Just came back from it. It was competently done in technical terms: the special effects are great, the actors are all good, the camera work is decent, et al.
The greatest highlights for me are: (1) the callbacks to the original, as in visiting the hall from the first movie, bringing back Dr. Wu, mentioning Hammond`s "spared no expense", et al; and (2) hearing the theme song again. Boy, is that a fantastic theme. I missed John Williams for the rest of the movie though.
Nevertheless, there are some ridiculous things in this movie, at least in my eyes: (1) The characters are beyond cartoonish, it`s completely jarring. Probably the worst offender is Pratt`s Owen Grady, who grabs a fly mid-air, which prompted laughter in my screening. It seems as if Trevorrow was so desperate to make him seem cool that he robbed the character of any story arc. Also cringe-worthy is D`Onofrio`s Hoskins, whose plan actually involved turning dinosaurs into war assets, which is a concept a child would find remotely believable. When the best characters in your movie are the kids, you`ve probably broken a record or two.
I had no use for the dinosaur fight either. Turning them into pets neuters them as threats and makes the whole franchise kind of pointless in hindsight. I could have enjoyed a less in-your-face version of it, with the Mosassaurus eating the Indominus Rex after she had been led to the former`s lair through a trap; but not as it stands now.
