JOHN CENA to kick ass and chew bubble-gum in DUKE NUKEM

I don't think a Duke Nukem movie can work in this era. Even in 2011, people were pooping on it.

Cobra Kai IMHO one of the most overrated shows in existence. The acting and writing are awful.

It’s wonderful to have an update on this. I’ve frequently thought about it and wanted to bump the thread but I didn’t want to be a pain if there’s no new info

Not played a DN game in years.

I wonder if Cena is still attached.

I doubt it. Cena was attached when it was the Platinum Dunes people and different producers. Looks like the rights have now changed hands.

Also, Cena probably wouldn't want to do this because it would be a lot like playing Peacemaker again.

If they really do it, I don't think it can work unless they make it a really self-effacing, tongue-in-cheek, almost campy parody.

Like you have to play up how insensitive and out-of-date Duke is as a character and his material doesn't fly today. Otherwise I don't think audiences will accept it. Like you'd have to Rick and Morty it almost.

He just had good practice playing Peacemaker. I think if they the route u described Cena is perfect

Cena is no longer attached to this project. He was the desired star when it was in the hands of Platinum Dunes. Also, since that happened he got the Peacemaker role. Basically a very similar character, except without the introspection.

Thsts what i get for believing Twitter

I couldn’t see the project working with anyone else other than Cena.

intrigued by the idea of a hilarious take

Maybe Thor bod Chris Hemsworth, but I doubt he'd want to do this after playing Thor again.

Or Alan Ritchson, but he's playing Jack Reacher.

But who is going to want to play the embodiment of 1990s toxic masculinity?

Dye his hair blonde.

Lol, not in a million lightyears would Evans take this role.

If they're playing it up as a satire then Evans would actually be perfect but man it'd have to be an amazing script to even have him look at it.

I mean, he took on cap which was definitely a risky role back in the day.

sorry I misread the original question. I thought the question was, who would be like an archetype of the 90s video game version that John Cena’s Duke would grind up against

Yes, Captain America. Respectful. Valiant. Gentleman. Brave. Noble. Struggling to find his place in a world as a man out of time.

Duke Nukem is basically the embodiment of the 1980s ultra-machismo, high testosterone action hero. It's definitely riffing on that archetype, but there's very little in the way of introspection for Duke Nukem. The video games don't have character development or introspection. It's just Duke Nukem killing aliens, saving hot babes, and killing more aliens. In other words, Duke Nukem is basically toxic masculinity personified.

Sure you could probably do what Peacemaker did with the character, and maybe that might work. But I'm still not sure Chris Evans would go for that, when he already seems to be very specific about what roles he takes at this point. I don't think Cena is going to bite on this either now that he's going to continue playing Peacemaker.

Just to put things in perspective, the last time there was a successful Duke Nukem game, Bill Clinton was still President of the United States.

Yeah...I don't think that's a good idea, but maybe it's going to be more of a satire. That said, I don't think you can make Duke Nukem work in the 2020s.

At least there’s some news finally.

Would it still be live action and with cena? If it’s animated they might be recast so it’s cena not heard

They haven't said what it will be yet other than this:

What do you have coming next?

I got video games in production. Obviously more Devil May Cry. I'm being approached with different IPs and companies that want to work with me. I bought the rights to Duke Nukem. Not the gaming rights, but I bought it from Gearbox.

What's your vision for Duke Nukem?

It's a middle finger to everybody. When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it's just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can't be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it's no longer Duke Nukem. I don't intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.

What in this *******'s filmography suggests he understands satire.
