Superman Returns "I'm still Superman!" Dialogue questions in the Kryptonite beating sequence

In the theater, I thought it was Lex saying something like "I killed Superman!" but after watching the DVD, it's definitely Superman saying "I'm still Superman!" I like the line. And I don't see why people would think it's unnecessary? it works nicely within the context of the scene.

^^I think it was. I doubt that line was in the script to begin with. If you watch the DVD, you see the guy who plays that thug that grabs Superman's face literally coming up with the idea of grabbing his face right on the spot. I feel like Singer probably added that line in after they shot that scene for added drama. I never heard that line in the theatre and saw it three times. Maybe someone else did though.

No i dont think it was, i saw it 3 times in the cinema and couldnt make out what he was saying either, but i remember a similar thread to this around the time of the cinema release, and someone suggested in that thread that he said "I'm Still Superman." So i think it was in the cinema release. Anyway i love the line, i think its great.

The line was not added for the DVD, he mumbles the same in the theater. The sequence of Superman being dragged by his face was not in the script as far as I can remember, nor was that line.
it just sounded like screaming in frustration to me

This thread was open on the Planet almost right after the movie came out and long before the DVD was released. Nothing was added.

and like I said, it just sounded like screaming in frustration to me

It was the same though, that is what I am trying to tell you. I didn't pick it up until I saw it again, the 2nd time in the theater.

And what i'm trying to tell you is that it just sounded like yelling to me

It was yelling...him yelling "I'm Still Superman." :cwink:

not to me, it didn't sound like anything other than frustrated yelling but i'll leave it at that because this is seriously getting old

I understand what you are saying, and I agree with you, the first time I saw it didn't sound like it either. However, there was no changes from screen to DVD in regards to adding dialogue, they might have enhanced the quality of sound though. Which might explain it.

Yeah i think it is just clearer on the DVD because of the sound quality.

That might explain it, but I think this thread might have run its course.

After watching the DVD, I do think he said "I'm still Superman" and I do now question its necessity.

^Why, i thought it was a great line, haunting in a way and very relevant. After all, even without his powers, he is still Superman!

Something I just noticed watching the DVD last night: In the New Krypton beating sequence in SUPERMAN RETURNS, I had thought that Superman was just screaming in pain when he was being dragged by the head, but according to the subtitles, he actually yells "I'm still Superman!" as he's being dragged by his head and beaten by Luthor and the thugs. Then he starts yelling things like "Come on! Get up!", apparently to himself (unless this is supposed to be Luthor yelling this at him, maybe to taunt him).

Anyone else noticed these lines? Not sure what the writers intended for this sequence. Is Superman trying to psyche himself up, even though he no longer has his great power due to the Kryptonite? And is this really neccessary dialogue?

that's interesting as hell man. I could never understand what he was yelling when I watched it. I guess if you were Superman and suddenly you lost your powers you'd be flustered and insane too... it's a pretty cool touch in my opinion. Now I gotta see that part again.

I think he's saying, Luthor you can take away my powers, You can beat the **** out of me, But it doesn't matter I'm still SUPERMAN .

exactly

I think it's the big thug who's yelling, not superman. I don't know what he's saying when he starts dragging superman away but I doubt it's "I'm still superman" which wouldn't make any sense. I have seen the DVD's subtitles but I think it's a mistake.

The thug keeps yelling as he drags superman away. He keeps yelling until he lifts superman up and throws him away. If you listen carefully, the "I'm still superman" quote is said with a brittish accent. The actor who plays the thug is brittish so this makes sense. Also superman is panting and groaning as he is getting beaten. You can distinguish the two voices;
The groaning which is heard when superman hits the ground(after he is thrown) is superman's. The other voice is the thug's. The "come on, get up" line, which also was in the subtitles, is also said by the thug and this also makes sense. ;)

I didn't base this theory on any opinions on how superman should be as a person. I was actually dissapointed when I realised this. I had more symphathy for him when he was screaming and stuff :/

He says "I'm still Superman" You can hear him and see him saying it. He says it like this "I'mmm stilll...Supaman" But even though the guy has his hand in his mouth, he is clearly mouthing it. It still is a stupid, out of place line.

No it's not. It adds to the weight of the scene, then he follows it up with "c'mon get up", it just makes the viewer feel sorry for Superman.

Well if you liked it that is fine for you. I didn't like it, and there are a lot of people that thought the line was just as stupid and out of place as I did. But we each have our opinions. If we didn't we would be robots.

He is definately saying it, but I think it works on multiple levels, but to each his own.

The thug dragging him is huge by the way, he is the rugby player?

I showed it to my friend and his wife who are superhero fans, but they heard bad word on SR so they didn't go to see it. But after I first saw this post I put the DVD in and showed them that scene and they both felt it was just too weird of a thing for a guy getting his ass kicked to be saying. It just seems too out of place. I have seen many people getting their ass kicked and they never said anything remote to that at all. I would have expected a more fight or flight dialogue, but not that. It just is something no one, not even someone with Superpowers would say.

Your opinion, and you're entitled to it, but it makes sense to me. No matter what they do to him, kick, punch, throw, drag, take away his powers, he is still Superman. Whether somebody will scream that out when they are getting whooped, that is debatable.

This thread makes me laugh.

How do you think subtitles are created? Do you think the subtitle team just listen to the film and then add what they think the words are?

No. They have copies of the script. They know exactly what the words are. And whilst they may change the odd word here and there to make things easier to read or shorten sentences during heavy dialogue scenes, they do not make mistakes like assuming someone grunting is actually, "I'm still Superman!"
