Joe Quesada Has Crossed The Line With The Smoking Ban

I think it's arbitrary and kind of ridiculous, but I can't fault Quesada for having personal craziness over tobacco products after his dad died of lung cancer.

I agree... and I also think that hexagons are superior to squares.

:yay:

No, Hans is making it a big deal. I read that issue, and didn't think once of Marvel's "ban." You know, sometimes the jokes are just jokes...

How did you not think of it once? Anyone who knows Marvel and Quesada would've picked up on the relevance to the ban the second you see the old man smoking in ASM.

I can't blame Quesada for putting smoking down, as I can't stand it either...but at the same time, I feel like he could address it a little differently. Informing everyone that smoking causes lung cancer through speech bubbles full of 'kaff kaff', with an accompanying info box seems a little bit odd to me. I already know that stuff, and I don't want patronising comics :csad:

Hm, I didn't even notice that Marvel characters had stopped smoking. Sounds good to me

I think Quesada should do less special issues warning people about the dangers of smoking and more special issues warning people about the dangers of internet forum threads complaining about his special issues warning people about the dangers of smoking.

I mean I'm just saying I just finished reading this thread? And I'm pretty sure I have cancer now.

Honestly, I've been reading a decent amount of Marvel, and I knew nothing of this ban or of Quesada's implementation of it. As far as ASM went, I felt that it was good characterization to have this old man coughing. Yes, I related coughing to smoking, but it's good "acting" in comics, and that far out-ways the fact that it has some sort of message. I mean, the fact that the villains tend to lose is also a message, that Spider-man must live, even when we could guess that he should probalby be dead probably deals with an editorial mandate. The fact that most heroes are not noticeably killing their villains (with a few exceptions) is a message and a mandate. These things occur in comics.

My final point is that Joe Quesada predicted well-- when a book goes well, Dan Slott is a terrific writer, Mark Millar's Ultimate's was amazing, Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-men, so on it goes. But when a creditied writer writes something about smoking that someone doesn't like, it's Joe Quesada's ban on smoking. So what if he put a tiny sticky in there? There is no real reason to assume it was his scene.

And it was most likely coincidence that we had two books deal with smoking in one week.

Because, believe it or not, I pick up the comic to actually read the comic. I could really give two craps about all the behind the scenes politics being *****ed about on here. It's a shame that so many people let it ruin comics for them.

Seriously, is it THAT big a deal? People hate smokers. Everytime I light up, I see the look. You know that "Eww smoking is gross, I can't believe people still smoke" look. We shouldn't smoke. It's gross, it stinks, and it's too expensive. You know it. I know it. You feel insulted when Marvel says "smoking is bad for you"? Let it go, dude.

Surprisingly enough, I pick up comics and read them too..
But seriously, you couldn't give a crap about the 'politics' happening behind the scenes in comics, yet you post on a thread concerning Quesada's ban?

I'm just interested in the stuff like that, but it don't ruin my comics.

Hmm... this is a fine debate indeed. One one hand smoking is bad and kills and we've all seen the first scene of Clerks. On the other hand, it's just soooooo cool.

Its all Jim Lee's fault lol. He drew everybody with a cigarette in their mouths. :woot:

We joke about things like that, but it probably does influence people. Does it make them do stuff? Does it smoke the cigarettes for them? No. But it may make the thought of smoking present when it hadn't been there before. So, in many ways, I'm glad he took a stand on smoking. Now does that mean I never want to see Tony holding a glass of his preferred beverage? No, but I think those things are slightly different.

As I write this, MGS4 is installing and Snake is enjoying a cigarette (Big Boss did cigars) while the game flashes messgages like "play in a well lit room, sit far from TV yada yad." But then again, MGS was one of the first Sony games to break Sony's ban on smoking.

Spider-Man traded his marriage to Satan AND Wolverine has quit smoking?

Oh, you are SO going down, Joeyboy. You are so going down.

You see, that's one thing that's awful. His priorities. It's a'okay to show everyone's favourite hero making a deal with Satan, yet smoking is bad, very bad. So kids, whenever you feel stressed out and want your problems to be rid of, call up Satan. Don't do cigarettes, that's immoral.

Hans, do you smoke?

Not anymore. What does that have to do with forced mandates and bad writing, though?

It's not the smoking ban that this thread is about. If you read the first post, you'd see that it's the practice of telling stories that revolve around making tobacco uncool that I take issue with. I don't need or want to spend $3-4 on a PSA. Maybe you don't mind, but I do.

If Marvel wants to have entire stories dedicated to drugs, alcohol, tobacco or whatever else they want to steer kids away from, they can do it in their books that are specifically aimed at children. The Marvel Adventures line would be a perfect place for that. Not uber-gory X-Force.

I don't know what's in 'em, I just know I can't quit smokin' 'em!

I bought the Xforce issue, filled it with delicious pot and smoked the hell out of it. It was awesome.

Yeah, going down to the bank, to cash his fat ****ing paychecks.

I'd like to laugh but I can't help thinking how that glossy comic paper would totally harsh a good buzz.

The smoke ban is just like "No R-rated Marvel" films. Never say never. Its just a silly rule that doesnt really do anything. They act like if it isnt prohibited, all characters would just smoke.

The MPAA started taking smoking into consideration for the rating system as well.
