The Dark Knight Joker Scars: Accidental; self inflicted?

Somebody said there is an article where it is explained that one of his Scars was not his own doing, does anybody have the link to that?

It may have been in reference to what was stated in the Wizard issue where they visit the set.

“[The costume] is much more flamboyant and it sort of moves a lot, which he does,” clarifies Hemming of the character’s flailing, manic demeanor. “We started off going through all sorts of reference material with [pop icons] Pete Doherty, Iggy Pop—just going through all kinds of people that we could think of that might dress like that for real because Chris’ whole thing is reality.”

That realistic approach led to a less clowny, more punk rock version of the Joker smeared with white makeup and permanently marked with a bubbled, ugly scar extending his mouth into a monstrous smirk. Reports indicate the Joker begins the film as a nobody thug before an unknown attack results in his disfigurement thanks to a razor blade. Left for dead, the encounter alters the man’s perceptions resulting in the birth of Batman’s greatest villain.

“We just find him dressed like this, and you can assume that he might’ve been dressed like that for years,” Hemming reveals. “Whatever he’s been up to and doing, before we meet him he’s been wearing those clothes. He’s already scarred in the film, and so the makeup comes from what he does to himself to enhance that rather than to look like a clown. It’s much more of a street kind of Joker rather than a man who puts on a clown mask.”

There ya go.

iv seen the prologue and the movie starts with him already having scars...with no explination

Maybe joker explains a little about himself in the interrogation scene?

It's somewhat known that the Joker gives several different explanations throughout the film for his scars. Most are probably not true. Maybe some are. That's completely besides the point because he really shouldn't have a definitive origin as he is more of a force rather than a human (figuratively).

Hope so. But I really have a hunch that it has something to do with his childhood. He says he hates his father. Maybe the wounds are self inflicted. It makes since kinda. His father maybe neglected him and because of that, all his life he felt sad and incomplete. This may have drove him crazy so he carved a smile on his face (with some sort of knife or blade) to symbolize eternal happiness. This may have influenced his whole attitude. To never be serious.

Just an idea. I may be overthinking it though.

Well judging from what was said was actually more disciplinary , "we are not intimidated by thugs" If that reminds him of his father then chances are his father and maybe even his mother were good people and Joker was just a bad egg.

So it probably means Joker felt that his father unjustly punished him for doing bad things causing the hate.

LA times said joker tells two different stories about his scars and basically said he's a liar.

Could be accidental and self inflicted. The right scar looks like it's been done purposefully with a smile in mind, whereas the left side does look like an accident . . . or at least not as purposefully placed.

I like this theory. It would make sense to me that Nolan would have something like that in the back of his mind as well. It reminds me of some serial killers' upbringings and how it altered them. Maybe he simply suffered horrendous abuse and bottled it all up until one day he snapped and just ended up on the far side of the opposite end of the spectrum.

call me a fan of the Jokers past being "multiple choice". He is insane after all.

I'm the same way. The Joker is twisted to an infinite degree so there is no way that he'll give away how he became the way is. His character is so vast and deep (mythos-wise) that no story would justify his psychotic traits. I find this to be one of the biggest faults of B89 actually.

Simply put, he is a much stronger persona if everything is a mystery. And when he does mention a 'story' it's all fun and games. He's just trying to mess with people.

Ha. This guy certainly put all of you in your place!

(Apart from the little issue of the Prologue... But it was a great argument till the!)

one cut is obviously done on purpose, it has a cut up and curls. the others looks like a slash to the face. i always thought that joker would have worked on the other scar to make it more smile like, he doesnt seem to be the type to hold onto the past at all
