Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

This really felt like a game that should have had co-op. It just feels like a somewhat lesser version of Fable to me, for some reason. The story didn't really grab me.

Feels like a "better" version of Fable to me, lol.

I dunno, the world in Fable felt more tangible. This game just seems to have shades of many different RPG's but doesn't seem to really excel at any one feature. The alchemy, blacksmithing and stealth stuff is straight out of an elder scrolls game, the world and the combat feels totally fable...

Also, for some reason it feels like Kameo Elements of Power to me :/ Terrible voice acting, character customisation options etc.

Like Fable though, it's the kinda game I probably could have gotten into with a friend. At least with co-op, it'd be fun to kinda compete for kills, hunt achievements and collectibles, compare different characters etc.

I'll probably get it when I have some disposable income, just to try it out, but I think it's being marketed in a cooler way than the game actually IS.

This is waay better than Fable ever could be. I rented this and have been playing it for a while, its very fun. I actually agree with a lot of they are saying on that quick look. The main story is very good and the combat is good but the side missions are meh basically like any side mission in any game. I was going to buy it but MLB 2k12 comes out in the beginning of March and The Witcher 2 comes out in the beginning of April so I don't have time for this game.

Well I enjoyed the side quests in Fable, so that's one thing it has over Kingdom.

I don't HATE Fable.. but I also only believe that there was one good Fable game... The first one.

IGN gave this a 9.0.

I don't care what IGN said... I'm so entirely over their inconsistencies.

I would recommend looking at metacritic. People seem pretty divided over this game. I think I'm going to have to play a few hours of this to make my mind up, rather than just go by the demo.

Yeah, the Kotaku review raises one of the main things that bugged me, the uninspired character design and voice acting. The worlds look so nice that it's a shame to have something like that take you out of the immersion

I agree.

I only posted that because I knew they were going to score it high because a few weeks ago they were already saying it was better than Skyrim.

That's why I freaking hate IGN. They were on the frontlines of Games Media overhyping Skyrim, then when Game of the Year came around, Skyrim was suddenly too mainstream for them. They even did a 'hilarious' GOTY video where they showed clips of Skyrim as the winning game then quickly replaced it with Portal 2. They're so damn selective with their crappy ****e.

I'll take a review written by real journalists any day, if I wanted the opinions of fickle gamers I'd just ask my friends.... or people on these forums :P

Not at all, actually.

29 positive, 3 mixed, 0 negative.

User reviews aren't much different
41 positive, 4 mixed, 2 negative

I picked my copy up this afternoon but I got it for PC and my laptop is **** so I'll have to wait until I'm back home Friday to install it. I have a feeling this will be kind of like Darksiders. That was being compared to recently released and upcoming games like Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, and God of War III plus all the Zelda comparisons and was mostly overlooked because of that. Then later it was getting better reception when people gave it a chance.

IGN has completely diffrent reviewers and completely diffrent review teams for each specific platform.
Also Skyrim doesn't deserve any GOTY, it's a badly designed game and Portal 2 is a far better designed one. Shogun 2 got shafted because it wasn't a mainstream console game hyped to high hell, IGN and every dude-bro websites (that practically everyone here probably visits) is guilty of this. Sinners, the lot of them.

On topic, I will pick this up on a steam sale, from the start it looked so-so.

I wanted to be really into this game, but after seeing a fair amount of footage and playing the demo, it just seems kind of dull.

Giant Bomb review (4/5)

There are plenty of really great things to see and do in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and that stuff--the main quest line, the faction quests, and the interesting combat--makes the game fairly easy to recommend. But it's hard not to be at least a little disappointed when you start seeing the various spots where the game doesn't live up to the high bar set by its best content. If you finish it fast enough to prevent those doldrums from setting in, you'll have a much better time than the person who digs through every nook and cranny to finish every single side quest.

Lol well that number of positive reviews has practically doubled since I checked it. There was a large discrepancy between the positive and the mixed ones when I checked. It was 90's and then 70's. Obviously it's different now though.

I remember looking back at some older videos of Kingdoms of Amalur and hearing the devs say could only pick one type of class. Warrior type, assassin type, and magician. But when I played the demo, it seemed I could be all 3. Did they chance that game play option, or am I just remembering wrong?

I believe you can play as a jack of all trades and make that your destiny, but you won't utilise the full extent of each class types unless you specialise in one or just two. There are a few combinations.

Thanks. Guess I'll...go down a warrior magician path then.:woot:

I think the way they do it they kind of encourage you to try a bit of everything before you really have to start worrying about specialising.

I really like how they handled it. The option to respec is great so you're free to try different types on a single play through. And the Destiny cards you unlock allow your character to still be viable at any point in the game.

I don't see the Fable combat comparison at all. Unless you used a sport analogy, and said Fable's combat is Kwame Brown, and Amalur's combat is Tim Duncan... then I'd agree with you. Will probably pick this game up before Skyrim, because the "real" version of Skyrim won't come out until half a year after the last DLC is available for everyone.

The simple one button attacks as well as the way they integrate ranged and melee is totally fable, not to mention the character models.

I'm kinda digging this game so far. I'm only a little way into the story and rocking fae blades, chakras and the N7 themed armour. So sick of these damn forests though and I think it still definitely could have had a Fable 3 style co-op.
