The lack of definitive news is worrying me.

A few weeks ago Raimi mentioned something about getting a writer he could work with, implying that no script, writer or director are definitely attached, but things are going on behind the scenes.

I believe that 2009 is definitely out by this stage, and am beginning to wonder how feasible 2010 is now.

While films like F4, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk have much shorter periods between filming and release the Spidey films have all had huge development periods with shooting usually beginning nearly 2 years before release date (the implication being that script and casting are completed much earlier than that).

So with that, and a possible trade strike for June 2008, what do people feel is the deadline for a 2010 release date?

I'm thinking it has to be sorted by the end of 2007, but am open to correction.

It only takes about 6 or 7 months for principal photography. As long as the shooting begins in early '09, then 2010 is plenty feasible.

Agreed, 2010 sounds perfect to me

Though I'd really wish that it would be released in 09 but I'm not getting my hopes up...

2010 isn't going to happen. We're pretty much at the end of '07. The script right now for sm4, is going to have to be planned a lot more carefully than before because, despite sm3's BO success, the film's main criticism was the increasingly flawed script. Also, there's a lot of competition out there being released over the next 2-3 years in which, a new spidey film (take into account spider-man's novelty has worn off) would have to step up its game almost 10 fold.

(take into account spider-man's novelty has worn off)

Best quote ever! The character has been around since 1963, his image (both film and comic) is on millions of products, the comics still sell well, the movie trilogy is one of the most successfull trilogies ever, a new animated series is coming, he is the most popular superhero, the most popular theme park ride is The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man......and his novelty has worn off.

You're damn right. After 3 movies, Sony needs to step up their game. Its a huge franchise, but in order to keep it up, they need to seriously focus on a strong script.

EDIT: matthooper I think 7000 was talking about the novelty of the films, not the entire Spider-Man franchise itself. Spider-Man is more popular than ever, but the movies themselves seem to be losing the momentum it once had of being a "Spider-Man" movie.

Apply common sense within the context I am speaking.:whatever:
The novelty of seeing spider-man in a movie has worn off to the point that you can't just come up with any crappy story, it has to be deemed worthy.

Why do you think shows like spider-man unlimited and the mtv version, hell even some of the games of the last 3 years and the comics themselves have been met with dissapointing opinions and reviews?

We've had 3 movies, seeing spider-man just isn't that big a deal anymore. The studio have to come with the fire in order to keep these movies alive successfully.:o

That makes no sense at all. Apply context to what? First you say you were talking about the novelty of the films that has worn off. To a point I might agree.

But, to prove your "point" you mention shows (all years ago) and comics have met with dissapointing reviews and opinions. These were all before SM3 and at the height of his popularity.

Because they sucked?

You're deluding yourself if you think SM4 in 2010 isn't going to happen. Keep in mind that casting for SM3 didn't even begin until early 2005. The only thing that's going on right now, and for the next few months, is writing the script - that has to happen before casting can begin (since there's no contract in place anymore).

And you're not going to hear weekly updates on the writing process. You might hear whenever a draft is completed or an idea is pitched to the execs, but for the most part the rest of this year is going to be fairly quiet on the SM4 front - not because nothing's happening, but because scripts don't warrant big announcements.

They started writing the script right after the success of SM2...so we are still in a good time frame as long as things are under way before the year ends.

Even though I'm in a hurry, and time is not my best friend. I'm hoping 2011 instead of 2010.

Thanks to James Cameron's Avatar, I'm going to skip right pass the movies of 2008.

2010 is the perfect time to release Spidey4, and it can defenitley happen. They pulled it off with Spidey2 and Spidey3, and I'm sure they will pull it off with Spidey4.

SM3 was in pre-production for a year entirely because of the script. For one thing, Raimi is an (admittedly) slow writer. On top of that, he and Sargent had to make constant adjustments to the script to include the additions that the producers wanted. The script wasn't even finished until about summer '05.

Like I said, it only takes around 6-7 months to actually shoot the film, and then another year for post-production (though that depends on how FX intensive the movie is). There's really no reason for SM4 not to be out by 2010, even if they have to recast.

Yup Topher said when he signed onto the film (which was roughly around May-ish 05 IIRC) that the script wasent even finished yet.
So if for whatever reason Raimi did come back as director, have someone else right the script.

Whoa people need to chill here... how is 2010 out of the running? You guys realize Wolverine got its director THIS YEAR... the movie is coming out next year.... there is a world of time... the EARLIEST they need is to get a director spring of 2008 with pre production late 2008... pre production in 2008... that is A YEAR AWAY people... I know its boring and there is no news to report... but one more time... LATE 2008 to begin pre production... now how on earth is there not enough time. Even if its a new cast... you don't cast leads for roles two and a half years down the line...

THe one thing that could slow productin down is the possible SAG strike that may or not be coming up.
Marvel knows it is sitting on a money bucket here. There will be more films, bet on it.

That was an additional point. My underlying point is, regradless of how popular spider is, if something is garbage, it's not going to sit well, regardless and wont be accepted just because it;s, spider-man.

Because they sucked?

Yes, they did.

...and? Like I said, it's got to be a pretty damn good script. There are far too many good movies being released in the next few years for spider-man to just pop out and expect big things, especially with the critical bashing sm 3 got. Also, assuming the cast do return, how long will it take for them to renegotiate a new contrcat that pleases everyone involved? Thirdly, we don't know anything about the schedules of the actors, they have no obligtion to keep time open for the spidey movies seeing as they have no bnding contract at this time. So, please don't talk to me about delusions, I'm being realistic as opposed to being some narrow-minded fanboy.
Look at Bond, the most successful film franchise ever. DAD came out in 2001, recievec bad reviews and the next Bond didn't come out until 5 years later and upto that point, Brosnan was still thought to be Bond BUT his ass was booted in favour of Craig. So, don't talk in abosoloutes, please because anything can happen.:whatever:

And you're not going to hear weekly updates on the writing process.

I never said there would be.

You might hear whenever a draft is completed or an idea is pitched to the execs, but for the most part the rest of this year is going to be fairly quiet on the SM4 front - not because nothing's happening, but because scripts don't warrant big announcements.

Well, regarding big movies such as spider-man, scripts do warrent big announcements, such as, who's writing it and when it's completed, hell, we even get little interviews where we get a mention of just how far into the completion of the script is....also, you may want to consider a new potential factor of this new fee-upgrade writers in hollywood are now supposed to be getting, where they can now command upto over $2million.

There's really no reason for SM4 not to be out by 2010, even if they have to recast.

This isn't like Harry Potter, where the writers and directors are following an already planned out story. These spider-man movies have no underlying planned stories for the continuation of the movies, they're just made up prior to shooting, there is no long-term planning involved, like there should have been. A spidey movie by 2010, just doesn't excite, 2011 makes more sense for reasons I've already mentioned and also because, it gives the audience to breathe. Spidey's getting a long-running animeated series next year, he'll forever be in the spotlight and have a certain amount of over exposure, there's no rush to bang out another movie just for the sake of it. 2011 makes more sense imo.

Yeah, Iron Man and the new Hulk have short run in times too. As did X3 and the two F4 films.

However the Spidey films (as well as Star Wars and Superman Returns) all had much longer production schedules.

Nobody wants a rushed X3 job on SM4!

It's 2007. It's been four months since SM3. Show some patience.

Spidey just came out a little while ago...I'm in no real hurry. I have a few other films to see before SM4 is out, but I'm still interested. And if the rumored Venom movie comes out in between the two films, well...
