King Kong{2005} Appreciation Thread

Jack was also a jerk in the original Kong, the natives were ****ing laughable there but quite menacing here, there's a much better build up that gives Skull Island a great aura before we even see it, no supporting characters in the original are anywhere near as good as Lumpy or the Captain in PJ's film, there's a reason for everything Kong does in PJ's film where in the original he just does it because he's pissed...

I hated KOH, and I feel the same about the extended cut of it that you feel about Kong.:oldrazz: It added nothing but screen time to a film that was already overly long, boring, and just plain terrible; an inferior rehash of every ancient battle epic since Braveheart.
I was looking forward to that so much only to be let down so badly, I was looking forward to PJ's Kong only for it to be even better than I expected.

I'm glad this is getting the appreciation that it deserves. Personally, I think it's tied with Batman Begins as the best film of 2005.

I love Peter Jackson, he is probably the most original filmmaker to ever make a film. He created Lord of the Rings and then King Kong. Two amazing masterpieces he solely brought to life through blood, sweat, and tears. He worked very hard on King Kong, so hard in fact that it made him lose weight when slim fast wasn't working. So that is why I think King Kong is the best.

:)

Just watched this movie for the first time in a long time tonight and i forgot how truly phenominal this movie is.

Superb performances from all of the leads, especially Naomi Watts (When Ann Darrow LOOKS at Kong, you'd SWEAR Kong was actually there), but the best performance is from Kong himself, whoever gets the credit between Serkis, Jackson or WETA deserves it, he was just amazing, sympathetic, awe inspiring, and a character you couldnt help but love. He was a representation of mans primal instinct and its pulled of perfectly.

The action was phenominal, with the V-Rex fight scene the best action scene in the movie IN A LONG TIME. Dont get me wrong, the likes of Superman Returns, Transformers, The Spiderman movies, The Matrix Trilogy, etc all had amazing action sequences, but NON of them touched Kong vs The V-Rex's for sheer epicness, emotional weight and jaw dropping special effects. Of course, these brilliant action sequences were accompanied by EVEN BETTER character scene's, particularly the ones between Ann and Kong. Watching the Sunset on Skull Island, being re-united in NY (its just beautifully poetic when Kong spots Ann and everything just STOPS except those two, truly touching), the scene on the ice (my personal favourite, and Kong and Ann's last true happy moment together), and then watching the sunset in NY. ALL of these scenes are even better than the action scenes we get, and they all go to show Kong is more than just "a dumb animal" in this movies, he has a heart and cares for Ann in a BIG way, and it all adds to the emotional weight of the movie.

Throw the brilliant but tragic ending, that makes you question whether the humans were the "dumb animals" who dont know nothing and if WE are the true monstors, and you just have an incredible movie that i will be watching for years and years to come.

Plus the extended edition is even better, AMAZING movie, how there are people who dont like this movie is just mind boggling to me.

It's a good movie that could be turned into pure greatness with some editing.

But yeah, that Kong vs. V-Rexes fight? Probably one of the best action scenes ever. Simple as that. I remember having to catch my breath after it ended, taking a huge sigh of relief. I've never had that kind of reaction with any other movie. Undeniably badass.

I have this but never watched it. I bought it for 5 dollars on black friday last year at wal-mart.

I cant beleive how much people hate this movie...and some even think the original was better . Dont get me wrong, I enjoy 1933 King Kong but this one is much better.
I LOVE this movie and its really underrated. If people want to mention an overrated movie by Peter Jackson mention ROTK...11 oscars that were not deserved
I take back the ROTK comment, its great....yeah I screwed up, deal with it :o.
But my comment on KK still stands. I love 33s Kong but PJ's is better.
I admit though 3 hours is super long. It should've been 2 hours and 30 mins max. And there is an extended edition too?wtf!?...still love it though

this movie was too long and over-indulgent for it's own good, in my opinion... just like the LOTR movies. and this movie just felt like it had no heart. peter jackson tried, but it just didn't come through on screen. all of the emotion felt so artificial.

the movie had it's moments, but they came too little, and (much, much) too late.

and the cgi was pretty good, even great i some of the scenes, but the way it was done was just soooo obvious. it wasn't integrated into the movie at all. it was all just too clean... and some of the green screen was downright awful.

Kong 2005 is the best cure for insomnia in the world. That's appreciation since I can't sleep.

It elevated itself well above a simple monster movie with a great story about human nature and the most moving relationship ever captured onscreen between two characters. Great is putting it mildly.
Other than Jimmy (who has all about of 5 minutes of screen time that's actually about him anyway), there no useless subplots.
Jackson yet again showed his ability to blend visual spectacle with heartfelt emotion like no other can; and the V-Rex fight is one of the greatest fights ever. This movie pretty much defines epic (and having to defend her from a family of V-Rex's is more intense than a single one).
Kong 33 and 76 are really, really good unintentional comedies; but really, really bad movies.

I don't disagree with the idea of the relationship he tried to put forward - besides the entirely illogical nature of it; it's the execution where it kind of falls down. It's horrendously over-the-top (that scene where they slide around on the ice being the prime example, but only one of many), and far from the " most moving relationship ever captured onscreen between two characters."

To say that the original King Kong is an 'unintentional comedy' and a 'really bad movie' makes you, at the least deserving of a *itchslap. At the least. I wouldn't disagree with you, for the most part, regarding the '76 film, though.

One of the best action scene's ever, simple as that, i was the same, i remember just having to sit back and catch my breath after that fight, i still have to now and i've watched it about 20 times!

ROTK is amazing, KK isnt quite as good, but it isnt far off, KK is PJ's 4th masterpiece IMO, its just an astonishingly amazing and emotional movie, one of the closest i have ever come to crying in the cinema, despite the fact i'm a man and i knew how it ended! THATS great directing for you.

I actually really liked Peter Jackson's King Kong. When he's atop the Empire State Building, fighting the planes, it's spectacular. Especially the background. Detailed amazingly.

The Extended DVD is pure Awsomeness, with the Swamp scene and the extra Dinosaurs and so on,its a absolute must have.

I still haven't seen the extended dvd...got it for christmas and left it at a friends...haven't seen him in a long time.

but on the regular movie...I loved it! but i thought they spent way too much time on the boat going to Skull Island...and missed an opportunity to show stuff on the boat headed back to America...so if any of that stuff is in the extended dvd...then cool...otherwise i always felt like the getting to skull island was so long, and difficult...and then suddenly after kong goes down...bam...we're in New York. Great great remake...an adventure film that is actually adventerous!

I really liked Jackson's King Kong, it took the original and elevated it to incredible new heights. Actually making the audience care about Kong, rather than making him just a mindless animal. Too many people whine about it's length, but I never even notice the length, the movie moves at a good pace and none of the scenes seem too drawn out, just as they do, something happens to change things up. Plus Naomi Watts looked great.

The extended version is the best Kong movie ever. hands down.

I like this movie, but frankly it could've trim the first 1/3 of the movie and make the movie feel tighter and not so slow before Kong shows up. Naomi Watts is one of my favorite actresses and I really love her in this role, but Brody got on my nerves; I wish Kong would've killed him off. Btw, Weta did an amazing job on Kong. Probably one of the best CGI creatures ever on the big screen.

I guess I have to see the extended edition to see if it makes the movie even better.

Totally agree, I don't know what I was smoking but the film is good. I only like Fellowship more by an inch.

There was someone in my theater who giggled when Kong fell off...than came a cacophony of moans and 'come on man', you could tell the theater wanted to ***** slap him :hehe:.
In all seriousness though, PJ made Kong more than just a monster. I think 33 is the more important film but Peter brought depth to the charecters so I must admit he made the better film, even though its not a fair comparison (time period wise) its the truth nonetheless.

Exactly, it made us care about an animal that killed people, left, right and centre, thats just amazing directing for you, aided by some immense help from Watts and WETA.

Agreed. As a kid, i loved the 33 version, but this one is just so much better at developing Kong and Anne.

Fellowship is my favourite of the LOTR trilogy, with ROTK close behind, KK and TTT are roughly about the same for me, but all 4 are masterpieces.

You're right, it isnt a fair comparison, but the fact remains, PJ's Kong is simply the better movie, stuff like Kong watching teh sunset with Anne on Skull Island, Kong holding out his hand to her just before he loses consciousness, their last bit of joy on the ice in NY, and Kong touching his chest when he sees the sunrise in NY, mimicing Anne's response on Skull Island, scene's like this are what made us LOVE Kong as a character in PJ's version, it was just amazing character development for what was essentially an animal, an ANIMAL, awesome directing by PJ.

I agree. I thought Kong should've received a nomination for best acting by a CGI creature, because Weta made him act better than many actors in Hollywood.

Agreed, i cared more about Kong than i do most humans in most other movies, it was just a stunning effort from everyone involved.

I have to give props to Naomi Watts also, because of her interaction with Kong makes you really believe that Kong really did exist.
