This has been in my mind for 3 years and finally have figured out how to pull it off. First was the idea. I started collecting old electronics and taking them apart for the mother boards and computer components. Next I drew a quick sketch of what I wanted the end piece to look like.

Next step was trying to figure out how to do the mask, chest piece, and hand. I created a mold that could be filled with plaster to do heads, however.... it did not give the results that I wanted. The head did not look like Iron Man's mask. The Mask is actually longer than a normal face, so I had to come up with a new idea. I had the idea to use the chest of a plastic manequin that I had bought from a store going out of business for the chest piece, but again...same result. So that had to be scratched.

I got lucky on the hand.. after 3 tries I finally found the perfect mix for the hand and forearm. I used extra large rubber gloves and filled them with plaster-a-paris, shaped them the way I wanted it to look and let is cure for more than 3 weeks. Plaster stays pretty wet for about 3 weeks and cant be worked with till it completely dries.

The palm will be hollowed out and an LED light will go into the hand serve the purpose of "Repulsors"

Finally decided to use plywood and under laminate to give a 3-d effect to the mask and Chest piece. This will be glued and screwed together. Eyes will be cut out of the mask. Another LED light will be placed in the chest piece and mask. After this is put completely together, it can be placed on a 2x3foot piece of plywood, then mosaiced.

I will use Spectrum Whispy, stained glass for this piece.

Started last night placing the glass on the IronMan. Cut my hands to pieces too!! Ouch. Hopefully finish the chest tonight.

My old shop teacher said "cut the wood Not the Meat" Why use Wood?
You know those plastic cups from mcd's or other restaurants - hard curved plastic? Spray paint them Red, and gold and use some zacto knives to cut them or scissors
use some nilon fishing line to hold pieces together - I doubt they'd melt together - or certain glues would make them stick be more moistre resistant too and lightweight

I actually had some hard plastic human forms (got from clothing store going out of business). The problem becomes just not sturdy enough. If there is the slightest give in the form, the glass will come off no matter the glue. I wanted to give this a cut and dry "straight" look to it. Still have alot to do; The face piece, chest, hands, background, wiring (the repulsors and chest will light up).

Oh just as a sculpture - using it in aforementioned plastic - might be something to actually wear if done right and applying material inside - and might actually look like iron man after if done right

The glass is finished on the chest piece and small abdomen piece. These will be grouted and "wired" before being placed on the display board. Next up the mask, then the gloves.

Not being a dick, just an honest observation.

Is the Helmet a bit small, proportion wise, in relation to the chest? Or is it just me?

Perhaps it's Rob Liefeld inspired - who knows

The helmet will be a little bigger once the glass is put on it. Also the picture is taken at an angle which makes the object further away, smaller....

But yes it is a little smaller...

Finished the helmet and have started the hands.

In doing the hands, I had to drill a spot for the repulsors and a hole for the electric cord. These have been prepped to mount to plywood with a hole drilled for a "wall anchor" in the bottom of each hand and a corresponding whole in the plywood. This has been very difficult as the plaster is so delicate. I have broken off fingers and shattered the left hand. Thank goodness for liquid nails.

I cut multiple small squares for the hands as they are curved and large glass pieces will not glue snuggly to the piece.

All pieces will be grouted at one time once they are all finished using red grout.

Very creative, lots of time and effort out into this. Can't wait to see more

It is taking much longer than anticipated. I have to have it finished by July 15th. I doubt I will get my hulk piece finished by the end of the month.

As a Suggestion - cut up plastic cups and paint them and apply them to sections (things you get at like Mc d's and so on) also you can recycle them into something useful - Doing it correctly may make it look a lot smoother than using tile pieces, and be a lot smoother - though your guess is as good as mine what glue would be used to apply to your castings - Also you can buy solid rubber / plastic binders for larger areas (or those plastic divider things) these also come in primary colors :)

i enjoy seeing the pictures as this progresses

I have had to take a break on the hands due to other things requiring attention. I am entering this piece in an art show which was to be this Sunday, but has been postponed till September. I should be able to finish it, Hulk, and maybe a Batman piece by then.

Finally finished the hands. After the glue dries completely, then all the pieces will be grouted. Slowly but surely this is coming together.

Hey Grafffik, I appreciate the suggestion, but my passion is Stained Glass. I was in Chicago and went to a stained glass museum, ever since I have been dabling in it. I thought..."Noone does comic art using this medium.." Something different. I have used busted records and glow in the dark stars, but stained glass is what I love. I will post a picture of the mosaic I did with busted records, cut up glow in the dark stars, and metal filings.

This is a mosaic of Ghost Rider I did using broken records, cut up glow in the dark stars and metal shavings.

The second pic is of the mosaic in the dark

Seriously, this is awesome. Your passion must be so strong about this. Like you said, slowly but surely it is coming together in an awesome way...I wonder If you are planning to make the other pieces of the body too?

I don't intend to do the other body parts, but have an intresting way of bringing the whole thing together... Coming soon.

And what about mobility?? I believe those junctions will not work, the match will look torn, broken. For demonstration, when divided, there will be a gap between barrel and abdomen. How do you will rectify it?

Very good sculpture by the way! I love the mechanical sculptures
