Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

I guess he did kind of use his smarts to figure out that the private military contractors were dealing in opium to pay back their debts. They first thought it was over stolen weapons being sold to terrorists, instead they were dealing in illegal unauthorized drugs.

Well again, I've said it's not a great film. Plus it misses the great direction and pacing of Chris McQuarrie.

Yeah, definitely. Zwick is a competent journeyman to be sure, but it was an all around dropped ball.

Zwick with his resume is in no way a journeyman. I would say that he's slightly past his peak years as a filmmaker. He'd been wanting to make this type of film for a while though. I think he was originally going to direct American Assassin, but it it looks like they are still using his script if IMDB is correct.

Zwickau has made some really good movies in the past, maybe this genre just isn't suited him. Seeing the movie this week to judge for myself though.

I dont know. I think script was more of the problem than director. I heard movie has biggest problem in that department. Giving Cruise was producer on this film you wonder how he was ok going with the script.

I mean you can't polish the turd. Directing and cinematography and action scenes on other hand were generic and added nothing new to the genre. But they werent bad.

I did think the story and script was off myself and the mystery was no where near as interesting as the original's (I really wish the investigation aspect of the film was better), but the directing was just nowhere near as sure handed, energetic, and tight as the original either, and I usually like Edward Zwick a lot (It didn't even feel like him. it felt like pure director for hire). The fights as well were no where near as intense, as well cut or as well shot as McQuarrie's work, and nothing action wise stood out for me like the car chase in the first movie. It's not bad to me, but I was definitely disappointed.

Never Go Back lost the opening weekend to Madea, but it did have a higher opening weekend than the original.

When you want to make more Mission Impossible sequels, but can't call them that...

It's bombing in China sadly, which is a huge dent in sequel prospects.

Saw it today and enjoyed it, the script is not as sharp and the story is not as tight as the first film, but it's still a decent thriller with some solid action.

Tom Cruise is once again excellent as Reacher and I really liked Cobie Smulder as Major Turner, their dynmaic was a strong focal point for the film.

I also didn't have an issue with the "daughter" plot per se, in that the young actress did well in the role and played off Cruise and Cobie well enough, the issue was it jammed up the pacing a bit, as this was the kind of thing better suited to a 550 page book that's the 18th in a series than a sequel where we are still getting to know who Reacher is.

The action didn't have a stand-out set piece like the car chase in the first movie, but the kitchen fight was pretty great.

All in all a solid entry in the series, I miss these kind of thrillers and Reacher is a great character, so I hope Cruise keeps popping them out as he gets older and the Mission movies are passed on.

7.5/10

Not long got back, I actually enjoyed this more than I was expecting to, I will try and keep this short as HR's review and score are almost exactly the same as mine.

I didn't like the sound of it before seeing the movie, but I actually thought the daughter thing was played pretty well in the end. It added an emotion under current to the story that the first movie lacked. So this was actually an improved aspect over the first movie, one of the few. It also made Reacher a bit more vulnerable than in the first movie where he seemed invincible at times and I liked that a lot. The actress playing the daughter did a good job as well and made you like and sympathise with her despite her doing some naive things.

But the first movie did the rest better. I liked the action we got in the movie, it was pretty well done though it brought nothing new to the genre. The problem was there was no stand out sequence that had your jaw drop like the car chase in the first movie and the under rated finale in the first movie. The action seemed to quick to want to be over half the time. But the kitchen fight was great, and I LOVED how Reacher [BLACKOUT]finally took the bad guy out[/BLACKOUT].

I was also really impressed with Cobie, she actually played a convincing army bad ass and was a good partner for Reacher. Also, she was really, really hot, which always helps :woot:.

But overall, yeah, this was yet another movie this year I have disagreed with the critics on, 7.5/10, I hope we get a 3rd movie.

Wow, that was the first time, in a long time I have left a theater angry...

I watched this yesterday and HOLY HELL i've never been this bored in a movie EVER.
I swear to god, this movie is 2 hours long but it felt like 10. Jesus. Christ.
Lemme say this, i've only watched the first Reacher once, and i really liked that movie, it has some unique action set pieces and Cruise is great playing this sarcastic hardass.
I watched this last night and i cant remember an action scene that sticks out in my mind, and even Tom seems to be bored through most of it, and then there's the whole
daughter thing, that absolutely goes nowhere, and she's just there literally to just get them in trouble and the plot can advance, the girl playing her was actually pretty good though
I liked Cobie Smulders, so thats something, and well i cant really dislike or hate Tom, he puts 100% on his stunts.
There's really nothing i can say about this movie. It exists. So there. Just another generic action movie.
4/10

I only just saw this recently. Disappointed.

To me, it didn't even feel like a sequel to the first, nor did it look anywhere near as good. Not much of a fan of Cobie Smulders and she annoyed the hell out of me. The whole ''daughter or not'' story was garbage too.

I really missed McQuarrie's direction from the first movie.
