Jon Landau Says Avatar 2 Is Four Years Away

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/01/11/jon-landau-says-avatar-2-four-years-away/

According to Landau this morning, the first sequel is “four years away.”

So that’s 2016 by a literal count, though we could be bendy and assume that Christmas 2015 would also be an option. Expect Avatar 3 a year later, as the performance capture and cinematography would take place back-to-back with the second film.

Landau promised that Avatar 2 was going to showcase advanced technology, from the 3D camera system used to the CG and performance capture, but also in terms of a higher framerate. This, he says, is the new frontier that he and Cameron are most interested in pushing. - bleedingcool.com

yeah take time Cameron. why not realese the movie in 2026? who cares about Battle Angel right?

I hope it's sooner than that. What happened to 2014?

In order to release the movie in 2014 , Cameron would need to begin production in 2012 . He's always said hat he wants to shoot AVatar 2 and 3 back to back and given the huge amount of VFX , it would take up to a year to create the shots for one movie . This was the case with the Avatar.

I guess it's a combination of the script not being finished and Cameron also expirimenting to shoot the movie 60 fps.
The fact that WETA is busy with Hobbit in 2012 and 2013 could've also played a role in the movie being delayed.

That's pretty much what I am thinking, I wasn't expecting them to release Avatar 2 in 2014.

I think it's a good move to push it back, but I wish Cameron would resort to doing smaller projects to pass the time.

They could've done it. Hobbit 1 is being released Dec 2012 , Hobbit 2 Dec 2013.
If Cameron finished shooting at the end of 2013 , that would've still given WETA enough time to create all the shots for Avatar 2 .
However WETA has had some pretty big projects such as doing the VFX for Man of STeel.

I do think that once Cameron finishes the script for Avatar 2 and 3 , WETA will again begin a lenghty R&D phase. For Avatar they spent a year trying to figure out how to create the VFX.
Add to that Cameron wants to shoot the movie in 60fps which means a even greater level of realism , i think WETA a big task of upping the ante.

I hope Avatar 2 and 3 don't look like a single movie like with other movies as Matrix 2 and 3, and pirates of the caribbean 2 and 3. And i hope Cameron makes another of his legendary sequels, i can't even imagine a proper reason to make Jack leave Pandora to go to one of it's moons.

I didn't expect Avatar to have a great story, considering James Cameron's other movies i was simply expecting it to have an original sequel, as he was already talking of making one or two before the first was released.

i was reading an interview where the Giant Studio said that right now they can not motion capture under water.

since the filming is around 2 years away i am wondering if they will find a solution. light through water doesnt travel as clear.

^They did a few brief shots under-water in the first film, so they can do it, like when Jake escapes tha creature by jumping off the cliff, when he lands under-water we go under with him for a moment.

that was not motion captured .they used footage reference and it was weta animated

if anyone can make underwater motion capture it'll be James Cameron

Underwater Mo-Cap is possible

The problem is just designing a system that is practical enough for the filmmakers.

Yeah this is something Cameron can get it to work for Avatar 2 and 3.

In Cameron We Trust. :oldrazz:

I sincerely hope Cameron is focusing on his script alot more than his SFX because the 2009 script was mediocre. I was astonished by the SFX -- mystic, legendary. Yet, the arc, was just dull and recycled garbage.

What is dull and recycled garbage is bashing Avatar.

I calls them like sees them.

This isn't the Twilight Thread. I can criticize any aspect of the film I disliked, and guess what? I thought the script was incredibly weak. I'm being honest.

With the sequel now possibly taking place on a new planet, I'm hoping Cameron doesn't skip out on a decent script and focus purely on SFX.

Cameron Rejects Hollywood; Avatar 2 To Film In New Zealand

2 February 2012 12:46 PM, PST

Wairarapa, New Zealand
While James Cameron shot much of his Oscar-winning Avatar in U.S. locations, such as Kauai and the Big Island in Hawaii and the converted aircraft assembly plant in Playa Vista, CA where Howard Hughes built the Spruce Goose, many scenes were also shot at Stone Street Studios in Wellington, New Zealand, and virtually all of the special effects work was performed there at the famed Weta digital effects studio, cofounded by Peter Jackson. Now, it appears that New Zealand will be the home base for Cameron’s sequel to Avatar. Published reports said today (Thursday) that Cameron has applied to buy 2,636 acres of farmland where he and his family “intend to reside indefinitely.” In a statement, the Cameron family said, “We love the rugged landscape and the spirit of the people here, and are looking forward to becoming resident on our beautiful farm. We hope we will be accepted as good neighbours and good members of the community in South Wairarapa.”»
