Just the other day she asked me if Jim Carey escaped from Arkham Asylum when Ra's blew up Arkham and if he's going to be in the The Dark Knight.
Ok, so your friends are ignorant. So a lot of people are ignorant. They're going to be confused and ignorant of certain things, period.
That doesn't change the fact that these concepts, once someone actually thinks about them and reasons them out, are not difficult to understand.
Correct. There's nothing terribly confusing about alternate universes (meaning Elseworlds type stories...I HATE stuff like Exiles and all that and a milion alternate futures...I prefer one universe and one timeline). The fact that people are kind of stupid wont be changing anytime soon though
I got pwned beause he isnt aware that people are too stupid to realize that Batman Begins and Batman are in different universes?
Allow me to explain the pwning process...I...meaning ME...HERETIC...says something so stupid that I end up eating crow when someone posts a funny reply.
This has nothing to do with what I say. It's what the GENERAL PUBLIC is saying. The same people who think the general public wont be confused thinks that the general public isnt confused by the Ultimate Universe. The general public doesnt read comics!! I will go out on a limb here and say that I probably talk to more people on any given day than you do (I work in publicity and public relations...talking to people all day is my job). I wear a Batman belt buckle (which is SWEET looking btw) so Batman OFTEN comes up in conversations with the general public. Since I live in a tourist destination, these are random idiots from all over the country. These idiots DO think that the Nolanverse and the Burtonverse are one and the same. Now...I wont vouch for the Mensa membership of these tools, but the fact remains...I OFTEN enounter people who aren't aware of the difference.
Are they complete fools? Yes. Will they be confused? Yes
That is the way of the general public...which is why it's always tricky when us nerds invite them into our world.
I think it's ignorant that people on here expect the majority to understand the diferent universes.
Not everyone realises that because Batman Begins is a reboot, many of the things that were told in previous incarnations shan't happen in this movie. Or that the Clark we saw in Smallville is not in the same universe as Returns, as far as they are concerned, there is only one universe and the TV series is explaining the begining, Returns is a movie set in the not too distant future.
The general audience who saw Returns, i feel they viewed it as in the same universe as Reeve, not because they are avid comic fans or waste hours on these boards *****ing about the suit colour, but because the theme tune is the same, the style is similar and the use of Marlon Brando.
Ok, you can argue that Begins is obvious it's in a diferent universe as it retells the story and is diferent to Batman 89, but because so much ground was covered with the bat nipple era - riddler, joker, penguin, catwoman, bane and poison ivy, general audiences aren't aware that the story shall be retold, but in a diferent way, they're all expecting it to follow like the old movies, i mean, when i heard joker was in TDK, images i instantly got was of Nicholson.
Btw, this post is not aimed at anyone in particular.
People are stupid, there's no question about that. But here's the thing : people (I'm talking about non-comic fans) don't think/talk/read about these movies enough to even consider things like continuity.
They may very well think that Nolan's and Burton's films are in the same continuity, but who the hell cares? They still watch the movie, they still like it and only us geeks have to worry about continuity.
And, to be honest, I think you're greatly underestimating how stupid people are.
I believe the average American moviegoer is dumb enough to think that BB was a prequel to B89 and still not notice the continuity errors.
Most people, who just go see a movie once and move on with their lives, can think that these films are in continuity and won't notice the details that contradict continuity.
