Iron Man Iron Man a 2nd Tier Character?

Though I knew what Ironman was I've never picked up an Ironman comic in my life. I guess I'm pretty interested in reading the comics all the way back from the 60's on up. Hope here are TPB editions of the older, Golden Age stuff.

^^ the current run is amazing! it's a pretty underrated book in my opinion.

After this weekend Iron Man is a 1st tier character. Everyone I'm friends with that didn't know who he was several months ago sure does now.

Yeah, I think this movie may be putting Iron Man firmly into the mainstream conciousness, but before that, at least popularity wise, he was not Spider-Man, Wolverine or The Hulk, and as far as marvel goes, those are the guys they always push and that most people know about.

I agree that "1st tier / 2nd tier" - as the press is using it - means how much your average Joe Blow USA knows the character. And 2nd tier is about right.

As far as the movie and the press are concerned, IM's place in the Marvel Universe isn't what the ranking is about.

i could be mistaken though, but didn't he used to have a cartoon series? in the 60's and in the 90's?

I remember the 90's one, but it was a Sunday Morning cartoon if I recall... not really a widely watched thing.

i vaguely remember the 60's or the 70's one...

It was pretty funky. the animation didn't move at all. it's like a damn slideshow...with someone narrating the whole thing.

Iron Man is a top tier character among comic fans. Likely, if you read Marvel, this guy goes in your "big seven" as it were. He generally maintains his own title, and is one of the Avengers main three, frequently acting as leader and chairman. His role in the MU is crucial, and is often the focus of many major stories. Amongst the public, until last weekend, he was second tier at best.
