Time to hive this thread THE BIG BUMP! So much has happened since this thread fell by the wayside.

RIP Heath Ledger. :csad:

But though viewing "The Dark Knight" will be a bittersweet experience now, all the same I am looking forward to the film - and in particular The Joker - as much as I ever was!

Now, on with the Joker discussion!

In the new issue of The Gotham Times, this quite unnerving report can be read on page 3:

Mystery Deepens as Family Found Dead at Carnival

The wife and children of Jake Karnassian, the Manager of Buildings and Grounds for the Gotham Unified School District, were found dead at Gotham Carnivalland near Gotham Pier yesterday.

Karnassians wife, Jill, 45, was found bound and gagged, hanging from one of the internal gears in the Ferris wheel. Mechanics discovered the body when they were making routine fixes. The bodies of Jenna, 12, and James, 10, were discovered inside two bumper cars. Karnassian went missing more than a month ago and at the time Gotham Police suggested he may have run off with a mistress.

The discovery of his family dead may alter the trajectory of the investigation...

This seems very macabre, very dark, and very much like The Joker of the comics. But is this indicative of the kind of Joker we're going to get in the film? Just how dark can The Joker be in a PG13 summer blockbuster?

Just how dark? That's a good question.
Many Joker stories/fics that I’ve came across are full of torture/excessive bloody violence and gore. Most fans interpret him “R” rated character.
I’ve read that Heath based his performance on Alex from A Clockwork Orange. THAT was rated “R” for the old Ultra Violence.
Obviously he can’t do what Alex did, not on screen anyway but it can be insinuated. Well, there was a lot of nudity in that movie, not so for TDK.
Joker is the type of Villain that can stand right next to Jigsaw, Pinhead and Hannibal Lector. It’s just the PG-13 rating that will make a difference. I doubt it will have you grabbing the vomit bag due to gore.

I can’t wait to witness just how evil and down right dirty he will get.

If the climax of the movie takes place in an abandoned carnival i will be forced to sex someone.

I wholeheartedly agree. It really does seem to suit Ledger's Joker very much so. It's very twisted, and I can see the Joker enjoying that.

I am very interested to see what they come up with for the final showdown of "The Dark Knight". Something tells me the big car chase, leading into The Joker trailing down the street with his machine gun from the trailer, is more likely to be the climax of the second act rather than the final battle. Most likely, we've not seen anything of the final battle - whatever it is - in the trailers.

I think it would be intriguing if - to contrast with "Begins" going big-scale with its finale - "The Dark Knight" made the scope smaller and more personal towards the end, a very personal battle between Batman and Joker, or Batman/Joker/Dent.

looks only more awesome the more I see of him, though I still have the quibble about the fact he only wears makeup, minus his scars around his mouth of course..

Those scars are so awesome! They jus make the guy look even crazier. :wow:

I wasn't sure what to make of the scars at first, but I've grown to really like them. And I find it interesting that they've begun to incorporate the "cut-smile" look into the comics.

i hope to god that actually happens in the movie . :wow:

The upcoming "Joker: Dark Knight":
I kinda lost track of this project. Wasn't even aware they attached a title.

I like Azzarello enough as a writer and don't really care for Bermejo's Joker, but I'd be lying is I said this hasn't piqued my interest.

Apparently, it was finished ages ago. But it's so dark and disturbing, that DC felt it best to delay its release until several months after the movie, so it's not associated with it.

WOW... that comic looks so dope.

seems like they're really pushing a the cut-smile joker... but what bugs me is how they don't put black around his eyes :(

Yea the black around his eyes makes him look so vicious.

Yes, it does seem the cut-smile is appearing more and more often. And it seems like "Joker: Dark Knight" is giving The Joker a more modern cut of clothing, and longer hair, like Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight".

I wouldn't say I'm particularly against the comics drawing inspiration from The Joker's movie look. So long as they keep him permawhite in the comics, I think comics Joker could probably benefit from a grimier, more sinister appearance.

I love how tattered and grungy Heath looks with his portrayal of Mr. J...Hopefully, though- the closing scene is of him contained in Arkham...Clean make-up, slick and trimmed hair, with a purple straightjacket...And treatment from Dr. Harley Quinzel to follow, of course...

It's an interesting idea. But I think that, if the closing scene is Joker in Arkham, then it'll be with no make-up, a wild mess of long hair, and a normal-colored straitjacket.
