Keanu is awesome.

I had this talk with my friends about this:

I'm glad that finally Japanese actors/actresses get to play Japanese characters in an American film. It's also like American studios rely so much on the Koreans to play the Japanese for some odd reason. :p

Of course I'm joking but John Cho (Star Trek), Rain (Speed Racer, Ninja Assassian), the due from who played Shadow Storm in GI Joe, it's almost damn hard to find any available Japanese actors to play in US based film besides Ken Wantanbe.

If this wasn't the 1950's, i'd like the see a bunch of fellow Asain warriors led by John Wayne again.

Even though Keanu looks damn young for his age, who else thinks he's losing his good looks?

Cool Hiroyuki Sanada is in this. They should get Takeshi Kaneshiro from House Of Flying Daggers in this as well. He speaks fluent English.

One of the main reasons is that Koreans generally have better English skills than Japanese nationals do; in Korea, pretty much anyone who's had a decent education can speak some English. When it comes to Asian-Americans, because of immigration patterns it's easier to find an actor of Korean or Chinese descent than someone of Japanese descent.

As a Chinese person, I have no problem with Koreans playing Japanese, Chinese playing Korean, etc. In fact, it makes me quite angry when I hear a lot of left-wing activists calling cross-cultural casting a form of racism. It's totally not.

Don't they also hire some of these actors for Asian marketing purposes? I remember when Rain was cast, media made a big deal of him being some big pop star. Most recently we got Jay Chou in Green Hornet.

I don't have a problem with Koreans playing Japanese or whatever; I'm Asian-American myself. But I've just noticed that there's a lack of Japanese or Japanese-American actors in Hollywood. But you're right: It seems like they Japanese from Japan may lack the English skills that other nationals have. Or they're aren't as many Japanese Americans who are in acting period.

In fact, thinking about it, it's kinda rare for me to see the Japanese where I live. It's mostly Vietnamese, Chinese or Korean.

Yeah, it's mostly due to immigration patterns. Since the 1900s, immigration from Japan to Canada and the U.S. has been sparse in comparison to China, Korea and Vietnam. As a result, the exisiting Japanese communities in North America have been here so long they've blended almost completely into the rest of society, so you might find a lot of people with some Japanese ancestry but don't look Asian at all, so won't really get any Asian roles (i.e. Reiko Aylesworth).

I wonder what that guy who played Hiro from Heroes is up too

At the Home Depot. I kid, I kid. Poor guy.

It's just much harder for Asian actors. With John Cho for example, he has dashing good looks so that's why he can get roles a plenty, and not just comedic ones.

Where as I think Hiro is stuck being the 'funny Asian best friend'. Or the 'Gay Asian Receptionist'! :p

How can you say that, with so many leading roles out for Asian actors, like in Last Airbender, Dragonball: Evolution and 21? ;)

Hiroyuki Sanada(LOST,Sunshine)

I like this guy a lot. Not seen him in much but he's pretty awesome in The Last Samurai.

Not sure why I bumped this thread; was hoping for some pics or news or something. I guess there aren't a lot of people hunting set pics in Budapest.

Hiroyuki Sanada starred in a film called The Twilight Samurai and it was SUPERB. The guy is a definite talent. Glad to hear he's on board. This film is moving up on my interest list.

Nice find, I'll be interested to see how they have approached this when a trailer arrives.

Yeah, The 47 Ronin is a controversial piece of literature and history in Japan.

There's a good chance that the film will be criticized before it even hits theaters when the marketing machine takes over.

I have incredibly high hopes for the production. Ridley Scott most promising student is directing (Carl Earl Rinsch) and the cast is beyond incredible. Refer to The Gift if you'd like to see a taste of what Carl is capable of.

I really hope this is the movie that slaps some major sense into a lot of execs at all the major studios.

Those pictures look really good. One of my most anticipated movies of 2012.
