Joker 'JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX' (Phillips and Phoenix return for the sequel) General News & Discussion Thread

I like hearing fun details like this. When such a talented actor shares their own vulnerability and insecurity, it really humanizes them and makes them more compelling imo.

Sometimes the perfect image just falls right into your lap.

Entertainment world not happy about Joaquin doing this to Todd Haynes. RIP to his Oscar chances for Joker 2.

Hinged on Phoenix’s casting, the movie, produced by Killer Films and backed by sales agent MK2 Film, had already sold to international distributors ahead of production. Sources tell Variety the project is in peril, indicating that Phoenix’s role cannot be recast. The crew is now out of work, and stakeholders in the film still need to be paid. Losses could exceed seven figures.

That is not cool.

Get Andrew Scott instead. Also, apparently Phoenix has done this before, so we'll see how long, if at all, it lasts. Doesn't really impact Joker 2, no matter how much folks try to link the two.

Is Todd Haynes not a big enough name to get financing for his projects without Joaquin Phoenix as the lead? Don't these financiers know of his previous work? This makes no sense. Everything can be recast.

Also, I doubt he would have won an Oscar playing the same character anyway.

Unless you are James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, or Christopher Nolan, most film directors are not a big enough name to get films funded by themselves. A bankable star on the poster is important and one dropping out at the eleventh hour can potentially kill a project.

I understand, but his films have won jury prizes at film festivals and received multiple Academy Award noms. Todd is a big name in art-house circles and respected by cinephiles worldwide. These financiers would surely have an understanding of who he is and the types of films he makes, which are the furthest things away from Jurrasic Park or Avatar. They are going for prestige, surely. So the disconnect for me is it all hinging on Joaquin alone, when you have a great auteur like Todd. I'm sure there are more details I'm missing here, because on the surface it's completely nonsensical.

No threequel? But I wanted Joker Ménage à Trois!

But really, we shall see. I would not be upset if this was it, in the same way I wouldn't have been upset if Joker was a one-and-done. If this also receives critical and award praise and does well at the box office, who knows? That said, I would at least like to see more of these Black Label-type DC films. Give me a one off Jonathan Crane movie already!

Lol, Hollywood always bending over backwards trying to figure out how to market a musical adaptation.

That's a tough shot at In the Heights too-- it was critically well-received but people didn't show up at theaters.

If this makes just as much as the first, we’ll see if he sticks to this being the last movie.
