SNK has released the fifteen and sixteenth in its series of “Team Gameplay” trailers for The King of Fighters XIV. These introduce the K’ and Women Fighters teams.

The K’ Team includes Maxima, K’, and Kula Diamond, and the Women Fighters Team includes Mai Shiranui, King, and Alice. All six are detailed below via Atlus:
Team K’

  • Maxima – Team K’ is comprised of elite fighters who used to be members of nefarious Illuminati-type syndicate known as NESTS. The team’s presumed leader is the cyborg weapon Maxima who will do everything in his power to shut down the evil organization. This includes assaulting tournament opponents with strikes, grappling moves, and advanced weaponry. You don’t want to mess with him.
  • – Like Maxima, K’ is quite the dangerous fighter. While K’ doesn’t have cybernetic enhancements, he has been infused with the DNA of Kyo Kusanagi which allows him to control fire. His self taught pure violence style of fighting, coupled with his affinity for flames, makes him a good teammate to watch your back.
  • Kula Diamond – The ice skating queen. Originally trained to assassinate K’, Kula has flipped the script and now joins the fight to bring down NESTS. She’s an extremely dangerous combatant who wields ice powers and fights with an Anti-K’ style (makes sense), and will help the team do whatever it takes to complete their task.
Team Women Fighters

  • Mai Shiranui – The iconic ninja. The only thing more dangerous than her looks is her skill with Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and ability to create fire. She may act like a totally ditz, but that’s just so she can lure enemies into a false sense of security before thrashing them with masterful ninja techniques.
  • King – The hard-hitting bartender. Although King can whip up a deliciously dangerous Mai Tai, she prides herself on whipping opponents in the ring with her deadly Muay Thai strikes. Don’t sleep on her, unless you want to get rudely awoken by some ‘bows to the face.
  • Alice – The bubbly Alice models her fighting style after her idols Terry and Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi. Although she might not emulate their styles perfectly, she’s still a very capable fighter who hits opponents so hard that money flies out of their pockets! It’s safe to say that Team Women fighters have one of the best shots at the tournament belt.
If you missed it, previous trailers introduced Another World Team, Ikari Warriors Team, Psycho Soldier Team, China Team, South Town Team, Mexico Team, South America Team, Official Invitation Team, Villains Team, Kim Team, Art of Fighting Team, Fatal Fury Team, Yagami Team, and Japan Team.
The King of Fighters XIV is due out for PlayStation 4 in North America on August 23, in Japan on August 25, and in Europe on August 26.

The King Of Fighters XIV Characters’ Stories Are Told In The Ring. August 22, 2016 . 12:00pm

The King of Fighters XIV’s story mode is short on story,
but there are still other means of learning more about its combatants.

23 comments Read >

Certain fighting games have spoiled us when it comes to stories. Their arcade modes can tell lavish tales, sometimes in visual novel form, that allow us unprecedented access to characters. The King of Fighters XIV doesn’t exactly do that. It’s Story Mode doesn’t give you incredible insights into each individual. That doesn’t mean we don’t get glimpses at who people are and what their personalities might be like. Rather, it means we actually have to fight it out to find what we’re looking for.

The King of Fighters XIV’s Story begins with Antonov welcoming people to a new KOF Tournament. We see a huge crowd as he welcomes all the men and women to the ring. Aside from this introductory segment and two ending scenes, there isn’t much exposition. A few videos are attributed to leaders of teams, showing them at an important moment in their storyline. Nakoruru, as an example, catches a glimpse of the otherworldly entity that brought her to the tournament. Aside from these brief asides, it’s completely fixated on the tournament itself.

This means most of The King of Fighters XIV’s flavor comes from the pre-battle conversations. Certain characters will have something to say to one another before a fight. These only come up in the Story mode’s battles, between your active fighter and his or her opponent. Some make sense. Angel and Sylvie Paula Paula are both former members of NESTS. The former recognizes the latter, resulting in a bit of a conversation before the match to establish a motivation for the fight. Andy and Mai are a couple and react as such when they meet. Athena and Mian greet each other as fellow performers, vowing to put on a good show during their fight.

As silly as it may sound, I think I enjoyed the nonsensical conversations more than the serious ones. When Mui Mui and Kensou meet, they talk about food. Dim sum, to be specific. Why Mui Mui and Kensou? I don’t know! That’s what makes it so much fun. Love Heart and Athena talk about love interests. Which probably won’t mean much to us, since we don’t have the Sky Love information necessary to appreciate that Athena and Kensou’s relationship is very similar to Love’s and Earth, a young man part of the Peace Pirate crew. Still, it’s enjoyable nonetheless.

Though really, each character’s moveset is helpful in sussing out elements of a character’s personality too. Sylvie Paula Paula is completely and utterly whimsical, using her electrical abilities to hurt others and help propel herself about the ring and cheering with orchestrated poses after a win. She makes a goofy face in her victory screen. We hear Maxima’s cybernetic parts moving and shifting as he fights, parts arranging and rearranging. The King of Dinosaurs is savage, moving as you’d expect a T-rex would, while still maintaining wrestling moves. His roars and stage presence is impressive, making it clear he’s a strong showman. Both Meitenkun and Chin Gentsai are the epitome of relaxed. They can even appear lackadaisical. Yet, their movements and attacks have a quality that shows their strength and skill, even while seeming accidental. The first few times you’ll see their attacks and stances, you may not notice the artistry and purpose that is evident after playing as the character for a few matches.

The cast of The King of Fighters XIV’s stories aren’t really told in the story mode. It’s more a means of seeing the actual tournament in action. That doesn’t mean we’re totally in the dark about all of these new and returning fighters. People paying attention during the story can learn all sorts of new and old things about the participants, if the timing and party arrangements are right. Between that and everyone’s unique fighting styles, it’s possible to see how unique each character really is.

The King of Fighters XIV will be available on the PlayStation 4 in North America and South America on August 23, 2016. It will arrive in Japan on August 25, 2016 and Europe on August 26, 2016.

The King Of Fighters’ Pachinko Heroines Are Full Of Personality. August 24, 2016 . 12:00pm

The King of Fighters XIV’s three heroines plucked from pachinko games
are interesting additions to the series’ roster.

40 comments Read >

The King of Fighters XIV is home to characters from all sorts of SNK series. Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Ikari Warriors, Psycho Soldier, and Samurai Showdown characters all show up. This means there’s a certain sense of familiarity present, because all of these people have appeared in games that have been localized. We know who they are, either due to the original titles or recurring The King of Fighter appearances. That isn’t so for Alice, Love Heart, and Mui Mui, as all three found their footing in pachinko games.

Alice is unique, in that she has quite a history behind her. She’s supposedly inspired by Alice Chrysler, who was supposed to be a background character in Fatal Fury, but instead found her way into other games. Her first official appearance was actually in the SNK Days of Memories dating series. She appeared in the sixth game, Days of Memories: Junpaku no Ten****achi, which was only released on mobile phones in Japan. She’s a nurse-in-training who’s tending to the player after he’s injured while riding a horse. The one carry over from Days of Memories to The King of Fighters XIV is her personality, as she’s a very bright and energetic young woman.

In the Garou Densetsu: The Legend of Wild Wolf and Garou Densetsu Special pachinko games, Alice has a larger presence. Both are games inspired by the Fatal Fury series, with players following Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi. While those three are the main characters, going through events taken from and inspired by Fatal Fury, Alice can appear as a roulette character or appearing during other sequences. It’s these appearances that most inspire her portrayal in The King of Fighters XIV. She’s a huge Terry fan, wearing a hat he once gave her, and constantly trying to train and mimic his style, thus getting his attention. I suppose you could consider The King of Fighters counter part to Street Fighter’s Sakura.

Love Heart, the second The King of Fighters XIV pachinko heroine, is more famous than Alice. She’s the star of the Sky Love series, of which there have been four. She’s head of the Peace Pirates crew, flying around the world on the Elicion III to right wrongs and continually battle the Devil Pirates. She’s joined by Earth Justice, her childhood friend who does all-purpose tasks on the ship, Raiko Tanaka, a sorcerer, and Zack Meat, the muscle who keeps their ship intact. Love Heart is a very capable and dedicated leader, known for her sword-fighting abilities. She’s also appeared in the Sister Quest: The Wonder & True Story pachinko game.

Naturally, she’s not carrying a huge sword around for The King of Fighters XIV. She instead focuses on some rather devastating punches and kicks. Her demeanor is actually rather elegant and proper, considering she’s a pirate. She slaps her opponent for one standard attack, rather than deal a typical punch. Her conversations with other characters also reference her role in her own world and relationships there-in. Love has a similar relationship with Earth as Athena does with Kensou. Earth has a crush on Love, like Kensou does Athena, and she seems to handle and address the situation in the same way.

Mui Mui is the most famous The King of Fighters XIV pachinko heroine of all. She’s basically SNK’s pachinko mascot, having appeared in Dragon Gal, Sister Quest, Samurai Spirits Gaiden: Cham Cham, and The King of Fighters 2. She’s a capable young woman and martial artist with the power of a dragon. In her game, she’s set off to reclaim her family’s stolen seal, a gift from the aforementioned dragon. She’s joined by a few friends, like Lee, Paku, and Pui Pui the panda, on her way. Her strength and speed are often highlighted.

Yet, her defining character trait in both games tends to be her appetite. In Dragon Gal, one of the minigames sees her competing for the most nikuman pork buns. This voracious appetite is referenced multiple times in The King of Fighters XIV as well. In particular, she’ll complain about our world’s dim sum with Kensou. This will prompt him to agree to take her out for food later.

The good thing about all three pachinko heroines’ inclusion in The King of Fighters XIV is that you don’t need to know about their series’ lore to appreciate them. Each heroine can stand tall on her own, without that additional information. All you need to know is that Alice is a cheerful fighter who idolizes Terry, Love Heart is a respectable pirate captain, and Mui Mui is an energetic martial artist.

The King of Fighters XIV is immediately available in North and South America. It will come to Japan on August 25, 2016 and Europe on August 26, 2016.

Enjoying The Party VS. In The King Of Fighters XIV. August 26, 2016 . 12:00pm

The King of Fighters XIV’s Party VS. is a smooth and entertaining experience that lets you feel like you’re cooperating in a competitive environment.

17 comments Read >

The King of Fighters XIV currently has some online issues. Anyone with a copy of the game who’s tried to enter into an online Ranked Match, Free Match, or Online Training may have noticed it the lag or room information acquisition errors. Yasuyuki Oda, The King of Fighters XIV’s producer, even said on Facebook that SNK Playmore knows what’s causing the problem and is preparing a fix for next week. In the meantime, both he and others have found one online element that does work, and that’s Party VS.

The King of Fighters XIV uses an input delay netcode. This means when you press buttons for moves, the game will register and recognize them. They’ll just be implemented on a delay, due to the quality of the connection. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work. My early online experiences were largely unpleasant, even after the day one patch. Things in The King of Fighters XIV are fine if I go through the campaign, do some training, or fight battles against a friend offline. Better than fine. It’s great. The second I entered most matches online, well, that’s a different story.

If I did find a fight, either via a Ranked Match or Free Match with friends, there was constant lag. Sometimes, it was relatively minor, but it usually caused every action to drag. We could barely do anything. This was with an ethernet cable plugged into my PlayStation 4 and everyone with allegedly full bars. I was only able to test one-on-one matches during this period, because there weren’t the numbers for anything else.

Once The King of Fighters XIV launched and other people were playing, I was finally able to get into Party VS. Party VS. is The King of Fighters XIV’s six player online multiplayer. The group is divided into two teams of three, with each person controlling one character. Fights proceed as normal, though you only fight when your turn comes up. Everyone is divvied up, randomly if you so choose, picks their fighter, and the match begins.

When The King of Fighters XIV works in Party VS., it’s an extraordinary experience. Everything is clean and smooth. Perhaps I was fortunate enough to have two good days, but I had absolutely no issues on either Wednesday or Thursday. You’re a spectator when you’re not playing. Even the audio was clear and free from any delay when people had their mics plugged in to chat.

It was delightful, because it encouraged a sense of cooperation. I was in it to win it, of course. We all were. But, The King of Fighters XIV’s Party VS also encouraged a sense of camaraderie. You rooted for the other people on your side, even if you were randomly tossed together and didn’t know one another. It was nice to have a little cooperation, even if I wasn’t directly supporting someone, in such a competitive game. If I won, my team benefitted. If I didn’t, well, then maybe I helped knock off enough of my enemy’s health to make it easier for the next person on my team.

The only annoyance was an ever-present, opaque box on the right side of the screen showing who was in the room. It was an unnecessary distraction. I didn’t need to know and see who was there. Especially when no one was using mics and only wanted to play. I didn’t need to know who was there, and I couldn’t find an option to get rid of it.

There was one problem, though. While Party VS. is pretty much a guaranteed good time, you have to get into a room first. I haven’t had any trouble getting into rooms I had created or was invited to, but if I attempt to get into a room someone else had created in any other Free Match online mode, seven times out of ten I’ll receive a “Could not acquire room information” error. It’s an issue plaguing many. The best advise I have regarding it is to completely leave the Online Menu completely, then come back to it and try again.

It isn’t exactly smooth sailing in The King of Fighters XIV just yet. While everything offline works perfectly, your mileage may vary with any online experiences. Party VS. works exceptionally well, if you can find yourself a room, and SNK Playmore is aware of the issues and preparing fixes, so now’s the best time to start working with other people, building your skills with one specific fighter, and getting ready for next week when more improvements have been made.

The King of Fighters XIV is immediately available for the PlayStation 4.
