Is it possible to have a pirates of the Caribbean movie without Johnny Depp?

Dwayne Johnson will be cast once Depp leaves.

I honestly think it can. This franchise and mythology has so much damn potential to mine, which with great new characters, it can still be appealing. As much as I love Jack and I'm liking what I'm seeing from his story here, Jack was just this lightening in a bottle thing that caught on, so of course you'd see more of him. But you can do so much more with it. It's like Star Wars. The brand in and of itself sells itself. These are swashbuckling movies that are supernatural with pirates. Keep to that and you should be fine.

Star Wars is a bit different in that the larger universe was always bigger than the characters, basically from the point Obi-Wan mentioned he fought in the Clone Wars in the first film. POTC is really mainly about the one character. Even the first film is nothing without him (and to a lesser extent Geoffrey Rush). Just another Cutthroat Island.

Yes but it would be hard. I haven't seen any of the movies since the third one. Are they any good? The first 3 were fun but I have hard time remembering what happens in them and which is which.

The first was the best then they got progressively worse. The last one was atrocious.

I could see a team movie though with Penelope Cruz, Kaya Scoldelero, Naome Harris and a new character played by the rock and also some other blokes I guess. There's still a lot of pirate Lore to cover

Which brings up an interesting point. The series may have very well run its course with or without Depp. In which case, the question is moot. They shouldn't continue regardless.

You could be right. Sparrow became an icon unintentionally, and you can't really take back those things at this point from where the original intentions started when a series finds its footing. But hey, I'd be curious.

I reckon they can continue, it's called pirateS of the Caribbean, not pirate of the Caribbean

Well I don't agree that Depp is over it. In Fact I think he loves playing the part and will do so for as long as possible.

That being said, I do think a Pirates movie without him would have great potential as long they had an equally charismatic cast with entertaining and Interesting plots.
Personally, I'd love to see Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke, RDJ, Idris Elba, Nic Cage and Eva Green in one of these movies. Throw in Edgar Ramirez, Antonio Banderas, Angel Bassett, Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz, Kiersey Clemons, Selma Heyak, Damian Bachir and Gary Oldman and we might have something here!

You can't do it without some wacky character at the forefront, they can't all be straight men.

Bring back Zoe Saldana!

She left because her experience during the first film was horrible. She doesn't talk about it often though, but she didn't like it at all - from the sexism behind the scenes, the egos, etc.

What's Pedro Pascal doing? That guy needs a swashbuckling franchise like now.

She says it had nothing to do with her cast mates, but the producers, the PAs, etc.

"Those weren't the right people for me -- I'm not talking about the cast," she told the Hollywood Reporter. "The cast was great. I'm talking about the political stuff that went on behind closed doors. It was a lot of above-the-line versus below-the-line, extras versus actors, producers versus PAs."

"It was very elitist," Saldana continued. "I almost quit the business. I was 23 years old, and I was like, 'F—-k this!' I am never putting myself in this situation again. People disrespecting me because they look at my number on a call sheet and they think I'm not important. F--k you.

Well not the PAs, but the producers treating them like poo.

What's sorta nice now is that there's a very slow shift in the culture. It make decades but bad behavior will not be accepted. You'll always going to have a few bad apples, but for the longest time, abusive behavior was the norm, and people are tired of it.

Continuing on the subject of the biz: Daniel Radcliffe was on the Nerdist podcast, and mentioned that his experience on Harry Potter was amazing because it was like a family. Every where it's the same cast and crew coming together, and the crew (including the grips) really protected the young cast.

He was taught to be respectful, and that divas eventually will get their due (karma). So it's been said that he, Emma, and the rest are great to work with...as it should be.

Oh he's totally over it. He couldn't even be bothered to learn his lines and people on set said he was always turning up drunk. And speaking of his best replacement

Jess chastain would be incredible. She could even play real life pirate Anne Bonney!

You know who would be a fun choice if they still had to go with a bloke? Liam Neeson

Sure it is. Maybe it's a local thing because where I'm from it's called alcoholism
