Kirk Alyn. He is the perfect Golden Age Superman. He's all-action, always running around, leaping into the sky, throwing things...he's commanding and confident, upstanding and determined. It's absolutely a 2D performance, but to play a 2D character (the Golden Age comics were not sophisticated) he's perfect.
I'd also argue he's the best Clark Kent ever. Really. For a star, he looks EXACTLY like a Schuster drawing. Second, he plays Clark as quiet and unassuming, but never as a slapstick loser ala Reeve and Routh.
He's great fun to watch. Some of his antics would be considered 'campy' now by those who have no idea what the word means (over-theatrical would be a better term), but it's all part of 1940's serial acting. If you haven't seen either of Kirk Alyn's serials, I suggest you seek them out, they are hugely entertaining and a perfect recreation of the comics of the time.
