I'm surprised nobody posted this yet.

Long story short, the captain of the cruise ship Costa Concordia *****ed up big time and steers off the programmed route into a coast well-known for underwater rocks. And whaddya know, the ship hits some and sinks. It isn't completely underwater yet, since it's stuck on the rocks and divers are still searching for the missing. 11 have been confirmed dead, with almost 2 dozen still missing.

What's beyond  about the whole thing is that not only did the captain directly cause the hit by taking the ship off-course, the crew seemed to be completely unprepared for a disaster. The Italian coast guard only got word of the collision after PASSENGERS called the police complaining about it. The ship didn't seem to have sent a distress signal! Not to mention the captain himself abandoned ship before the passengers evacuated.

Of course this is the icing on the cake - the Coast Guard's call to the captain himself, yelling at him to go back to the ship. With English subtitles. :hehe: The captain makes excuses like the other lifeboat has stalled its engines, he's coordinating the evacuation from the lifeboat, and that's it's dark. (The Coast Guard's reply to the last one is, "So what do you want to do? It's dark and you want to go home?" :lmao: ) The Coast Guard knew more about the casualties than the captain himself did.

Captain: "I am here [in the lifeboat] with the second commander."
Coast Guard: "Excuse me?"

OMG so much fail, I can't do anything but :lmao: now but this is just too sad....

Whats with all of these boats crashing lately ?

Although this whole thing is tragic , i completely lost it today when i watched the convo between the captain and the coast guard
Especially considering the fact that the captain was initally saying that he didn't leave the boat.

Yeah, I do find it funny, even though I know I'm not supposed to. Imagine Picard and Riker abandoning ship like that.

Don't worry, I did too. It's completely laughable. "I can't do anything because it's dark." Really? What are you, 5?

Maybe the stereotype of grown Italian men needing their mommies is true after all. :o

Dude, hr has no balls. I thought Captain's took oaths to go down with the ship or be the last ones off the ship?

Hmmmm....shades of Titanic.

I read a bit about this captain, who has had a history of disobeying orders and so this isn't something new. What I don't understand is, how can such an incompetent person ever get to captain another ship after his failures in the past? I hope the colossal mistake and cowardice that this captain displayed after the ship was capsized, not to mention the deaths that his actions have caused, will land him in jail, where he belongs.

Don't worry, just the simple fact of a captain abandoning ship before everyone else is safely off is punishable with a hefty jail sentence.

The captain of this ship was a total screw up.

That is what Star Trek says. The go down with it part at least

You forgot the Kirk amendment: unless you have the chance to get to make it with an exotic alien chick, in that case you're pretty much allowed to sacrifice every person on your ship except for your science officer and your doctor.

Read an article of a husband who gave his life jacket to his wife and didn't make it.

I would laugh, but I believe people died. And i've been on a cruise ship, it would suck to crash. lol

Captain is supposedly getting jailtime for abandoning the ship.

He may as well be Sea Captain from The Simpsons.

People have died, but it's THAT pathetic that you have to laugh at this doofus.

Apparently the captain was on the phone for an HOUR before calling the evacuation order: arguing with the coast guard, executives from the cruise line, and even his MOTHER. Before making any decisions. "Engines and generators completely flooded, what should we do, captain?" No decision. Finally one of the other officers said, "Screw it" and started evacuating people 15 minutes before the captain himself called the official order. It took them over an hour to do it.

If the captain HAD called the evacuation order as soon as they knew the ship had hit something and was taking in water, they could have used all the stinking lifeboats too. Instead, they lost half of them because the ship tilted.

Not only that, people are now saying that the ship should not have sunk like that at all - a ship that big would have watertight compartments in the hull. So the bottom half would have flooded, but the ship would have stayed upright and everyone at least could have gotten on a lifeboat. Instead, the captain's kneejerk maverick reaction was to throw the anchor overboard and turn the ship sharply toward shallower water, tilting the ship and making it take in enough water on one side to fall over and lose half their lifeboats. And his lawyer has the gall to say that move saved lives! Yeah, and people had throw themselves into the water and swim two football fields to shore to save themselves. He could have called the evacuation order immediately and then everyone could have had plenty of time to get on a lifeboat.

People died because of this stupidity. It's :funny: and  and :csad: all at the same time.

I know, really sucks. Hope he gets in some big trouble. What an idiot. Called his mom. lol

OMG. Fresh off the Italian morning press:

Schettino: "I wasn´t trying to flee. I just fell into the lifeboat".

Effing not kidding! http://www.corriere.it/

I :lmao:ed at the reply:
The STONES on that man. It's amazing he could leap so nimbly... o_O

I thought the same thing.

"Yar, I'm in a lot of trouble. Hey, I'll give ya five bucks ta take the blame."

At least Port Authority guy saved the reputations of Italian men everywhere.

What does a pirate accent in Italian sound like?

"Vo-larrrrrrrrrr-eyyy....."
