To all you doom saying American Government hating people: This has no chance of passing AT ALL, look at how the ".xxx" thing went.
If hating the corruption inherent in D.C. means I hate the government, so be it.

Yes it means that exactly.

You all understand that the internet is probably the only clear path to finding any sense of truth in this world right? This is motivation enough for them to find a way to keep content away from you.

It's one step to the complete control that some people of this world wish to have and we really cannot stand for it. Without the ability to search for ourselves what we want to know, there is nothing to be learnt and only more information to be told.

And thats exactly why this will not pass at all.

Well, the beauty of technology is that no matter how many laws and restrictions they try to put on it, new ways of getting around them will always be available. Witness the dam with thousands of leaks that is file-sharing. Every time the Dutch Boy (as played by the government) sticks a finger in one hole to plug it up, another three spring somewhere else, just out of reach. The hackers, innovators and technically savvy people will always be ten steps ahead of the government where the internet is concerned. It's pretty futile for the fed's, really, and a giant waste of taxpayer money.

BWAhahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....oh geez...

Yes the Internet that "bastion of truth"

At least you have the ability to discover things on your own and not rely on what you're told. Of course, I know I'm speaking to a brick wall here so, what's the point. You'll see the truth at some point, probably when you have a gun pointed at your head telling you what to do or believe instead of just letting them tell you what to do or believe.

We can hope.

If history has shown us anything, this will not pass, not even close.

But its still annoying how EVERY time something like this absurd idea comes up we have these doomsayers saying "omg the internet is coming to and end" etc....it gets boring and old.

You always had the ability to do that, you've always had a library and the ability to find things out on your own. Only now in order to find things out you have to wade through sites that give you information like pornography, Bush is Hitler, Trey and Matt are geniuses, Christopher Walken for President, Evolution doesn't exist listen to the Bible. In fact the Internet has made the problem of discovering the "truth" even worse. Never before could I say things without backing them up or presenting evidence. The Internet is filled with everyone's bullsh** and opinion. It takes no time to make a webpage and get it on google. Don't act like this place is some bastion of truth, thats ignorance to a T. Healthy skepticism is good, even conspiracy theorists could publish books back in the day, however books go through a process called peer reviewing. Its in essence fact checking. You had to list your sources and those sources in turn had to verify what you quoted or the information you got was in fact what they said. Thats very important in information gathering. If it doesn't have a bibliography, I don't touch it for a paper or project. period. I want to know the person who is speaking to me is a credible expert in said field. The internet destroyed that almost completely. Now I have to learn to be even more selective with the information I look up. So no, the internet is at best a double edged sword. All that good information that you used to have to "back up" can get to me quickly, thats very good. However its bogged down in about 98% crap and filth coming from some blogger who just decided one day Bush was an idiot after watching the Daily Show and South Park and decided now he is a credible political analyst. whoopie.

/agree

The internet gave any idiot with an opinion a place to spread their senseless crap to other bored like-minded idiots.

Yeah lets censor the internet like they do in China. Who needs free expression anyway?

I don't think necessarily it was the best information revolution. It proved we were very disparaging and debased as a people, it proved we all have opinions and we'd rather spout them then get actual knowledge. Socrates predicted it, he hit the nail right on the head. The common people always express knowledge they don't have and speak as experts on things they know nothing about.

Oh I don't want it censored, free expression is a good thing, but don't act like this is some bastion of truth. You have to be real about what the internet is, and more sadly what it revealled about people in general.
