Why would a reacher sequel need to be rated R? They accomplished plenty with a pg13. The action and violence was at a perfect level. There's no reason i can think of to make it gory or intensely violent. Plus the sequel will need all the help it can get, if there is one

The Reacher movies needs to be R rated because of the simple fact that the violence in the book is very graphic and intense.

The Jack Reacher movie definitely toned down the violence to maintain a PG13 rating.

And toning down violence is pretty much the opposite of what Jack Reacher is all about, the same way the handsome and short Cruise is the opposite of the big and scary Reacher.

That's why I said in my review that to have a perfect Reacher movie, it needs to have a big but talented guy as Reacher and the violence and even the language should not be toned down.

The movie was good but it could have been greater if it was truer to the source material.

Pike was big all right. If you've seen it, you already know. :awesome:

Seriously! It was like there was a third actor in the room. Bountiful indeed.

My gripe with the movie isn't Cruise's size, but his age. I thought he did a great job and I've read "One Shot". I believe this has the potential to be a long-term franchise, and I congratulate Cruise for realizing that potential, but how many of these can he make until he turns 60?

I don't agree with that. There were a few moments where I could feel the edits. I'll be shocked if there isn't an unrated cut when it hits DVD.

Given he looks closer to 40 than 50 and keeps himself in good condition there is no reason he couldn't make another 3 and then pass the mantle.

He looked a bit old with his shirt off but other then that, I thought he looked great and was a real convincing badass.

I thought the movie was excellent. Cruise and Pike were both great and have a nice chemistry going. It feels like a good old classic detective film with great action sequences. Don't think there was any CGI. Cruise doing his own stunts make it even more awesome.

I thought it had some great moments filled throughout for sure with Cruise putting in a bit more of a performance than usual. I didn't think it was too special but definitely enjoyable.

I just got back, absolutely loved it! Reacher is such a fantastic character, badass, cool, smart and dryly funny. Cruise just owns the screen, thankfully Rosamund Pike is also very good and spars well with Cruise's Reacher as defense attorney Helen Rodin, as the 2 unravel the mystery.

Ah yes mystery, I love action movies but I've missed the kind of thrillers with just a dollop of action that Eastwood and Ford would star in, Reacher is a return to this and the way he goes about solving the case is both involving and intriguing.

The action there is, is very well shot and very much stripped down, when Reacher fights he is efficient not spectacular. The car chase scene is glorious, as gwyn and DS mentioned the sound design is fantastic for it and the fact Cruise did all the real driving made it as exciting and visceral as the one from Bullit, you are right there with Reacher through every slide and smash.

Herzog as The Zec makes for a memorable villain; cold, brutal and merciless, he is only in two full scenes but he leaves the kind of mark many recent movie villains fall well short of, he's basically the best modern Bond villain.

Jai Courtney shows a lot of presence as The Zec's right hand assassin and gets the most out of his screen time, while Robert Duvall shows his class as an old military sniper who holds a key piece of evidence and helps Reacher out.

I have to give a special mention to the bar scene where the tragic Sandy tries to pick up Reacher as part of a set up, the dialogue both in the bar and outside is fantastic and embodies everything great about Reacher, his subsequent scene with Sandy showing his softer side.

Reacher's off the grid, nomadic lifestyle, observations, detective work and code of justice make him easy to root for and I'm looking forward to a sequel.

9/10

I am really glad you enjoyed it so much Hunter. I agree with everything you said and you are so right about them not making thrillers like this anymore. Such a good time in the theater.

No film in 2012 made me jump as much as the opener of Jack Reacher. So intense and those gunshots are so loud. Probably my favorite Opening scene of the year

I'm going to have to agree with you about the jumping. I jumped when the first gun shot went off. Brilliant sound design all over the film.

how many years have i asked you to read the books?... :cwink:

I saw the movie last week and having read all the books, i can say that Cruise WAS the Reacher i've read all this time. Height is the only problem but honestly, i didnt care about it that much. The movie was awesome and i hope we get a sequel.

Yeah, a big sense of dread with the scope going back and forth around people. The scene were the guy is told to bite off his fingers was similarly tense too. I just thought shoot the guy so I don't have to watch or listen to it. Luckily they did. :funny:

Also caught this last night and I too really enjoyed it. Never read the books before either but I do think I'll pick up Killing Floor tomorrow, if I can find it.

Agreed about Rosamund Pike, her performance and her assets lol!! Couldn't stop oogling at her cleavage! :D

Nice to hear that sequels are already being considered as well. I too hope subsequent films don't receive numbers but appropriate subtitles instead, whichever book the movie gets based on.

Agreed about the car chase too. Yes please to more classic Action movies like this. So clear to see that a great movie can still be made on a smaller budget!!

Highlight of the movie for me was featuring a Mine Site as I work in Mining, but seeing that Robert Duvall was driving a Dump Truck was indeed the icing on the cake - superb performance from him too.

Jack Reacher gets a solid 8/10 for me.

Just saw this. Really enjoyed the movie. The story and characters were great, as was the acting. Fingers crossed that there is a sequel.

Heh! :D

Really glad you enjoyed it man as I know you are a huge fan of the books. Which one do you think would be best for a sequel? I quite like the sound of the one that has flashbacks to a case he investigated when he was an MP and brings some of the MP's he worked with into it.

Yeah thats good, the thing is, i like all the books, i think Tripwire would make a brilliant movie and so too would The Enemy (but that would have to a prequel as it takes place during the collapse of the Berlin wall). Echo burning isnt too bad either.

I'd like to see 61 Hours adapted I love the setting in that one. Bad Luck and Trouble would make a good choice for a third film with him working from people from his army days.

Confession: I have to look up the titles to remember which one is which. I love the series, but Lee Child's titles absolutely will not stick in my head.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting a sequel is unlikely. They're forgetting that this is Tom Cruise though. If he wants a movie made, itll get made. He has enormous pull in Hollywood

The movie did pretty well, if the sequel keeps a similar budget can't see why it won't happen.

^Apparently the movie needs to make $250 million to get a sequel, my question is why? Its made a hefty profit already, more than doubled its budget and made more than its budget domestically. Sounds like very strange logic.

Remember At the Mountains of Madness? The combined commitments of James Cameron and Tom Cruise couldn't get that movie off the ground.

I'm not well versed in Jack Reacher books, so a question to those who are. Was 'One Shot' the best story for a first film to go with?

I thought the movie made a fair profit... kinda surprised they think a sequel won't be made. Maybe because sequels tend to under-perform their predecessors?

Maybe this will be something like the Bourne Identity where the strong DVD sales convince them to make a sequel.
