Who is the best emcee out of the two overall

Jay has stayed on point while Eminem has fallen off so I see why many would currently give it to Jay, but in Eminem's prime and Jay Z's prime's Eminem bvy far was the superior emcee and has NEVER talked about collateral and how more dominant he is as a rich, made man. Eminem has some GREAT music and singles, so has Jay z so with both their underground stuff and their mainstream stuff, who would you give that title to???

Oh man... *awaits the slew of rap sucks comments*.

I'll stick with classic Eminem. As much as I hate what he's evolved into and how little true hip hop there is out there right now, a lot of his old rhyme still astound me. He was really on a different level. Jay is nice sometimes but has never, ever really floored me with his lyrics. I personally feel that he got destroyed by Nas... but that's just me.

Neither of them add anything of value to any musical genre, and therefore, one of them cannot be 'best' at something which they don't really contribute to.

Yes, as you can tell, I don't consider rap/hip-hop/anything involving more 'yeahs', 'uhs', and 'yo's' than actual singing to be music. Which means, a heck of a lot of stuff that's 'popular' right now.

I see that knowsbleed has the gift of foresight .

It's a shame that you're so close minded on the subject.

Anyway, I'm not a big Jay-Z fan. A lot of his songs sound the same and only a small number of them have any replay value for me. Not to mention the fact that who knows which lines he wrote or which lines he paid for.

Eminem however, in his heyday, was a beast. Classic after classic in my opinion. A lot of his best songs have so much more to them then the "yeah" and "uhs" that Alexia believes all rap is. He's a great story teller and when he's on fire, his rhymes can't be touched.

I think Jay needs to stop making music, and I hope Em has some fire left in him.

He did get destroyed by Nas...badly

You don't need to comment here. Music is what it is. I agree that Hip Hop today is not to be proud of but you can not speak on something you don't understand.

JayZ's old stuff pwns any of Eminem's stuff. 'Nuff said.

You said it perfectly. Eminem is one of the best and greatest lyricists of ALL time period. The guy has got song on the level of Michael Jackson, Beatles and even Bob Marley, but Eminem does it in his own comical way. I knew he had more in him then slapstick when I heard Eminem Show which had his most substance. Mosh was GREAT too for the subject matter was grimey. He was a beats. Jay also has some great mental consepts but nowhere on the level of Em. Jay isn't really the best story teller. He also doesn't really have any one thing that I'd say he takes with no competition.

LOL, not one verse form Jay can EVER touch Eminem's lyrics on the track Infinite, and Em proved he can ish on Jay on his OWN album. Jay talks collateral, Eminem talks about himself and his personal pains and jokes about them. Jay Z is not really much different then any other rapper. he just does what they do to a better level, but still the same where as Eminem and Joe Budden are probably the only rappers I know to give us that much of themselves in their lyrics.

I vaguely remember approving of his actual story-telling skills in 8 Mile (the part in which he tells his life's story, admitting his faults and such, during the competition). However, I believe that lyrics are one of two things: meant to be sung, or meant to be poetry. Rap clearly isn't sung, and much of it is too... basic to be worthy of being called 'poetry'. I have seen some decent rap/hip-hop song lyrics, but the way in which they're presented just instinctually sickens me.

For the past few years, rap and hiphop have been almost everything I've heard whenever I turn on my tv or listen to the radio. I'm sure I've heard enough to form my own opinion, thanks. If the situation were reversed, and all that currently played in popular media were current Broadway songs, and you didn't like them, I would consider your opinion valid.

You have to study something to judge it. I used to judge reggae in that same ignorant manner until I actually listened to it. Same goes for country music which all sounds the same but they damn sure can write lyrics. I give chance to every angle of a genre before i cancel out an entire genre of music.

You ever heard of Rakim? Slick Rick? Lauren Hill? The Fugees? Common? Lupe Fiasco?...go listen to them and tell me what you think, but you may just not like it. Rap is not singing and as a matter of fact a LOTT of it is poetry. Just because they don't speak of meadows, and green pastures or use thou and thy a lot...it it peotry on a who nother level. You must not have heard Nas, Illmatic. Hip hop was born as a voice for the negro community who had no voice but caucasian domination on radio waves with THEIR culture everywhere till blacks started their own form of revolutionary music that has been disrespected by this non elevated new gen, but hey...It is a very important form of art if you truly give it time to CARE.

Now that is poetry...don't see how one could even argue that AT ALL!!!

and rap is all about lyrics too and a form of elevating to a better place of mind and spirit. it was revolution music.

First half would make for some interesting teen-angst poetry. Second half I could care less about.

Flow being... what, exactly? Tempo? I'd love me some coloratura rap.

Eminem has and always will suck.

They both suck...But I'm going to give it to Eminem, for writing a song about raping nuns. That's pretty awesome.

ok so I guess your another ignorant rap hater cause though you may not like Eminem...He is FAR from sucking.

A rapper doesn't mean you're rude, and in peoples face, and obnoxious, and make little puppet fetish videos about teenagers having sex and "rapping" with an annoying high pitched voice. Rap is poetry. I don't like Jay-Z's new stuff or any of Eminem's stuff, but when it comes down to overall, Jay-Z's old music was actually pretty good. Either way, they're both Commercial Rappers and need to stop releasing crap.

Dude, I was born and raised in the Bronx. Live in Harlem right now. I doubt I'd still be alive if I was an 'ignorant rap hater'.

You asked a question and I gave you my answer. Em sucks. Deal with it.

I'll bite. Here's some poetry for you... forgive the initial "yo".

Common from Respiration said:
Yo...on the amen, corner I stood lookin at my former hood
Felt the spirit in the wind, knew my friend was gone for good
Threw dirt on the casket, the hurt, I couldn't mask it
Mixing down emotions, struggle I hadn't mastered
I choreograph seven steps to heaven
And hell, waiting to exhale and make the bread leavened
Veteran of a cold war its chica-i-go for
What I know or, whats known
So some days I take the bus home, just to touch home
From the crib I spend months gone
Sat by the window with a clutched dome listening to shorties cuss long
Young girls with weak minds, but they butt strong
Tried to call, or at least beep the lord, but didn't have a touch-tone
Its a dog-eat-dog world, you gotta mush on
Some of this land I must own
Outta the city, they want us gone
Tearing down the projects creating plush homes
My circumstance is between cabrini and love jones
Surrounded by hate, yet I love home
Ask my God how he thought traveling the world sound
Found it hard to imagine he hadn't been past downtown
Its deep, I heard the city breathe in its sleep
Of reality I touch, but for me its hard to keep
Deep, I heard my man breathe in his sleep
Of reality I touch, but for me its hard to keep
