Both roles would be too small for him.

That really depends on the story they tell. S'Yan could potentially have a major role in the franchise going forward as T'Challa's primary advisor and father figure.

Denzel is also not a sequel guy, so no.

You don't know if you never try. If that was the Russo's attitude they wouldn't have signed Robert Redford.

Besides that we don't know how big those roles will be.

I love how the poll is narrowed down to "Denzel Washington" or "someone else." That's how perfect Denzel would be for the part, it's hard to even put someone else on the shortlist.

Ejiofor is older than Boseman by about three years.
Boseman's birth date was 1982. There's a misunderstanding.
Nope. He graduated high school in 1995. There are newspaper clippings, etc. on the other thread from his basketball team. Unless he was both a Doogie Howser-esque child prodigy and looked fully grown when he was 12, the 1976 birth year is accurate.

Many actors (and actresses, more so) fudge their birth dates a bit so that casting directors and such don't consider them too old for a particular part. Doesn't matter though. Boseman can convincingly play late 20's/early 30's... which is all that should matter.

lol Anthony Hopkins is doing Thor.
Anthony Hopkins has always done a variety of roles, he isn't as selective as Denzel Washington.

Having said that, I'm not seeing what makes Denzel so essentially perfect for the part, other than being a critically-acclaimed black actor.

Hey, I'm going by his film history. His film history indicates that he doesn't due sequels and he hasn't done a very minor role in a very long time

Denzel has said he doesn't like doing franchise pictures because he's wary of sequels. But then again it's doubtful T'Chaka is gonna be a recurring character in the MCU since the most notable thing about him is the fact that he died.

I'm not sure I would characterize T'Chaka as a very minor role though. In terms of screen-time, maybe less than what Denzel has typically done in the past, but way up there in terms of impact.

I mean, on the subject of Anthony Hopkins, he was on screen for something like 15 minutes in Silence Of The Lambs. Bagged a Best Actor Oscar and literally started a cultural phenomenon. Not that I'm comparing T'Chaka to Hannibal Lector in terms of cultural significance, but a well written, really heavy hitting part might just draw Denzel in. And if not... no biggie. There are plenty of excellent candidates out there.

Can some of my Wire-obsessed brethren chime in on Michael K Williams? He has the look, the gravitas, is monumentally badass, is the right age and has near unparalleled acting chops. And I haven't even gone into his Boardwalk Empire work... Chalky White might not be as iconic a character as Omar, but was equally well portrayed by Wililams.

Not Denzel.
Don't know who, but not Denzel.

How about Giancarlo Esposito?

Hounsou should get another crack at a more meaty role. He was wasted in Guardians of the Galaxy even though his character was pretty cool.

The funny thing is Ejiofor is younger than Boseman.

Which is too bad because he was my first though before age even entered my mind. I mean, he made such a great Othello, and to be honest once I've fallen for your Shakespeare I'm pretty much doomed.

I wonder now was the little Iron Man 2 Easter Egg with S.H.I.E.L.D. aware of a superhuman in Africa a nod to T'Chaka and not his son?

I agree, I don't think Denzel would do it. If you look at his filmography since he became a big name actor, it's not the type of role he would do. He would want the role to be rapidly expanded, fighting alongside Boseman throughout the movie until dying in the third act. He won't do a role that is basically a few minutes at the start of the movie.

My top pick is Forrest Whitaker.

However, Denzel as Moses Magnum would be interesting. He'd have top billing over Serkis due to his name.

Forrest Whitaker is perfect, as is Denzel's Moses Magnum.

About denzel, if someone had said Robert Redford would be doing a marvel movie a few years ago I would have said nah, he'll think its beneath him so never say never

Are we sure that T'Chaka is even going to be in the film? I may be misremembering this, but didn't Feige say "no more origins" when it comes to future Marvel films? And with Boseman set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, do we really think he's going to just be Prince T'Challa in that film? What if he's already the Black Panther as the film begins? In that case, would T'Chaka (and maybe his death at Klaw's hands) be relegated to a brief appearance in Age of Ultron?

I really doubt the "no more origins" thing is true. Plus, Feige described T'Challa at the press event as someone who is "a bit of a prince, who may become a bit of a king."
I highly doubt they would show his origin in AoU and not his own movie.

Giancarlo is awesome, met him at the House of Blues once..realy nice guy.

Only thing is he's pretty smallish guy. I'm barely 5-9 and i was at least an inch taller than him. I've always pictures T'Chaka as a tall statuesque type, but i have no problem if Esposito is cast.
