Action-Adventure 'Jungle Cruise' Movie starring The Rock and Emily Blunt

He just needs to work with stronger directors in the vein of James Cameron, John McTiernan, John Milius and Ivan Reitman like Arnold did in his prime.

Dwayne needs to get cracking on Doc Savage with Shane Black. (Although apparently there's some legal issues with that one).

Shane Black is exactly the kind of director I'd be interested to see how he uses him.

Take this news with a grain of salt, as it has yet to be confirmed by any other sources. The Sun is reporting that comedian Jack Whitehall is joining the cast of Disney’s upcoming film Jungle Cruise as the openly gay brother of Emily Blunt’s character. Whitehall’s character is described by sources as being “hugely effete, very camp, and very funny,” which is not necessarily the best way to describe a character who’s leading the charge in Disney LGBT+ representation.

What is this I don't even

*sighs*. I get it. I really do. But we are talking about Jungle Cruise here. If people are upset that the character might be a gay stereotype, then get mad at the writers, not the actor.

Please let's not get into the "only gay actors can play gay characters" because that's a very slippery slope.

Now if the character turns out to be a joke caricature, fine get upset once the movie is actually released. Not "sources say".

And that article title is misleading since Disney's already had their first openly gay character. His name was Lefou.

The Lefou being gay articles were misleading. They tiptoed around that like hell in the actual movie even if Josh Gad did play it on the more flamboyant side. That part where he danced with another guy was a two second blink-and-you-miss-it shot. People made such a big deal about it before it was released and they were extremely shy about it in the actual movie.

I get the feeling that this character will more than likely be done exactly the same way.

Exactly.
It won’t even bother me when I see the movie.

Before the usual suspects come in here whining about SJWs, I feel like this is a take worth reading...

I don't give a damn if a straight actor plays a gay character, or vice versa.

Now, if this character turns out to be a horribly outdated gay caricature, then that'd be worth being annoyed over.

I do think this is valid. Unfortuantely, there's an increasingly obnoxious group of commentators, namely on Twitter, that can't seem to grasp the fact that acting is all about playing a different person. And unfortuantely their yelling drowns out any talk about the real concern of LGBT actors trying to break out into diverse roles. Which is why I feel that if you're going to hype up your "first gay character" it probably would have been a good idea to cast a gay actor.

Again, I understand the argument. It's about giving openly gay actors more opportunity. But I think this argument is a double edged sword for THIS role. It's a gay character, but does his gayness have anything to do with the plot beyond comic relief? If it's played as a stereotype of an effete gay male, would a gay person want to be associated with it? We don't know yet. We also don't know the casting call for this. Did it specifically say "straight actors only"? If so, then yes, that's a problem. But if this was an open call, and the actor was the one who had the performance the producers were looking for, isn't that enough?

I can understand if they were making a movie about the gay experience, be it fictional or not, so hiring a gay actor or actress could enhance that performance (Although one could argue that Call Me By Your Name and Moonlight featured well received praise for straight actors in gay roles). But this is Jungle Cruise here. I don't think it's a movie that is necessarily going for a social commentary message.

Does it matter? the film won't succeed or fail because a character is gay, straight, male or female, black or white.
It will rise or fall on it's on merits.

It matters to the gay community because they feel they have not been given fair representation on screen.

Wait, what's the controversy here, Dwayne's playing a gay dude?

I don't get it, wouldn't that be a good thing? Pretty sure he's not exactly going to present the character in a negative light.

Sounds like he’s the Jonathan to Blunt’s Evey from the mummy
