My mom raised me to believe that I make my own trouble, and that my success or failure at life will be my own doing. Why? Because I should never let my race dictate what I do with my life. That's how I was raised. My brother's not in jail because he's black and the government is run by white people; he's in jail because he held up a f***ing store. If this country was run by black people, he'd still be in jail. That's the way things are.
I'll leave you all with this little nugget of joy:
You can sit and talk about whether or not black people in America are owed reparations 'til the cows come home. It doesn't matter. It's never gonna happen, so we have to make our own money. We have to start new legacies. We have to take this amazing gift that our parents, grandparents, and forefathers fought so hard for, and do something with it besides put new rims on a Ford Focus.
Thank you, and good night.
