This thread is to pay tribute to one of the rarest and little-known superhero comics - which is odd, because it's a huge, crazy epic drawn by Jack Kirby. It begins with Apokolips in revolution, and Darkseid and his minions barely escaping. They travel to a forgotten secret base on the moon, where Darkseid begins his plan to turn earth into his new home. He sends his five Seeds of Doom to different places of the world, where they burrow into the earth's core - and once they join up, they will unleash earthquakes and volcanoes, turning the earth into a second Apokalips.
Super Powers, published in 1985, features, in no particular order;
- Superman, Batman & Robin, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Red Tornado, Firestorm and Dr Fate
- Stonehenge, time travel, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table, a dinosaur stampede in New York City, an alien invasion of Easter Island, Emperor Nero, Roman gladiators, and the far future, Darkseid-ruled earth. The final issue is one huge battle between the heroes and Darkseid's minions.
- Superman does some incredible things here, such as flying backwards through time, flying faster than light, and smashing an enemy vehicle to pieces then catching all the debris to throw at the other bad guys. He even has his powers negated by Krytonite manacles, and has to fight a lion in a Roman colosseum. He can speak perfect Latin, and acts as a mentor to the rookie superhero Firestorm.
Though this series was written to sell action figures, and Kirby is no longer at his peak, it is full of bounding energy and imagination, jumping from one awesome concept to the next in a race to fit all it's ideas into six issues. It is wonderful and bizarre to see Batman and Robin involved in Kirby's own brand of magnificent weirdness.
Super Powers isn't available as a graphic novel, which is a huge shame as it's immense fun. It has far more ideas and entertainment than most crossovers in less than half the amount of issues.
