I think the intention was to make us LOL, but all any of us did was laugh uncomfortably... which soon, upon rewatching, just makes us cringe.

What were they thinking doing that?

I don't think the intention was to be funny at all. I thought he did it as a way of displaying his dominance and crossing social norms like personal boundaries. He basically treated that grown man like a dog. I guess if he patted him on the head and said good boy it would be more obvious.
