BvS Jesse Eisenberg IS Lex Luthor - Part 10

Yeah, where was it confirmed that they changed the character after they cast Eisenberg? And as far as the original script featuring a more "classic" Lex or whatever... this Lex apparently has genuis-level intelligence, has a hugely successful tech corporation, has a wildly charismatic and popular persona that masks his true devious nature, sees himself as a hero despite doing questionable and even terrible things, and eventually loses his red hair to go completely bald. Sounds pretty classic to me. Other stuff (his age, his casual dress, styling Lexcorp after companies like Google instead of Goldman Sachs or whatever) doesn't change the core of the character.

I thought Goyer's version had Lex as a gangbanger with the Metropolis skyline tattooed on his body.

That was a rumor. It may have been true but I think you-know-who was the one who reported it.

I believe the Total Film article mentioned they tweaked the script to fit Eisenberg's Lex. Originally, they weren't looking at him for Lex but for a different role. If I remember correctly.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was him, which tells us all we need to know about that rumor.

Yup. It seems most people have forgotten about this? I remember reading that in one of the scans posted from some magazine, not too long ago. I can't find the article, but I remember they were saying something "the production was looking at the usual suspects (for the role of Lex) but when Snyder met with Eisenberg (who was auditioning for a different part) the director couldn't resist casting him as Lex Luthor..." Something like that :oldrazz: Look it up people :o

EDIT: I don't recall if they mention specifically changing the script for Eisenberg though.

Y'all need to do some reading.

From Total Film December issue:
...in a wildly leftfield piece of casting, Jesse Eisenberg as the most famous villain in the Superman canon, Lex Luthor (see above, re. general furore when a spot of unexpected casting is announced). Snyder initially met Eisenberg for another part, having been previously discussing “the usual suspects that you’d imagine for Lex.” But after meeting The Social Network actor, he couldn’t shake the idea of casting him as the big bad, and screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo) tweaked the screenplay to suit the 32-year-old. Eisenberg himself might not have been best placed to realise how far his casting would have differed from the expected interpretation of the character; he freely concedes that “the phenomenon of comic books completely passed me by... I’ve seen none of the movies.
They definitely had a traditional, business-suit Lex in the original script with intention to cast an older actor (Joaquin Phoenix was one such person) and I'm positive that this was one of stuffs developed by Goyer.

Ah, nice. I was too lazy to find and post it myself.

Ah, well. I wonder what part he originally read for.

I keep thinking they would have wanted him for The Flash, but I'm not sure if they were already in the process of casting for that part when Eisenberg came into the picture (literally).

I'm willing to bet anything that he was up for Scoot McNairy's part.

So, Leggy McLegs.

any news today on what eisenberg thinks of chris terrio? :o

Ah, well. I wonder what part he originally read for.
I would suspect that they discarded this part.

Otherwise, I have no idea because actor of Eisenberg's calibre is not going to do bit part. I would guess maybe he was originally going for Callan Mulvey or Scoot McNairy's role?

have we ever seen any set pics of callan mulvey or shots of him in the trailers? i forgot he was even in this film

Nope. His role must be either:

- A really small one.

- A really well hidden one.

- Completely CGI one.

There were rumors that Callan Mulvey and Amy Adams were both shooting a scene at this location.

But in the trailer we can see that this is the place where Batman branded someone.

There were also rumors that this place is Wayne Manor. :p

If that is Wayne Manor then what is this guy doing in there.

Just hanging. :o

Anyway, my point was that there was plenty of silly rumors about that house, so I wouldn't believe in Adams and Mulvey one. :cwink:

I wouldn't be surprised if Jesse was first contacted for the role of Jimmy Olsen.

With trailers cut the way they are, who knows where that guy actually is. If we believe the trailer construction, Superman tries to incinerate Batman, which I HIGHLY doubt actually goes down in the film.

Definitely possible. I just really don't trust studio spin, especially where the casting process/recasting is considered.

Remember how James Gunn insisted Dave Bautista was the first choice for Drax? When we know Jason Momoa was, and Marvel lowballed him?

Knowing Joaquin Phoenix's onscreen persona, I doubt Luthor was ever the throwback corporate magnate of John Byrne's run. It seems like the quirky tech guy thing has been in play for a while. Terrio definitely worked with Eisenberg at least to refine the dialogue to match his signature style, though. Eisenberg talks about that quite a bit in discussing the movie.
