I'm TORN between PS3 & Wii U....

Thanks for everyone replying to this thread - its helping me out a lot getting various aspects of which system should I throw my 300 dollars their way....

Wii U - Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, Lego Undercover, Mario 3D
PS3 - GTA,Street Fighter 4, Classic Sega Games, Mortal Kombat X, MK vs. Justice League, DC injustice gods among us

Both Systems have: Arkham Batman, Lego Marvel Superheroes, Lego Star Wars, Ghostbusters the video game, Aliens Colonial Marines

Just thought I would give you a quick correction, the Wii U doesn't have Aliens or Ghostbusters (it does have BC with the Wii Ghostbusters version, though, if that's what you meant). And the Wii U does have Injustice.

Really, though, a lot of whether you chose the Wii U will come down to how you feel about Nintendo games. If you're a big fan of their franchises, then naysayers be dammed, it has really produced some absolutely great titles in key franchises. But if you're looking more for 3rd party stuff over Nintendo IPs, then you're going to want to think a lot about getting a PS3 over a Wii U. In this case, it really just comes down to how much you enjoy Nintendo franchises, since that's basically what the Wii U is this gen.

Got to be honest, I made this thread with ps3 in mind - but after I made this thread and read the replies - I'm def leaning toward Wii U.

The no BC for ps3 to play ps2 or ps1 games is such a disappointment... I thought for sure they would have that technology easily available....

Question - does XBox 360 play regular XBox games ?

Yes, the Xbox 360 does play original Xbox games, but not all games.

Here's a list of Xbox games that can be played on the 360:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360

And looking at that list, pay attention to the notes beside the titles. The Xbox emulation on the 360 had a lot of problems.

I should change the title to "Torn between X-Box 360 and Wii U" - lol.....

X-Box 360 has BC and here are some titles that look mighty interesting to my tastes - If you guys have played these and have any recommendations - LET ME KNOW! These are the games I could get that wouldnt be available for Wii U:

This may sound weird to you guys being big gamers - but the thing is I will start with older games and work my way up to the newer ones... I wont even get any 360 games until I play a majority of the regular xbox games I wanted.... I want to catch up. Assuming i get the xbox 360...

I'm still really disappointed PS3 nor PS4 has BC...... So many of the Marvel v. Capcom, Street fighter games i wanted for that system..

if you are going to play the old games first, and not even touch the last gen games ( PS3 or Xbox 360 ), why not just get a used PS2 system for cheap and use that to play all the PS1 and PS2 games you want?

then, once you've caught up, the PS3 will probably be even cheaper and you can get that to play the PS3 games you want.

Yeah, I was about to suggest the same thing really. It seems you're a lot more interested in older games, so why not just get a PS2? You can find them super cheap at this point.

Then why get a Wii U?

Get a PS2 or Xbox. Then get a PS3 or 360. Then get a Wii U.

Hell, you can probably get a PS2 for 50 dollars. I did. Use it more than my Wii U.

yeah.

the only downside to using the older consoles on a newer high def TV is that the older consoles ( PS2 or Xbox ) aren't "optimized" for hd output. So, the games may not look that great on a bigger, hd tv.

what tv do you have BadrHari? is it an hd tv? or one of the older tube tvs?

I have both...Older tube tv and a normal hd tv.

X-Box 360:
Lego Star Wars Saga
Lego Star Wars III - Clone Wars
Arkham Asylum, City & Origins
Lego Batman 2 & 3
Lego Jurassic World
Lego Marvel Superheroes
MK
MK vs. Justice League
Injustice - Gods Among Us

I know it seems a bit 'movie franchise-y' , but thats the stuff I'm into....

And to the point of PS2 & PS3 - the reason is X-Box 360 would be much cheaper than getting two systems, even if the PS2 is cheap, it would add up. Thats an option for sure, but an expensive one.

fair enough.

and you can't go wrong with getting an Xbox 360.

And another plus is that the Xbox One will be getting BC with Xbox 360 games this November, starting with 100 titles with more added later.

So, by the time you get caught up playing all the older games, the X1 may have built up an impressive library of 360 BC titles and may even play original Xbox games ( which MS has also discussed ). Then, you can keep your old games and trade in the 360 console towards an X1 if you want to upgrade.

Just make sure the original Xbox games that you are interested in are on the BC list for the Xbox 360 that I posted earlier.

Also, if you are going to buy a used 360, make sure to get one of the newer/later models. The earlier models had hardware problems like RROD (Red Ring of Death ) I believe - though other posters here may be able to comment on that more.

The newer Xbox 360 model is the "E" model, I think. and it looks like this:

I should of specified about getting a new console - I'm nottttt big on getting used consoles. I understand it saves ppl money, but something about buying something new is much more appealing. I wouldnt want a used console...

Thats why PS2 is still 189 and PS3 200. Pretty pricey - and the thing is that would KILL me if suddenly PS4 got BC and i just dropped 400 on the older systems, when I could have gotten PS4 with the whole PS library at same price! Thats why I created this thread and getting feedback from you guys - you guys have better opinions bc u know more about the video gaming system world.

The question I had, which is why I logged on is Wii U - can it play Gamecube games ? I ask bc there is one in particular I really really want - rogue squadron. I heard Wii can play Gamecube - but I couldnt find anything on net about Wii U being able to play Gamecube games. Just wanted to also mention that I researched Wii quite a bit last night and just found out the Wii virtual store contains classic Sega Games ! Nice !! And I noticed two lists - virtual console store for Wii and Wii U - with the Wii having many many more titles to get - can you get those same titles with the Wii U ?

The X-Box One playing all X-Box games with BC is extremely interesting - but there is really no XBox One games I'm interested in at all. I'd rather get the 360 for one fourth of the price.

Another question - since I'm really researching this - any advice for me if I bought a X-Box 360 with 4 gb on how to expand the memory ? It seems from my reading online there is quite a few options - just throwing that question your way....

It seems each option there is pros and cons - and I bet you hardcore gamers have the same issues unless you got plenty of money to drop on all the systems.

If PS4 had BC - I would be sold because Battlefront for PS4 looks unbelievable !!!!! There is a big thread on this forum about that game and I'm going to check that out to gain some ideas of how great that game is.

And I know this is probably a whole other thread topic - but when XBox 360 and PS3 systems came out - which one did you purchase or was more interested in and did you not regret your decision (assuming no one that bought XBox 360 experienced the red eye) ?

The Wii U doesn't play Gamecube games, no. You can access all of the Wii games on the Wii U yes, but there's a bit of a catch. Basically, the Wii U has something called Wii mode, which essentially turns your Wii U into a Wii, and that is how you can get access to those games. To do this, you need to have a Wiimote, and the Wii U does not come with a Wiimote in package, so you'll have to purchase one.

You can buy HDD with more memory for the 360 specifically, I believe, but honestly you might as well just get a system with more memory at that point. You'll probably spend just as much getting a new HDD as you would the price difference between the 4GB version and one with more memory.

I can't really speak to the Wii U and Gamecube games, so other posters who are more knowledgeable on that will have to help you there.

As for the 4 GB Xbox 360, I think you can add a bigger hdd to it. But, you can only use a proprietary drive from MS. So, when you add in that cost, it's probably just easier to buy a new "E" model console that already has a 500GB drive in it.

at Best Buy, a 500 GB Xbox 360 bundle is $250:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/xbox-360/xbox-360-hardware-console/abcat0701001.c?id=abcat0701001

Last gen, I purchased a 360 first and then a PS3 later on. I don't regret buying either, however, I ended using my PS3 more because the PS3 was a better all-purpose media machine, the online play was free ( not anymore on the PS4 ), and I liked the fighting games and RPGs that tended to favor the PS3 more.

also, in regards to buying used vs new. I understand your point and I agree with you when it comes to buying the latest consoles. I prefer to buy those new.

However, for older consoles that are well past their "prime" or life cycle, I would buy those used for a cheap price.

I would not spend $189 to buy a new PS2. Not when Gamestop sells used ones for $50-$70.

http://www.gamestop.com/browse/playstation-2/systems?nav=28-xu0,138b-c4

so, if you really want to play those old PS1 and PS2 games, then I still say you're better off just buying a used PS2 at a good price ( $50 - $70 ).

then, in several years time, when you're ready to move on to PS3 games, you'll be able to find a used ( or even new ) PS3 at a better price. Or maybe by then, the PS4 will have added BC. If not, you can pick up a PS3 at a cheaper price and enjoy all those PS3 games, which will last you perhaps another few years.

Then, if you want to finally get a PS4 for all the PS4 games you've missed out on, the PS4 will most likely be cheaper by then.

This is another dumb noob question - What do you need 500 GB for ? I just want to play the games off the cd - will 4GB (for xbox) be enough just to save games ? What are the advantages of getting the 500 GB ?

Also, playing online and connection online with XBox - how does this work ? I obviously have internet, would my current internet be involved with going online ? Do I got to plug in xbox to modem maybe ?? I'm just wondering ?

for last gen consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3, the hard drive is used mainly to store game save data, digital games, and digital add on content for games ( DLC or Downloadable Content ), as well as apps like Netflix, YouTube, etc.

You also have to download patches/updates for the games. And all that stuff adds up ( and quicker than you think ).

You can also install the game onto the hard drive for faster loading - though, I think that's optional on the 360. On the PS3, I think some games install data onto the hard drive automatically.

So with 4GBs, technically you'd be able to play games off of the cd, and you'd be able to store some save game files. But, if you wanted to buy digital games or buy digital DLC add on content or download some entertainment apps, that 4GB would fill up fairly fast.

That's where the 500GB hard drive would come in. Though I think that would be more than enough for your needs.

In addition, you probably won't have access to the full 4GB anyways, since the operating system of the console takes up some space. So, you'll probably only have access to 3.5GB or something.

I wouldn't waste money buying the 4GB version. just spend a little more to get the 500GB model.

as for going online, yes, you would connect your console to your router either wirelessly or through an Ethernet cable.

That's the 1st step.

If you want to actually play with other gamers online, then for the Xbox 360, you would also need to be a Live Gold member which runs $60 per year ( or $25 for 3 months ). You can often get these cheaper like around the Holidays or through other special promotions.

You can either sign up and charge your credit card or you can buy subscription cards at your local game or retail stores.

For the PS3, there's a similar subscription service called PS+ that goes for $50 per year. HOWEVER, for the PS3, a PS+ subscription is NOT needed to play online against other gamers. It IS required for the PS4, though.

On the Wii U, I believe there is no online subscription needed to play against other gamers.

If you did go for the X-Box 360, you'd probably want one with a bigger hard drive. One of the big reasons is you seem to want many of the older games and these might be cheaper to download than to hard physical copies of. Keep in mind, the 360 and PS3 are last gen systems, they're being phased out of stores, however, you can get digital copies for a fraction of the cost. All those Lego games you want, if you wait for a sale you can get them for $10 digitally.

Also one thing you mentioned above was thinking about a PS4 for the new Star Wars Battlefront, that's coming to the Xbox One as well. You seem to want primarily third party titles and the great majority are on both systems. Battlefront and Mortal Kombat X are on both PS4 and Xbox One.

Its DVD....lol. CDs havent been used to store game media on in almost 10 years

I'm researching XBox 360 quite a bit at this point... I can get a brand new XBox 360 4gb for 150. It can play mostly all the regular xbox games I am interested in. So for the bang for the buck, I can get the system the most cheap and have the most games.

Has anyone played Scarface or Godfather video games ? Any good ?

I'm not even sure if you're reading these posts, but for your sake, do not buy a 4 GB Xbox 360.

4 GB is not enough for anything. You will not be able to download games (from online, or from the game disc). Get 250 GBs. You can upgrade a 4 GB 360, but it's a hassle (and the price difference makes it pointless).

Like most consoles, the 360 is wireless, so assuming you have wifi in your house, you would just connect with that. You can plug in an ethernet cable if you want.

Microsoft requires an online subscription to play games online. It'll set you back about 40 bucks a year. It comes with some benefits, like discounted games, and two free games every month. Usually actually a pretty good free game every month. A not horrible value, really.
