I'm surprised nobody posted this yet.
Long story short, the captain of the cruise ship Costa Concordia *****ed up big time and steers off the programmed route into a coast well-known for underwater rocks. And whaddya know, the ship hits some and sinks. It isn't completely underwater yet, since it's stuck on the rocks and divers are still searching for the missing. 11 have been confirmed dead, with almost 2 dozen still missing.

What's beyond about the whole thing is that not only did the captain directly cause the hit by taking the ship off-course, the crew seemed to be completely unprepared for a disaster. The Italian coast guard only got word of the collision after PASSENGERS called the police complaining about it. The ship didn't seem to have sent a distress signal! Not to mention the captain himself abandoned ship before the passengers evacuated.
Of course this is the icing on the cake - the Coast Guard's call to the captain himself, yelling at him to go back to the ship. With English subtitles. The captain makes excuses like the other lifeboat has stalled its engines, he's coordinating the evacuation from the lifeboat, and that's it's dark. (The Coast Guard's reply to the last one is, "So what do you want to do? It's dark and you want to go home?" ) The Coast Guard knew more about the casualties than the captain himself did.

OMG so much fail, I can't do anything but now but this is just too sad....

Captain: "I am here [in the lifeboat] with the second commander."
Coast Guard: "Excuse me?"
