someone explain the difference between Macross and robotech to me. That's always been puzzling...

Macross was the cartoon that Robotech was adapted from. Its one of three:

Macross
Mospeada
and Southern Cross

At least that's what I remember...I may have gotten the names wrong.

Robotech is like the Lord of Rings of toons.

It's really more like the Casablanca of toons, or maybe the Gone with the Wind of toons.

Okay Macross is just Macross, the first 37 episodes of Robotech in Japanese called Super Dimensional Space Fortress Macross, and it's where we get Jetfire from. It's a stand alone show from Southern Cross and Mospeada. You see Carl Macek was a great fan of Macross and the offshoots and desperately wanted to bring them stateside but it was a non union project and the syndication rights required an 65 episode minimum so he got a team of writers and stringed together these three otherwise unrelated series. Dana Sterling of SC, for example, is actually Jeanne Francaix and has no actual relation to Komilia Jenius (Dana Sterling) of Macross Saga. Therefore the series SC only seems like a sequel, when actually it's not. And if you watch closely you can tell the series has no actual connection and they aren't even in continuity.
