have a question for all of you...What is 250 + 50 ? What is probably the best action flick of the Millenium ? What gave not one but both of my eyes a hard on tonight ? What action movie will never be topped ? If you answered 300 to all of these questions then you're on the right track.I saw this amazing movie with Gilmore last night.A couple of hours ago actually.I went to the 10:40pm showing.I saw Gaby there which was an omen saying "David,There is Gaby...this movie will kill you".I went in there knowing this but I still went.A lot like the Spartan warriors in the movie.

This movie will motivate anyone to do something.Leonidas is the Great great great great great great great Grandfather of Charles Bronson. You might be asking yourself..."What kind of name is Leonidas?,It sounds like a disease"Yeah if I could have Leonidas Disease...I would. It would entitle me to kick everyones ass and then be home in time for some Meatloaf. Then after that I could go behead some guys, and come home once again to make love to Gorgon haha.I want Leonidas disease so bad..if it were true. This guy could convince anyone of anything.

He could come up to me right now and say "David you are a midget named Doris and have an abusive husband"...I would reply "...I know" and start crying. This guy is the man, coming in a close second to Mr.Bronson.The damn kids start out being judged to see if they have any inperfections. If any are found they are thrown over a cliff.Much like that one time in Ireland where I killed 7-8 Goats.

So they are trained from birth to kill, and be proud.Leonidas is one bad ass double dollar mother ****er..he could destroy everything. He went more along the route of Ragnarok(The greatest battle with all of the Norse Gods fighting to the death) where as it's better to die in battle with pride then to just not fight at all.Leonidas has some guy from Persia come to see him and ask him if he wants to merge with Xerxes.Leonidas will not have any of it.He kicks the bastard in some hole along with all of his buddies. They go off on some journey because they technically cannot go to war because the most beautiful Oracle said they would perish.

Does Leonidas care? NOT AT ALL!He's bad ass, what does some naked ballet dancer know? Apparently a lot but who cares. What come next is one of 10,000 amazing fights...and by 10,000 I mean 4 or 5.If you do not have a beard this movie will make you grow one.Maybe go out and shave someones head and glue some on.This movie will make you want to be a Spartan. They fight mutants in this movie, and some big ass animals. They cut off horse legs, and push elephants off a cliff.....they show the elephants land and all in the ground below.

The blood effects in this movie, and decapitations are done so well. It's like watching a beautiful symphony of death paint itself on screen. So first the messenger comes and then Leonidas is like..."Hmm THIS IS SPARTA!!"Kicks him down and goes off like I said before and comes into contact with some dudes..the Archadians..or how I liked to look at them OPERATION DEATH.They were there to fight and help the Spartans a little bit. They were all a bunch of non fighters. They fought Cheech Marins people first, and then build a wall out of thier bodies.

Well rocks, and use the bodies as **** to hold it together.BEAUTIFUL,as was the tree layered with dead people. Then they fight the Immortals(Xerxes personal Army). The Immortals have some mutant beast with them.****...before this battle with the Immortals some Corky/Sloth hybrid asks Leonidas if he can join, becuase he was a defect Spartan but his Dad left cause he wanted his boy to live.Leonidas says in the best possible way "Get away freak".That seals his fate later on in the movie but Leonidas. doesn't give a ****.I will not give anymore away but Xerxes is played by some Brazillian actor I will call Pele.

Really great actor.Every part in this movie was played so well.I want Gerrard to be the priest that marries me and my woman.Damn this movie had so much ass kicking I thought I was watching a actual war.The woman in the Orgy scene were....damn..as was the Oracle, and Queen Gorgon.Every woman, even the ugly one,was beautiful.THIS MOVIE IS GOD.I give away spoilers in this because I do not care...You should have seen it already. Haha...might see it again Tuesday.

Despite a few grammatical errors I would have to completely agree with this persons review.
It had an excellent well rounded cast that could have only been better if they had decided to cast Christian Bale...and that is only because he is the best actor to have ever existed (although John Leguizamo does come in at a close second).
The make-up and special effects were amazing and everything looked beautiful.
Some people may be over-exaggerating the greatest of this movie, but it is one of the best movies to come out in a while. I've heard people say many different things about this movie being inaccurate, but it's based on COMIC people, lay off. There are giant monsters and whatnot, it isn't supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be entertaining.
I don't understand how people can not enjoy this movie, even if someone doesn't think it the best, it is still pretty damn awesome.
I was there, Leonidas had a booth, he was charging nine bucks to have your balls smashed in. I did, except it was for free.

Hilarious post.

And you guys say I smell of a troll...:hyper:

ok, sorry to get back into the whole gay subtext thing again, but i just read through quite possibly some of the stupidest posts ive seen in some time. to anyone that thinks this movie is only about whats on screen must know jack about movies. but i suppose that star wars is only about some farm boy, or the wizard of oz is about some guy full of hot air.

the sword/penetration/penis metaphor is hardly new. and hardly subtle.
