Action-Adventure 'Jungle Cruise' Movie starring The Rock and Emily Blunt

He got blacklisted after he refused sexual advances from someone high up in the HFPA. Tragic really but he’s made a bit of a comeback in recent years.

Oh f***......

Hope he's doing better professionally and personally. Seemed like a super decent guy.

Really? I don't see a bunch of low budget indie dramas in his IMDB listing.

Now it could be a strategic move, with Mr. Johnson deciding that the potential blowback from a lawsuit wouldn't benefit him all that much. And it is better long term for him to remain as America's most beloved film star than risk his standing on a public squabble. Also, his earning potential going forward is much higher than the Disney Three, so he can more easily shake off a hit to his paycheck.

But my best guess is Dwayne got paid.

Because those aren't the sort of films he enjoys doing. Hes said before that he wants to make films that can be watched and be fun for everyone. That there are some types of characters he won't play and some actions he won't let his characters perform. My impression is he makes films to entertain people more than anything.

And since Disney pretty much has a monopoly on family films, and is the biggest studio in Hollywood I doubt Rock wants to get in a legal battle with them over money he can get other ways. He'll get more films. He'll get another paycheck. Burning bridges to ring millions more from one production probably wouldn't serve his goals.

Especially with a meeting about a potential sequel next week

We’ll see about the sequel. Rampage was supposed to have a sequel too. It really depends how big it drops next weekend.

Every movie that has come out this summer dropped significantly in the second weekend. It shouldn’t be surprising when Jungle Cruise drops but of course people will blame Disney+ for that. Suicide Squad also comes out next weekend so that will be a factor too.

I enjoyed the film. The Rock and Blunt and had great chemistry. It's in the same mold as The Mummy and Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Jesse Plemmons seemed to be having fun as the villainous German Prince.

Yes and no. A Quiet Place II dropping 59% compared to 68% of Black Widow is a big enough difference. Also, the third weekend is important to look at as well. QPII dropped 37%, Black Widow 55%.

I think a drop of under 60% will be a positive sign for it. Yes, The Suicide Squad is competition but not really the same audience.

I watched it.

I had really high hope for this and was personally let down a bit. Was that due to my high hopes? Maybe, but I'll give some NON-Spoiler thoughts on it.

Let me start off by saying I LOVE the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The Brendon Fraser Mummy films, The original Indiana Jones films and the Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile etc. Thats one reason why I looked forward to this film as it really presented itself similar to those in the trailers that I watched.

My Complaints:
1) There were times I found the film to be boring and caught myself checking the run time etc. 2hrs and 7 mins felt WAY longer than that at times.

2) I couldn't help but feel like it tried too hard at being the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" type film or franchise for Disney. Everything from the Villains to parts of the story and the style/type of action I just felt too much of a similarity (Cant say ripoff since both are Disney properties).

3) FRANCHISE, FRANCHISE, FRANCHISE. Expanding on that, I totally get Franchise's are hot and money makers IF you can get them going, people interested and present quality stories with characters and such people care about. However, again much like my previous point. It felt like it was trying too hard.

4) I found certain cast members/characters annoying. I was no fan of Jesse Plemons character at all. Just........ IDK annoyed. I know THIS is the character you are not supposed to like, but just something about his performance that annoyed me.

My likes:
1) Most of the cast were enjoyable. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt were fine. Paul Giamatti was fine as I'm generally a fan anyway.

2) Visually fun and pleasing on the eyes.

All in all it was ok but far from great and even further than what I had hoped it would be. I've seen worse but was let down.
Where would I rank this in my re-watch list? Hmmm..... If my kids wanted to watch it again I'd watch it but not pay much attention to it. Something for the background while I focused on something else, again, only if they requested to watch it again.

Scale of 1 to 10..... hmm... I'd say a 5, middle of the road for me I guess. I can see where some will really enjoy it but can see where some will likely have similar feelings as I do.

Yeah I liked the movie but I think Plemmons’ character could have been removed so that you had Ramirez and the other conquistadors be the central antagonists. Plemmons had some funny moments but he mostly just got in the way.

My other main complaint was making the brother character so foppish through at least 2/3 of the movie. I would think that by now, mainstream movies wouldn’t be relying on stereotype humor for LGBTQ characters but I guess we still have **** to work on. And it’s honestly a shame that they went that route with him because Whitehall is good in the role overall and really shines in moments where they aren’t trying way too hard to make him flamboyant.

this makes it even more fun

Yeah they really should have went with one villain or the other but not both. I think that could have worked better

Given the time period and the class that the brother comes from him being foppish is believable regardless of his sexual orientation. Frankly I found it endearing, because you've got this nice reversal of a strong sister in a time when women are expected to be reserved and dainty protecting her brother.

And honestly I didn't even consider that he was gay before he told Frank. He just seemed like a guy that liked the finer things in life, and wasn't a fan of roughing it.

It seems they tried to do what Gore did with Becket and Jones in AWE with Plemmons being in a position of power over Aguirre. But it never really develop any kind of strong dynamic.

I need you to understand that most of his scenes were reportedly reshot. I've been bugging Darth with excitement to see it for years now, ever since initial reports said studio executives told the crew to fix him. This is the toned down one! And he still acted like that. I was rolling with laughter at how he felt plucked out of the 90s.

Haven't finished it yet but I enjoyed it so far!

I love Emily but cannot say the same with The Rock. In my opinion, no matter which genre The Rock is playing, he will do something that feels or looks like a scifi movie. There's sci-fi and "the Rock's" sci-fi, which usually involves him doing extraordinary things and/or alien strength (or these two combined), for example:
when he fought with the tiger
. But on the other hand, he delivered those dad jokes spectacularly and I found myself laughing.

The Disney aesthetic is there 100% - even the constant music, I really like that.

That was a jaguar. The females only weigh around 200 pounds. A man the size of the Rock can lift 200 pounds.
Plus, Proxima was trained by Frank so that fight was staged.

I had a problem with it at first until it was revealed. I thought it was a fun little gag/twist

Yeah I liked the way they handled that too.
It was kind of meta that the film was fooling the audience the same way Frank was fooling the people in the bar.

And they are here.

It is 100% Pirates meets the Mummy. If you liked those, you will like this one.

OK. I definitely enjoyed it. To me it was more Cindi ana Jones and the petal to the metal.

I thought they worked very well together and, if Blunt is so inclined, I can see a few of these movies making it to the big screen. The Rock would be up for it no doubt. Blunt was actually the main character IMO and that rather surprised me.

It was VERY Disney. It's hard to remember for sure because I tend to focus on the movie, but I don't recall the typical, distinct soundtrack (like Star Wars or Indiana Jones) during high action scenes.

Watched Jungle Cruise last night and I very much enjoyed it. The film definitely has The Mummy, Indiana Jones, and POTC vibes

Jesse Plemons’ over the top German prince character was hilarious and so was Emily Blunt’s brother. Those two stood out the most to me and had the most comedic moments

Emily Blunt and the Rock were great together and had excellent chemistry. The way they played off each other was reminiscent of how Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz interacted in The Mummy. I enjoyed all the lame jokes & puns said by the Rock that was straight out of the actual Disney parks ride lol

The overall plot, the curse, and Conquistador villains was straight out of POTC but it still worked though I wish we would have seen more of those villains

But overall I liked the movie

I enjoyed this, it's a fairly solid family blockbuster, no POC or Mummy but on it's own merits I thought this was fine. If it had a better villain it could have competed with those movies.
