Okay... Maybe I am behind the times but I actually have never bothered with NOSTALGIA CRITIC. Really. So, I decided tonight to pass the time with some videos. I had posted the Theodore Rex trailer in the my bad trailers thread and the NC video for TR was there on the side. So... I clicked. And clicked again on another video after watching that and so on and so forth...
Now, I will say that there are lots of interesting and thoughtful points made. He indeed nails lots on the head. He's smart and he seems to be interested in the same type of material that many of us all are. And he does indeed have a rich target environment to do his work with (films such as MASTER OF DISGUISE deserve no mercy). But what has come through this mini marathon is one thing: This guy is the muthacussing pure concentrated version of every other internet anal canal that you meet in places like the Hype. He's the patron saint of forum asshats. All the qualities are there...
Oh you know what? I just realized that by doing a snarky critique of the NC with forced humor would be to do EXACTLY what the man and his crew do. And that literally is nothing to joke about. So, I will just say this: He is smart, but has a grating personality and he thinks he's WAY funnier than he actually is by several magnitudes, and that part is what irks the most. You don't get to slam others for committing the exact same crimes. It's what's the matter with NATURAL BORN KILLERS. It's hard to make a satire of the MTV style embraced by a generation when...
DAMN, I did it again! See, that thing, the hip intellectual vibe with the the "I'm as funny as Jon Stewart at his best" so I can get a pass on being shrill and flop sweaty... That's what so many posters do. And it's tiring. Again, just like many of the posters I am thinking of, dude is smart... But he has a limited vocablulary in terms of his approach talking about seemingly anything. In the end it feels, like I said, grating, and dishonest, because you can't really be "that guy" all the time about everything. I feel drained just thinking about it, cuz that personality is what so many online seem to be about and it's a reason that the online experience is what it is for so many of us. So many want to BE this guy or at least a version of that type of fan/general observer of culture. And the truth is I do worry about becoming that guy. I am snarky. I do pride myself on my "smarts" (even though I am an idiot). I do use irony as a lingua franca... But I always try to be aware of that, or at least I have tried since my late 20's to, anyway. But I worry that those personality traits, that demeanor, is the default character for so many of us. It's like, we can't discuss or approach anything without being that way and it's limiting, and as I said, grating, and lacking a sense of limitations, or real appreciation. It's just nit picking and blind cynicism for the most part and it's something leaking into all aspects of culture and it makes things, just that much worse all around in general... Which may not be much. I mean I am just going on about another asshat on the Internet after all. Still... It feels like a symptom of a general lack of self awareness in the culture at large.
My two cents.
