From the info we have, the scarring is most probably a gash which result of the zipline snapping at Joker's face when Batman throws a batarang at it. The Chicago filming footage also confirms the zipline getaway.

Any word on how he acquires the white of his face? Is that just makeup he will be applying? I hope not.

Batman has looked similar but different in each of the live action films. yes, in all he's had a solid black rubber (was it made of rubber in BB? i can't remember) suit in each, but there has been differences. there's only so much you can do with a bat-suit. there's much more you can change/alter in the outfits of the bad guys, look at Burton's Penguin and Catwoman, Nolan's Scarecrow and Ra's, and, sadly, Schumaker's Mr Freeze, Riddler, Poison Ivy, and Two-Face. the villains are more based upon certain motifs than one singular look in the adaptation process.

i never said it was perfect, but i did say it was different. if Ledger showed up looking like every other live action version of Joker, i'd be pissed. i've seen that already. i want to see him performed differently. i want to see him look different.

Joker isn't tied down to just the purple suit really. he needs the crazy smile, and just because Ledger isn't smiling in this one dark, blurry image doesn't mean he won't smile in the movie. he needs green hair, dark sunken eyes, and red lips. the normal foundations for the character are all there.

it's just different from the norm. and that sends most fanboys into dizzying heights of overreaction.

wow my fav's list is quickly growing on these boards haha
I agree 100 %.
lets not forget that the batsuit is also supposed to make a slight chnage in this next film.
So yes, to add to that, batman has been portrayed different many times because the suit is different in every movie.

i got worried when he cast ledger for the part... but still trusted him... now seeing that... its crap... complete crap... im a fan of the source media first, if the film doesnt please me as a fan of that, i lose respect... something as iconic as the joker, blundered like this? ya, im pissed to say the least... no one needs fans like you that will see something that is a complete misstep and utter ef-up because "looks cool and different"

its idiot fans like you that made people like brian singer think it was ok to ef up superman and remake S:tm rather than grow some balls and stick to the source material in creative way instead copying some crappy seventies movie

Dog, what's wrong with you?
If you can't act civilized, accept what is done, or respect other's opinions, then this is what you need to do:

The chemical bath story..........is the story, I don't think it looks at all like the arkham asylum joker, and we don't know that there is no chemical bath in the movie.

Fanboy mentality is always the same. Like in the build-up to "Batman Begins"...

Batman is too young and not American THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUCK!
What the hell The Tumbler!?!?! THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUCK!
Too many British people THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUUUCK!
Batman outfit is like Schumacher films THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUCK!
Katie Holmes playing a character not in the comics THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUCK!
The Scarecrow played by someone in his 20s THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUCK!
The Scarecrow not wearing an actual Scarecrow outfit THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUCK!
Ra's Al Ghul is ASIAN THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUUUCK!
Even worse Ra's al Ghul is DUCARD THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUCK!

But of course, the movie didn't suck. "Batman Begins" surprised a lot of people, and turned out to be a fantastic masterpiece of a film, not just a great comic book film, but a great film by the standards of any genre. And the fanboys were won over:

Oh! So genius! Nolan is a genius! Best movie ever! I have faith in Nolan for the sequel! IN NOLAN WE TRUST!

In Nolan we trust...until he does one thing you don't like.

I don't like how The Joker looks THIS MOVIES GONNA SUUUUUCK!

You know what they say, the more things change...

ahahah pretty funny. but you have to understand that people like to speculate. the hype would be no fun if every development received a 100% approval rating.

ok, so you think S:TM is just a crappy 70s movie? wow....you do realize that at the time it was made it was completely true to the comic books? no? well...that sucks. you're wrong about the fans being responsible for Singer remaking S:TM for SR, that was his own decision. and WB's for allowing him to do it. the fans actually had a bit of a backlash to him doing it. oh, that and the kid and making Superman a borderline stalker. none of that was the fans doing.

and, you want a too the letter Joker? go watch an older Batman movie or cartoon. he's there. you're the kind of fan that gives us a bad name. you can't understand or accept the fact that although the outer appearance may change, if the essence of the character is still there, it doesn't matter much. these characters have had decades of interpretations, i would hate if Nolan didn't make his vision of the Joker his own and just regurgitated one from either an old version, or just the comic book.

this is problem fans like you have with the word "adaptation." you don't seem to understand what it means.

I find it funny how so many people were against the cut smile, until of course they realised that that's what they're getting in TDK, now the cut smile is the balls? Something not quite right there I think

Not impressed. But i'll wait until i see more over the coming months before i make a final judgement.

I hope fo it to be Makeup to increase the "bleachness" of the skin...

I gave it a 7.

It's not perfect, and not really what I wanted at all. But the potential for greatness is there. This good be the best version of the Joker we've seen on the screen yet. Heath could be great, and this look could really work amazingly well. Here's to hoping it does.

But even so, basing everything on this ONE picture, I have to give it a 7. I'm just not that impressed, with the look. What I am is a bit disgusted. Joker that smile/gash is gross, and I am CONFIDENT that Nolan will pull it off in the greatest possible way.

I believe in Nolan.

If you reply (only once, I tried twice :P ), it'll automatically reply with:

Thank you very much.

I love the way they are marketing this film, still disappointed by Joker's appearance though. Still, hopefully he'll look better in a full shot.

Somethings GOTTA happen once all the pixels are filled, I just dont know what.

No, I still hate it. Bad, bad, bad idea. Just unimaginative. Distracting. Utter sh**e to be honest. What's even worse is the smeared lipstick - that just looks SO bad.

man joker looks wicked, hope its a dark version of the joker, tells jokes once in a while but is so damn evil!!

THANK YOU !!
its a doomed circle of never-ending *****ing with ppl who want change, bt then cant handel it.
DONT ASK FOR WHAT YOU ARNT PREPARED FOR !

JOKER RULES !!!

I've said I was against the IDEA of the cut smile. As in, it's not something I would do. But Nolan IS doing it, and in PRACTISE, it looks pretty damn good.

Many of the flaws with the look come from the basis of fidelity to the comics. Looking at this as a standalone picture of The Joker - terrifying nemesis of Batman - in the sequel to Nolan's "Batman Begins", it's effectiveness cannot be denied. That is one scary SOB.

Not entirely sure to be honest with you. I've been trying to stay away from the spoilers for this movie but the last couple of days I've done a piss poor job of that. I've heard people mention that a zip line from one of his bank robberies maybe the cause of his scarring. I don't think that's been entirely confirmed though. Not too sure what the deal would be with the white on his face though(perhaps it was already there and just won't be explained?) or maybe it's all makeup. But posters on here with more knowledge of the TDK going ons have mentioned no acid bath for Mr. J.
:whatever: So joker can just wipe off his make-up? good grief.

Yes, I noticed this as well. No one wanted it, but once they got it no one could stop praising it. I think some are just lowering their expectations so compensate for Nolan. The movie will be great I really have no doubt about that, he is a great flmaker. But Jokers look...its not joker.

Any word on how he acquires the white of his face? Is that just makeup he will be applying? I hope not.

We've some tidbits about the mobsters trying to kill the Joker (probably for cheating his partners out of their share of the loot or whatever, might have to do with the bank robbery) and dumping his body in chemicals or something like that. Of course, there has also been reports that he applies makeup, but not really confirming whether it has to do with his white skin. Some pics of Ledger from the Chicago filming shows him having really, really pale skin. So yeah, at this point, anything is possible until we get more confirmation.

Alright, I know were coming up on the home stretch on the Joker pic but I copied what we have & took existing pixels from his face & pasted em over top of the excess in paint. Hope ya like...

his white/grey face is the result of him having a condition "similar" to an albino. one rumer.

Just a quick question: When are they actually going to pick an actor that physically looks like the joker?

the MPAA might be upset with this look...PG13 still?
