I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not, but is this movie gonna be more sci-fi? Like...are we gonna be watching Silver Surfer traveling through different planets or something?

Possibly, but I don't think adding outer space alone makes something "sci-fi". Just look at star wars, that's more fantasy than sci-fi. Superheroes to me have always occupied the "middle ground" between sci-fi and fantasy(LOTR/Harry Potter).

^ I guess. But, the first one seemed kinda grounded in reality. So...I was wondering if they were gonna go for straight sci-fi/fantasy.

Grounded in reality? You mean gaining superpowers by a cosmic cloud in space?

I don't know if it'll be any more sci-fi, when you're dealing with the Surfer and Galactus it's fantasy really. It'll certainly be more epic than the original.

Kevin always has the answer! Thank you, ol' lad. :yay:

The comic was the "Twilight Zone" of the Marvel Universe. It was the hard Sci-Fi book of it's time before hard sci-fi was defined.

I see. The first movie, however, didn't seem that way. Hence why I asked.

Yeah... pretty much the first movie (and prob'ly this one) just sucked the butt and in no way represented the comic except for Ben & Johnny's ribbing.

So... then in answer to your question: probably not.

The chase across the world and the arrival of cosmic beings should meld both the sci/fi and epic together

True! You and Kevin have the answers!

I really wanna see Surfer travelling by the Earth! But sci-fi(another spaces) I don't believe...

I would say the first movie, and the comics are clearly more Sci-Fi than fantasy. For instance:

Reed Richards is a scientist, not a wizard.
The Four gain their powers from a cosmic storm, not a magic spell.
The Silver Surfer's powers are explained on a molecular level.

All of this is done with pseudo-science, which borders on fantasy, but the intention is to make it seem based in reality. People really *do* get mutated by cosmic rays, it often results in skin cancer, not the ability to fly, unfortunately. :csad:

As for the second one being more Sci-Fi, I think the original poster was talking about outer space when he used that term. I personally doubt it, I think the FF will be just as earth-bound this time around, but they will be all over the Earth with the Fantasticar. Whoot!

The Fantastic Four were always more into the Sci Fi end of the comic book spectrum. The template Kirby used when he helped Stan come up with the concept was his "Challengers of the Unknown" title he had worked on back in the late 1950's, with 4 explorers taking a trip into outer space. The FF introduced alien races like the shape shifting Skulls, engaged the Soveits in a race to the Moon in their confrontation with the Red Ghost, met the Impossible Man from the planet Popup, the Infant Terrible, followed Doom down into the Microverse, encountered the Watcher from the Blue area of the Moon all within the span of it's first 25 issues. Later on Reed would discover the Negative Zone and encounter Kirby's last great FF villain, Annilihus the Death Who Walks. In Doom's first appearance, the FF use his time platform to travel to the past. So the Sci Fi aspect was always there from the early days of the title.

This...is actually being discussed? I should start a thread questioning if this film will have special effects.

Well I for one am very happy that comic book movie FINALLY have aliens in them (FF2, Spiderman 3). Took a long time coming. Finally we're gonna have story arcs that are truely epic, well up until now it was just about tycoons gone mad basically. :)
Now if only Brainiac was the main villain in the Superman Returns sequel. :)

true very true great answer

If there was a comic movie that was going to deal with aliens in the universe, it was either going to start with the FF or Silver Surfer.

Okay, for sake of argument, lets say Galctus has a decent size role, and is the main antagonist..... will there be any mention of the cosmic entities from the marvel universe, such as Death, Oblivion, Enternity... etc....

just a thought..... thinking it would be kind of a cool nod to the comic fans if they mentioned that Galctus is part of a unvirse control/balance system....

I noticed that in the MTV spoiler Johnny talked about an intergalactic war. I was curious as to whether this is a sole reference to Galactus or if it suggests shadows of the current anihilation story in the marvel universe. That is just a really cool concept. It found a way to introduce new characters as well as reintroduce the Super Skrull.

And I have a question, is it just me or is the super skrull just so cool. I don't know why but klrt I just love that dude.

I say forget about puppet master for part 4, give us Anihilus and the skrulls.

Is it not cool that FF has so much source material to draw on.

Blaster, Inhumans, Fear Monger, Malice, Frightful Four, Salem 7, Kree.

FF could make a jump from earbound threats to intergalactic threats just like that and they have actually with ROSS.

It is all so cool!
