Well, after I heard people talking about this incident at the comic book store today, I couldn't resist watching the actual video (I hadn't yet at the time because I tend not to like intense, loud, awkward, argumentative situations, so I shied away from watching it). Anyway, I just finished it and I must say that what Richards did was wrong and extremely overboard (and I mean extremely), but this doesn't let the jackass he was yelling at off the hook, either. Put it this way: before Richards started screaming, "He's a ******! He's a ******! He's a ******," not only was he within the boundaries of decency and legitimacy, but he also had a point! The jerk was being obnoxious (let alone rude and inconsiderate to the audience members around him—no wonder they laughed, clapped, and cheered after Richards called him out on it before he stooped as low as he did), and to make matters even worse, he retorted with his own racial slur! And I know that some people will disagree with me on this issue, but, in my opinion, racism toward/racial slurs against black people are just as bad as racism toward/racial slurs against white people. Well, this heckler apparently disagrees, and in calling Richards what he called him while at the same time not being as hassled as Richards is for the same thing, he's essentially benefiting from and taking advantage of the fact that his ancestors were enslaved by the ancestors of Richards, which is just sickening.
My point? They're both jackasses. But, listen, we all say things we don't mean when we're angry (yes, we all do—don't deny it), and to claim that Richards is racist simply because of this is just absurd. Period. Nothing else to discuss. Close thread.
