Horror James Wan's "The Conjuring"

This was without a doubt my favorite horror film from the past couple of years. The nun was terrifying. Crooked man was AWESOME!!!! I have no doubt the movements were done by an actor, but wonder if they put CGI over him, there was a cartoon-like look to him outside of the movement or that was just really well done costuming. Overall, 10/10 from me. This is my kind of horror movie. Gonna see it again soon without a doubt!

He was also in Rec, and had weird movements. It's all him if I'm not mistaken.

Was the Nun related to the Amityville case in the film or was it tied to something else?

My guess is that the nun and her children were one of Valak's earlier victims - the interesting thing to see would be, what's their take on how far of a reach Valak has? Will it be contained to the UK?

Lorraine didn't see "Valak" until Enfield - everything she saw was part of her vision:

1) Valak's form as a nun
2) The chairs being thrown
3) The basement where Ed would get trapped
3) What would be on the TV before Ed was to die
4) The way Ed may have died.

Lorraine seeing "Valak" at Amityville, was a premonition - just like it was in her house and just like it was years prior at the exorcism.

yeah I'm not even looking forward to it.

I don't mind them doing all the trashy spin-offs they want, as long as the main Conjuring film series keeps the high quality.

Wasn't the whole point of The Nun is that it was just a form to make Lorraine question her religion?

Yes. But also Valack takes on forms important to individuals. For example, with the boy it took on the form of the Crooked Man - it got that form from his toy. With Janet it took on the form of an old man - that form was readily supplied to him because that man lived in the house. Thus, it seems natural that it similarly got the form of a nun through a similar means.

With that said although the nun scared me, I would have loved to see a spin-off with the Crooked Man more. I just lit up, smiling whenever I saw that character. It was like a really disturbing, screwed up character from a dark children's book. They could have done a really interesting boogeyman take on that, less on character study - more on a drugged out Dr. Seuss type presentation (which would differentiate it from Babadook). That was like a wicked Cat In The Hat.

FFS. No one thinks these spinoffs are scary.

People were a lot more scared of the Nun than Annabelle. We shouldn't write off all these spin offs just because Annabelle was a dud.

Annabelle 2 is by the Lights Out director though which is getting great reviews

Annabelle 2 could turn out great, it all depends on who the get to direct this Nun thing

I'd rather see a crooked man spin-off. The nun wasn't very interesting

I definitely want a Crooked Man spinoff. Directed by the person that did Babadook.

I'd want it directed by Tim Burton or someone with a darkly whimsical sensibility. Babadook was basically the Crooked Man, just a different approach at a similar subject.

I don't think a Crooked Man spin-off would be a good idea. Most of the reviews that were negative point that out as being the part that jumped the shark for them. Also, the Nun was much scarier, so, it makes more sense to go with that.

Just got back from seeing this. Another great entry. I love Wilson and Vera in the roles so much. The little girl playing Janet was fantastic. I could watch a million of these as long as Wilson and Vera are around. They make them imo.

They can easily make this a Showtime or HBO show if they wanted to... Kinda like Penny Dreadful.

Interesting. Though as I said above, there's a decent amount of evidence to suggest the Warrens themselves are hoaxes in real life, and that they were part of the group that fabricated Amytiville, so criticising a film for not being based off of a "true" case is somewhat suspect.

It was never proven that the Amityville case was a hoax though?

The Lutz's even on their deathbed maintained they were truthful and that it wasn't a hoax, as well as passing a lie detector test(I know a person can fake a lie detector), and while there will always be speculation as to whether or not it happened. I have to say that I believe Amityville was very real and the claims themselves are creepy, ridiculous, and outlandish as a whole that they were risking massive ridicule by making their experiences known to the public.

They're very likeable and charming in tropes I would normally roll my eyes at (married Catholics win against evil).

I couldn't help but note how fierce Janet looked during the final confrontation with the demon lol.

The part of that that I don't know how anyone could ever dismiss about Amityville... If something wasn't up, how can you even begin to explain the Dafeo murder case where family members were getting murdered, they all staid asleep, and face down in their beds. Plus it wasn't a silencer. They would have heard it.
